I ventured into the Big Apple with two of my road buddies to see a very short Patty set. The band was tight and she was awesome...HOWEVER, a different set list may have been in order if our girl was looking for new fans (IMHO). She performed the following songs, not necessarily in this order: Carry Me Perfect White Girls Blue Skies Top of the World Truth #2 Flaming Red Mary Perhaps she could have done alittle Poor Man's House or Sweet Lorraine or Good Bye or You Are Not Alone or perhaps I just wanted more Patty. I ain't sayin nothin,' I'm just sayin.' She joined the Chicks for Let Him Fly which was their best tune last night. They put on a great show with lots of energy and did just about every song on their two CDs, and a Sheryl Crow tune (and did it well I might add). Sadly, Patty said her new CD will probably be out in...BRACE YOURSELVES...January!!! I paid $25.00 for a Patty T-shirt and a free promo CD. If anyone knows anything about the artwork on the back (Chinese?), let me know. Now, I know $ 25.00 was a lot for the very plain white T-shirt with PATTY GRIFFIN in red lettering and a small dog and Chinese something on the back, but I REALLY wanted it, and besides, it will look really cool when it has aged a bit, and besides, I REALLY wanted my promo! This brings me to my next story: So I sits down in my seat with my T-shirt that I borrowed the $$$ for, and I sees a chick in the row in front of me with one in her hand. I says "so, how much do you want for that?" She says "You can have it." ME: "THANKS." Turning to my road buddies "Hey, do either of you want this?" Now, both are CHISELERS, but at that very moment, I felt alittle like Solomon-ready to divide the CD down the middle, and alittle like G-d, with so much power over mere mortal man. One hand shot out and took the CD (he was much more deserving, but the other was my brother). Anyway, I decided that it was so easy to get the first free CD, that I purused the crowd 10 minutes before showtime and obtained another one in a few shameless minutes. My point? If you plan to see Patty, the Chicks fans will part with the promo for little or nothing. Of course, it was before Patty went on. There's a tip from your aunt Pat. I know it is a little long and I wasn't going to comment on Holly Cole but...what the h*ll. Holly was a member of "The Holly Cole Trio" which is kind of jazzy and slow. Her solo "Dark Dear Heart" is most excellent! It has Onion Girl and Make it Go Away (which was also featured in an episode of Homocide, Life on the Streets). She toured with Lilith last year but I think it was only on the West Coast. Talk amounts yourselves... I've seen him several times before, but this was one of his best shows. In fact, it was one of his longest shows coming in at about 2 & 1/2 hours with 3 encores. He played just about all the new songs from "Transcendental Blues" plus the usual Earle classics like "Someday", "Copperhead Road" and "I Ain't Ever Satisfied." But the encores were the highlight of the night which included Nirvana's "Breed", Springsteen's "State Trooper" and the Beatles' "No Reply". He also did his new cover of the Chamber Bros.' "Time Has Come Today" and man did he let loose on that one! All in all, it was another incredible performance by SE. And Marah was great in the opening slot. Man, these guys can really jam! It's cool to see an old fashioned garage band out there kickin' ass and takin' names, especially one coming from my hometown of Philadelphia. (Okay, so I'm biased.) Anyway, check 'em out when they come to your town. See ya! I was there too :) Thanx for the name to the second song...i taped the whole concert, but i don't think she said anywhere the name of that song, and this was my first time seeing patty live, so i'm not so familiar w/ the songs not on the cds. Wish i knew about the cd promos...i only peeked at the shirts over ppl's heads, and didn't even know they were giving the promos out. Oh well, at least i have my tape and i'm working on getting them to record to mp3's as well as they sound on the tape. And I had to keep playing that part over about the new cd to make sure i got the date right...can't believe we have to wait till Jan. It's such a long time away. Oh, another thing...i'm still wondering...those arm movements patty kept doing. Does she always do that or was she attempting to fly since it was a the Fly Tour? - -XC - ------- > I ventured into the Big Apple with two of my road buddies to see a very short > Patty set.
