My recollection is that it was the earliest live-shows-with-band that really raised a lot of hackles around here. To my everlasting regret (I think) I found out about Patty's website and this group only days after she played one of the first shows on that tour, at the Rhodeside (a little hole in the wall cafe less than a mile from where I live). But the overwhelming opinion on the list was that the band was WAY too loud and badly mixed, overwhelming her vocals. I didn't get to see her until the Bayou show in DC that winter... good show, still loud, mix was much improved, hated the band that opened. Opinion about the merits of Patty's band's and whether it represented a step forward for Patty were much more mixed, but nearly everybody (the way I remember it) was literally pained at the volume and the muddy sound of those early shows. Anybody remember things differently? Steve As far as FR, I seem to recall almost everyone being pleased and exhilarated... surprised, maybe but not alienated. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 09:30:51 EDT From: LMYERS2HOU@aol.com Subject: MM: Re: mad-mission-digest V4 #201--drummer on FR In a message dated 7/9/00 12:46:12 AM Central Daylight Time, owner-mad-mission-digest@smoe.org writes: << , I listened to LWG a couple of times and then popped in FR on my way home. Now as you may rememnber i've only been tuned into Patty for about a month now and the Kickin drum intro on FR just made my jaw drop. >> My jaw dropped too the first time I heard those drums. It is Kenny Aronoff who in my opinion is the greatest drummer ever. He was with Mellencamp for many years and is now the drummer for Melissa Etheridge who, in my opinion, is the greatest singer-songwriter ever. I think Patty is wonderful too, but to try to compare them would be like comparing apples to oranges. I was listening to LWG, and in particular "Not Alone." I've always liked this song. What I get out of the song is that there is a couple engaged to be married and one of them accidentally gets shots. What I have trouble with is that I keep going back and forth whether it's the guy or girl getting shot. Does the song specify? I admit I've never been that good at interpreting lyrics. Do any of you know who is shot in the song? Or do any of you take a completely different approach to this song? I'm curious as to what people think. Thanks a ton, Steve V. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 17:43:29 -0400 From: Anne Corrigan Subject: MM: Not Alone I believe the person who was shot was the woman, I don't know whether they were engaged or newly married or what...but it was definitly the woman who was killed, and she is looking down on her husband or lover, from heaven, like a ghost and saying "You're not alone, I am still with you in spirit". A great song.... Anne ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 21:29:49 EDT From: HILARYL123@aol.com Subject: MM: off topic : extra natalie merchant tix ! Hey there MM'ers I was wondering if any of you fellow musicians know the chords to I Write the Book... I'm generally quite terrible when it comes to picking out a song by ear...I thought Patty had capo on third and used some of her usual chords like G, C7, D and so on...but for the life of me, I am unable to get it straight in the order she plays it... Thanks in advance... Kat and Kegan ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V4 #202 *********************************
