["Paul Russell" Subject: Re: MM: Weighing in late on the Evil Gary Gala As for all this angst on the list recently, the funny thing is that when I went to the Patty show in SF last week, I almost started a barroom brawl over a couple of ignorant twats standing behind me who chose to make fun of my (decidedly incongruous to the rest of the crowd) hair and clothes out loud. Boy, were they bitchy. A room full of people in Gap, and they were worried about me? Anyway...I stood there, taking breaths and listening to them, and wondering what to do. I began to plot how to best spin around and shove a beer glass up this girls' nose, even risking getting kicked out of the show...but instead, I focused on distancing myself from the energy in the room, and thought about Patty. When she hit the stage, and those first few chords began, I couldn't have been farther away from the petty f*ckers behind me. I went to heaven, while they stood there putting energy into being hateful toward me because I'm different. My point? Some people live in small, hot, angry little worlds. It's better to keep your energy for that which is positive than to cast yourself after someone who's already made up their mind to be a jerk at all times. Furthermore - I'm a shameless self-promoter. You be too, whoever you are. Without shameless self promotion, no musician would ever get anywhere. Ever. Ever. You can't possibly go wrong in emphatically supporting your dreams. I see nothing wrong" to "why not have him deliver a pair of glasses to OJ's house?" ...yikes!!!! (I certainly now know WHO'S bad side not to get on) I plan to send a post to this list outlying many of the "behind the scenes" reasons this behavior has been a disruption and must stop. Some of you already see some of these reasons (based on some of the replies I have received) many of you have not though, especially those that see nothing wrong. It's simply not as easy as "they should delete the emails they don't like", there's a LOT more to it than that. If I have the time, I will post tonight, if not, it will have to wait until at least Wednesday, as I will be out of town tomorrow until 1:00am or later. One thing I will say now is, "Evil" Gary has been warned, but will not be banned from the list. If he keeps it up, I will ask him to leave. (In all my years of running the 3,000 subscriber Jewel mailing lists, I have only banned ONE person, and he did a heck of a lot worse stuff than Gary ever would think of, so it's got to be pretty serious and persistent to be asked to leave) Again, I want all of you to fully understand why this kind of on-list behavior, both the name calling and quantity of his posts, cannot be acceptable on this list, and I will post many of those "behind the scenes" reasons within a couple of days. Mike P.S. Again, those of you will get multiple copies of this post due to the method I used to send it. (only some PC) Ok.. so I have nothing worthwhile to promote for myself, but I do have an opinion on this... As long as you put NPC, or at least have some pertinent Patty info within your email to the mailing list.. I welcome anyone to tell me about their music. As a member of this list, I'm interested in good music, Patty's or otherwise. I spend many hours listening to great music that is made by the members of this list, and is one heck of a lot better than anything I would have been listening to if not for someone promoting their music. Patty's music draws wonderful and passionate musicians and fans of great music. I must agree with Andie in saying that if you're not willing to promote yourself, who will? (me excluded) You'll never make it if you don't have the confidence to try to sell your own product. That being said.. many many thanks (in no particular order) to Nancy Micciulla, Darcie Miner, Jessica Weiser, Sharyn Murray, and Patty Blee for blessing me with their wonderful music and their beautiful voices. Thanks should also go out to those of you (Kristen- Mary Arden Collins) who have turned me on to other great music that I would have never known if not for your recommendations! Seriously.. if you have not checked any of these people out, do yourself a favor and get their demos/CD's. :-) Sincerely, Dave (the shameless promoter for all the wonderfully talented girls of the MM list) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 20:55:30 -0400 From: "Jennifer Lynn Caputo" Subject: MM: a rude email Hi everyone, I received this email a few days ago. Granted, I live no where NEAR the PA area, and miss out on a bunch of great music from the artists on this list, but I see nothing wrong with a little self-promotion. What the heck is so wrong with saying, "hey guys, I'm playing at such-in-such club tonight. Come check it out"? Nancy, I can't imagine that you have offended anyone on this list other than that one dissenting voice (from the posts I've read, it is still just ONE dissenting voice). Please, please, please don't get the impression that we don't want to hear when and where you are playing. Even if I can't make it out there, I love knowing that the artists on this list are making a contribution and are getting heard. As for the other drama/crap that's plagued this list in the past 72 hours...well, perhaps I shouldn't antagonize the situation. Let's just say that age certainly does not equal wisdom--or maturity for that matter. That said, I'll certainly miss you guys and gals while I'm in France for the ENTIRE month of July. Since sooo many more people entered then I had originally expected not everyone that wanted a poster is going to get one...I'm gonna have to draw names for this one too.... These people have received tons of nominees and will be receiving a cd and poster for sure: Dave (UMCaner) - he had the most votes - the rest are in random order Dana Mitowski (I'm sorry if I murdered your last name!) Don Henn (What is up with all the D's???) Rachel Martin now I have a tie.... there are like 3 more people that are all tied for getting the last preselected cd. It's really hard to choose so I am gonna wait another day to see if i get any more entries with votes for those people... I definately think that these 3 people are extremely deserving of the cds so if I end up having to choose I will be picking one of their three names from a hat. As for the other 5 cds - I need to wait a few more days and will then pick from a hat. I will also be uploading a few more mp3s tonight or tomorrow night. They will probably be the last few of the summer because of my move sans the computer. Jen P.S. i would also like to apologize for my last post re: the email that I received...I should've dealt with it on my own and didn't need to get you all involved. http://63.65.13.167/pattygriffin/mp3s/pmp3.htm The Patty Griffin mp3 of the week site http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~jcaputo/Patty.html Patty Griffin Concert Photo Archive ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 19:39:46 PDT From: "Paul Russell" Subject: MM: NPC as shameless as they come! Self promos are a great way to help. Jennifer, I can't imagine anybody giving you an email "speaking for all of us." Didn't we have that ranting thread already where it was decided that no one speaks for everyone on this list?...to write that would be pretty conceded. The content was pretty lame too, considering all you're doing for us with the contests and the M3's...but I don't wanna go there. It's not like MY emails are so chock full of Patty Griffin that they burst when you open it. Oh, speaking of.... ********paul now actually has PG content, I wonder what it is?******** Hey, I'm serious about that Griffin/Chicks concert thing. Anybody in the Jacksonville Florida area? I want to get those Dixie Chicks tix (say THAT ten times fast). Let me know! It's already sold out in Biloxi, and that's like a month away. If I my first Patty Griffin experience gets phuct up, some heads are gonna roll. **********paul goes insane because he's a dickhead*********** Okay, I've got some money....do I put air conditioning in my car (because it's sweltering hot in FL), or do I just buy a lot of alcohol and get naked (because it's sweltering hot in FL)? Believe it or not, that's a hard decision...one worth contemplating. You know what? I miss Lee from Hotlanta. She always had a good Jackson Browne story to fit in somewhere and blend it with Patty Griffin. Mr. Browne digs Patty, too and promotes her whenever he can. And one more thing.....OJ didn't do it. I'd feel safe around him. I'll go visit him and help him chop tomatoes or something. gotta run. I don't think I'll drink tonight, but look out tomorrow baybee!
