Aimee Mann first rose to stardom as the vocalist for 'til Tuesday ("Voices Carry"). She has a brand new album out called Bachelor #2. But, so far, my favorite is still I'm With Stupid. I've only heard one of their albums, and it didn't impress me much, I have to admit. They had massive label problems and broke up, so she went solo and recorded "Whatever" on Imago (a sort of indie branch of BMG) , which is a stunning album and highly recommended. She then had further label problems, when Imago collapsed or whatever, and found herself without a contract. She eventually ended up on Geffen, for whom she recorded "I'm With Stupid". This has a lot of amazing people guesting on it -- Juliana Hatfield, Difford & Tillbrook (from Squeeze) and Michael Penn (more on him later) -- but I think it's kind of a weak follow-up. She then had FURTHER label hassles when they rejected the songs that she wrote for the follow-up, so she left Geffen, produced and released the album itself called Bachelor No. 2, , and it can be gotten either from her website, the excellent http://aimeemann.com/ or from amazon.com She is now married to Michael Penn, a similarly sharp songwriter, a match made in heaven. They are currently touring their Acoustic Vaudeville show together, and I've just found out that they're coming to ENGLAND to play the Shepherd's Bush Empire on the 13th of July. Excellent venue, excellent show in the offing. I was tempted to see Magnolia, apparantly inspired by her songs, but two things put me off: its length, and the fact that the same director did "Boogie Nights", which I rate as one of the most appallingly overrated and godawful films I've ever seen. So, I missed it. But I ain't missing Acoustic Vaudeville. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 09:08:26 EDT From: "You Oughta Know" Subject: MM: Re:NPC-Aimee Mann Hi all. First I want to thank you for some the very intersting info that has been shared lately. I just wanted to tell you all, especially the MMers from the Philly area, Aimee Mann and Michael Penn will be at the Keswick Theater June 23 at 8pm. Tickets are $25 and the phone number to order is: 215-572-7650. Thought I would pass the info on. So, I missed it. "Magnolia" is marginally less overrated and godawful than "Boogie Nights," but does have some truly wretched moments, most notably the montage of all the characters in the movie moonily lip-synching an Aimee Mann tune (the name of which escapes me) as if in realtime in the story. I'd have felt sorry for poor Jason Robards if I hadn't been laughing my ass off at the time. But the orchestral score is really good, and I liked the swooping cinematography up to a point, and the downpour of frogs is, well, unlike absolutely anything else. Anything. Absolutely. Mann's music has never reached out and grabbed me, but "Magnolia" wasn't a context that was going to make a convert of me. She's just a kid (by my standards--I'm 47, to add to yet another thread which I passed on), a Virginia native and student at Brown University (ethnomusicology). She's about 5-foot-nothing, looks a bit like a pixie, and comes out on stage with this big ol' guitar... and SWINGS, and ROCKS, and is more fun than a barrel of ADD Monkeys. What I didn't realize, until I got her CD, is what a fine songwriter she is. Her new album is "Distillation" and I can't get it out of my discman, since I received it from Ladyslipper the other day. Do yourself a favor, check her out: http://www.erinmckeown.com/ Also consider the more obliquely poetic Rose Polenzani. I discovered Erin seeing her open a couple of times for Rose. Rose Polenzani is truly wonderful, but doesn't yet, in my opinion, have recorded material to rival Erin's "Distillation." But what a riveting performer she is! http://www.rosepolenzani.com/ Steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 13:10:22 EDT From: Idlewylde@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: traders who suck (NPC) Hey Mad Mishers...My name is Stephanie, and I'm actively involved in trading cdr's. I just wanted to see if anyone out there is having problems similar to mine. Since March three fellow MMers have ripped me off. Now, there are some GREAT people on this list that I've traded with and done b and p deals for. I've probably burned at least 30 copies of Rarities One for people, and I'm glad to do it, because everyone should have it. :) But, I'm kind of disheartened because out of the years worth of trading I've done, I've been ripped off 4 times, and 3 times have been by people on this list. I always picked them up, and took a look. Never picked them up, and took them home. I first heard a song of her's from the 'Cruel Intentions' (horrible movie) soundtrack. Then, when I saw 'Magnolia' I fell in love. 'Magnolia', by the way... is a fantastic movie. At times very real, at times almost a fantasy. A soap opera with good actors and great music. Any movie with more than 5 central characters (ie, Short Cuts) is a winner on my list. Aimee Mann has some wonderful songs on the 'Magnolia' Soundtrack. Four of which appear on her newest album, 'Bachelor No. 2, or the last remains of the dodo'. I have heard her two prior cds, and her newest. I find 'Bachelor No. 2' to be, by far, her greatest cd. I was unable to remove the cd from my cd player, except for when I placed it in the car to have a listen. At times she sounds like Liz Phair, at times she reminds me of another singer (who I can not think of now), and at times she is all on her own. She is a great singer/songwriter who was underappreciated for far too long. I had 10 people respond to the original email, so if there are other musicians out there please contributetoo! This will be awesome. Maybe if we have enough people and everyone agrees we can put all the tracks on MP3.com, put out a DAM album (through mp3.com) and donate the proceeds to a charity or something?!? Please email me if you want to send something or w/ questions of if you want to help me out! :) Thanks!!
