[Laura Taylor ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 21:17:40 -0400 From: "Jennifer Lynn Caputo" Subject: MM: Contest: Patty sampler from new album & posters Well everyone I have been keeping quiet about some very exciting stuff for way too long..basically trying to figure out how to post this carefully. A&M/Interscope just serviced a 5 track CD sampler featuring: Let Him Fly (from LWG) Tony (from Flaming Red) Silver Bell (title cut from upcoming release) Standing ("brand spanking new"..also on Silver Bell) Mary (live at The Mint in L.A.) Some of you may have seen these on eBay already. These are great little cds - all songs are full length and when you all hear Standing you will cry your little eyes out! It reminds me of a southern gospel song. Ok - well on our list is a guy who works for Island/Def Jams and is very generous. He has about 10 of these cds and he wants them to go to you guys. He's paying for postage and everything - I just need to supply him with some addresses. But wait! He also has 30-40 posters left over from the old flaming red promo days... and these posters aren't the little 12 X 16 posters we all saw in the record stores - these are about 24 X 28 of Patty in a little dress all made up with her hair blown back curled up on the floor - a very rare shot! So here is the deal: Anyone who wins a cd will also get a poster but that leaves about 30 posters to still be distributed. I don't know how many of you are out there or how many are interested but I'm guessing that the majority of you that want a poster will get one. As for the cds - Anyone interested send me an email with the following information: (if you enter for a cd you will automatically be entered for a poster) Name Address E-mail address A vote of someone you think deserves the cd (other than yourself) I'm doing this as fair as I can - I'm gonna write names on paper and pull a few out of a hat. I don't have time to be any more creative right now - sorry... 5 people will also be preselected to get these cds. The criteria: We will be reviewing an archive of posts from the past year - those who have made the most valuable posts or contributions or have seemed particularly nice or helpful will be chosen. And so it doesn't seem like I am picking favorites I have asked that everyone interested also votes a list member who they think should be pre-selected for a cd. I ask that I get all votes/addresses by Wednesday, June 21st so that I can get this all done before I move for the summer. I hope you are all as excited as I am about this - believe me, you do not want to miss out on this cd (or poster)! It really sounds like the show in SF was awesome! If only I could just pack up and go I would have been there in a heartbeat! Dana, to answer your question about Patty not being able to play that song anymore.. I've asked her before about playing the older material (We Are Water in particular). She said something to the effect of not feeling that song anymore, or she was in a different place in life when she wrote that song.. or something to that effect. I'm sure there are songs like Sweet Lorraine and Poor Man's House (for instance, not saying these in particular) that she doesn't feel as strongly about as she once did, but she still plays either out of the fans "Need" to hear those songs or whatever. So much of the power in her live performances is fueled by the passion and emotion in which she ALL of her songs. If she's not feeling those songs anymore, they won't be the same. That is my guess as to what she's getting at by "I can't play that song anymore". Denise, to answer your question about Boston.. Please keep in mind that this is my interpretation from hearing the song and listening to Patty explain it.., and in no way do her thoughts/opinions portray MY feelings about the city you live in..:-) The song is about her life while she lived in Boston, and pretty much how miserable she was there. How everyone there wouldn't give anyone in her family a job for many different reasons. If anyone has a copy of the Lebanon, NH show, she describes it there pretty clearly. I can't recall the entire story, but it's a song that Patty has said.. "is dissing Boston". She has said that the people there always seem tired and stressed out, and mean.. but they're really NOT mean, they just seem that way at first. Anyway, the solo version of the song has this really upbeat, kinda fast guitar part to it. It sounds like a happy song if you're not listening to the lyrics. :-) I've haven't yet heard her play it with the band, so I don't know what it will sound like on the new CD. If you go to Patty's yahoo.com club and look for the link to Rachel's (wonderful) Patty Griffin's lyric archive page, I believe the lyrics to the song are there. I hope that helps! I'm new to the MM list, and pretty new to Patty's music. i've loved artists before, but Patty beats them all out. I got "flaming red" off ebay (finally!) and the day i got it I got a speeding ticket, the cd is so good. Her music includes everything i love about music and more and she totally gives herself over to the music when she sings. i can't put into words how much i like her music.. i'm a musician as well (aren't we all?). i play guitar and sing either by myself or with a friend. every other weekend or so we sing on the streets of Paducah, KY, for "downtown after dinner." and two weeks ago we sang in a folk festival here where i live. in august i'm moving to nashville to go to belmont and i'm _more_ than excited. (did i read something earlier about a MM cd, w/ original songs??) anyway, i have a question. i've found just a little bit about the new cd, and i;m curious if anybody knows which songs are gonna be on it, whether she's said it in concert or whether it's been published. my fave song is "i write the book." will that be on the new cd? also, i'm gonna see her open for the dixie chicks in louisville, if she's the opener, and i am SO excited. that's about it. i like this list cause it's not so high-traffic as FTE was (sarah mclachlan's list) and because it's about a much better artist! later! laura t. lwtaylor@ziggycom.net ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V4 #172 *********************************
