It's surprising to me because I think of Patty's music as so open to other interpretations, and yet the Dixie Chicks and McBride don't show themselves in their covers. Do any of you musicians who sometimes play Patty songs find yourselves playing *her* version, or your own? There are some songwriters whose music is so personal people must tiptoe carefully through a cover (Tori?) but though I prefer Patty's versions (that voice!), many of her songs seem to exist as perfect self-contained entities that others should be able to breathe to life, rather than just reinact Patty's take on them. karen. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 09:02:11 -0400 (EDT) From: "C. I don't know if it's b/c they know I used to listen to her alot, of if they are hearing a resemblance... I just have no clue how you could hear Patty singing and think it was ANYBODY ELSE! Actually, I'm guilty of this. Back when I wasn't a HUGE Patty fan yet, I had no idea about Flaming Red and it's new single, "One Big Love." I remember being at a coffee shop and that song came on. I had only heard it once before and thought it sounded like Sheryl Crow, but something about it was different from Ms. Crow's style. I mentioned this to my friend and he said that it did sound like Crow, but that the difference was that this singer was actually singing in key (he wasn't a big Sheryl Crow fan). I'm not knocking Sheryl; this is just how the conversation went. I think it was weeks until they finally mentioned on the radio that the singer of that catchy new tune was none other than Ms. Patty Griffin. :-) -Cristina - ----------------------------------------------- FREE! I was blind to Patty until about two weeks ago. I read where Emily of the Chicks said how great Patty was and Blah blah blah.... so I went out and bought both her CD's in two days. The Chicks should be careful who they recommend as both of Patties CDs put the Chicks to shame. I still love the Chicks CDs but Patty definitely knows how to sing write and play from the heart more than any other Artist that I can think of. I also love Sheryl Crow, Maria Mckee, Dixie Chicks, and some others that I wouldn't want you laugh at. It's sad that Patty could have escaped me for four years now but also cool that I got to experience both discs/styles at once (with another one in the fall)? So needless to say I've been married to my CD player for a couple weeks now. And we all know how good that feels. I write songs as well and have a web page on mp3.com where you can check out a couple of my acoustic demos. I was getting ready to start working on a CD but now after hearing Patty's discs I'm not sure how I want to produce it, If you check out the page/tunes let me know what you think the Addy is http://www.mp3.com/markallendamron Thanks for listen, now back to our regularly scheduled programming......... mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 11:46:03 EDT From: JAMac99@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: NPC: Singer Songwriter Weekend WXPN 88.5 Philly Public supported radio The cost for the Singer Songwriter weekend at Penn's Landing in Philly is actually $5 per day for XPN members and $10 per day for members. I believe the meet and greet is for XPN members only. Tickets available at the event. Regardless, there will be great music on both days. I sent this e-mail out last week, but I'm not sure if it worked cause I was on somebody elses computer. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew what kind of guitar(s) Patty plays. I realized that I have no idea, but I MUST know!! I am going to unsubscribe from the list, but seeing Mike's email, I wanted to add a quick explanation... I've been a list member from way back (right near the beginning, I believe) although I switched to the digest version when I started to lurk more then post.... Mostly I'm unsubscribing because I'm going to go work for semester at sea, and I can't face the kind of email that this list would generate while I'm gone for five months.... But also - folks can't seem to be kind on this list - people insist on replying to messages and re-posting the WHOLE message over and over, and the NPC has been getting more and more offensive - the kind of stuff that doesn't need to be posted to the whole group. Kind list members post to the list what needs to be read by the whole list, and keep comments directed to one person directed to one person. Those of you who are here to support Patty and further her music, rock on. But it doesn't seem to me that this list is what it used to be - about Patty. Now people are making it about themselves. I'll see you at the shows... LG ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 16:47:55 EDT From: NikosSong@aol.com Subject: MM: Hmmm... Well, I have to say, I have been on this list for about...I don't know...five, six months, maybe? For being on a list for that period of a time, I'd have to say this is only about my 3rd post. Anyway, my point is...so what if everyone doesn't see eye to eye? In my opinion, it is worth staying on the list to get the good posts, as infrequent as they may be. So you have to sift through a few to get to those good ones? So what? That's two minutes of my life I don't mind wasting. I think as long as you look at it from a positive perspective, and enjoy what you do have, instead of burying under all of the bad stuff, you will have an enjoyable time on this list! Thanks for listening to my crazy talk :) Jenni ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 17:45:19 -0400 From: Jami Rodriguez Subject: MM: MM. virgin post Well, i have been watching the list for some time now and haven't yet posted. But I just wanted to second the motion for everyone in the Philly area to attend the wxpn sinnger song writer fest. That is where I in fact discoverd the amazing world of Patty, and music hasn't been the same since. This years line up looks good, and I'm hoping to attend at least Sunday's concert. jami ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 18:36:48 -0400 From: "Jennifer Lynn Caputo" Subject: MM: new mp3s Hey all, Added 5 new mp3s and might add one more before the night's up. At the request of Dana (and with the help of Peter) I finally got a copy of Patty singing "Shells". Thank you dana for recommending this one! it's amazing!!! Anyway...I uploaded Shells, Regarding Mary (a live version!), Stolen Car, Night (one that didn't make the new album but is sooo fabulous!) and Nobody's Crying (my personal favorite). If I have time tonight I will also upload Breaking Up Somebody's Home. Please Read..... Hey all :) I just wanted to update all of you on our progress with Rarities 2..... This project has expanded quite a bit and isn't exactly a Rarities 2 anymore but rather a Patty Griffin compilation. We're calling it "Love From My Lips" and it will include all (that we could find) unreleased Patty tunes. This will also include the tunes from the first version of Rarities but they have been cleaned, digitized, remastered, and all that other stuff. The first two cds (yes, TWO cds) will include Patty originals. The third cd will include Patty covers and duets. There's also talk of a fourth if it doesn't all fit. We're hoping it fits. :) Here's the help us part: We are looking for someone with actual photographs, (not scans) of Patty photos that we can use for the cover art. We are also looking for any background information that any of you may know about Patty's songs. For example, the song "Shells" was written about Bosnian children. These are the tunes we still need info on: We Are Water When Something's Broken I Wonder Connie and Val Buck Naked Heart The Long Ride Home Calling Me Home Twisted Road Vertigo Nobody's Crying With that all said, here is a tentative tracklist for the first two cds. They aren't even close to being done yet so please don't e-mail me asking for them. 'Arkansas Traveler' and 'Kind Hearted Woman'. I must say I enjoyed the latter one much better. But, I was impressed by both. I also bought the Richard Shindell cd, 'Somewhere Near Patterson' and Sinead O'Conner's new cd. I found both to be very enjoyable. Now..on to Patty. I have never thought of Patty as sounding like Sheryl Crow..but, my mother has made a statement about the similarities. Also, this Rarities cd? How will people be able to get a hold of this cd? I live in Cincinnati, and... I really need my Patty fix. She never tours here, the cds (although, I never grow tired of them) are not working like they once did. I know she has the new cd out.. and, I go to the MP3 page..but.... that rarities cd sounds wonderful. ?
