I'm Amanda, and I've been lurking for a few weeks now, until I just thought what the heck, why not post, they seem like nice enough folks. *looks around warily* You are nice folks, right? My personal Patty history: The first Patty Griffin song I heard was the World Cafe version of 'Every Little Bit' on WXPN here in the Philadelphia area. (Thank the gods for WXPN, I've discovered nearly all my favorite artists through them.) I then got the 'Live at the World Cafe Vol. 5' CD in 1997 just for that track. (Well, okay, that and Kim Richey's 'I Know.') Then I picked up _Living With Ghosts._ I was so impressed by Patty's lyrics, and the raw emotive power of her voice. I didn't get around to picking up _Flaming Red_ until a few months after it came out, but the first time I put it into the stereo I was totally blown away. It *rocked*! Every song is special in its own way. There just really aren't the words to describe the joy I get from listening to this album. It quickly became my favorite, and is still in heavy rotation. And I appreciate LWG a lot more now, too. I read some things about how FR was a 'departure' or a 'change in style' for Patty from LWG, but the differences didn't faze me at all. It seemed perfectly natural. Whatever style it is, that Patty Griffin essence is still there. It was sort of like when I first heard Maria McKee's _Life Is Sweet_, which also required something of a shift in perspective from her earlier work, but I accepted it readily because the intensity and the integrity of the artist remained. I've gotta say, though, while I've got an intellectual appreciation for Ms. McKee's fantastic work, Patty's music touches me on a much deeper level as well. It really moves my soul. :) Anyway, I saw Patty live last August in Westmont, NJ, and it was one of the best nights of my life. (Granted I have a pretty boring life, but still, it was Patty!) The band rocked, Patty rocked, it was amazing. I was so impressed with how she managed to sustain her energy level and the strength of her voice throughout the show. I get a happy just thinking about it. Random questions, comments, stuff: - -Does anyone know if Patty will be at the Pittsburgh date with the Dixe Chicks in October? It's depressing that one can live in a major metropolitan area (Chicago) and yet still have very little in the way of radio diversity. Hey Y'all! After living in Austin for less than two months, I ran into none other than Ms. Patty G during a concert at a local pub!! It was about two weeks ago. The band playing was Loose Diamonds, and her beau, Troy Young Campbell, was singing. The band played at a local watering hole just before Bruce Springsteen's concert to get the fans pumped up (Loose Diamonds is reportedly one of the Boss' fave local bands). Anyways, my girlfriend Ronda (also a member of this list -- and who I met through this list a year ago, but that's a whole other sordid story of longdistance lesbo love!) and I went to hear the band, secretly hoping that either Bruce himself, or Patty (who lives in Austin), would make a surprise appearance. We had heard it from a good source at the local radio station that was sponsoring the free event that Patty was going to play. But alas, she didn't! However...as Ronda and I were standing there, grooving on Loose Diamonds and special guest Ray Wylie Hubbard, we looked over to our left and saw this beautiful tangle of curly red hair. "Ohmigod, hun!!!" I said. "I think that's Patty!!" We looked down at her feet and sho'nuff, the mysterious woman was wearing clunky black platform shoes - the very type of footwear that I've seen Patty wear on stage. At this point, my heart was racing -- but why? After all, she's just another person, right? I suppose. But on some level, she's not just any person, she's The Voice...the woman who sang to me while I drove up the coast in Northern California on my first solo vacation...the woman who so aptly expresses so many things I have felt and could never find the words for. In short, she's my own female version of The Boss!!! A New England, female Bruce Springsteen come to life! Thus, I was absolutely titillated to be standing there, just a few feet from Patty! Not wanting to disturb her quiet (and anonymous) viewing of her boyfriend's band, I waited for a little bit and then tapped her on the shoulder. "Are you going to play tonite, Patty?" I asked. She looked at me for a sec, probably wondering whether she knew me (she doesn't) or whether I was a freak (I'm not!). She then shook her head and smiled. I shrugged, smiled back, and left it at that. Later, after the show, Ronda and I saw Patty standing outside on a back patio, chatting w/some friends. We waited until the conversation seemed finished and then timidly shuffled up to her. I felt like such a teeny-bopper groupie! Anticipating her possible appearance, I brought my girlfriend's CD sleeve of "Living w/Ghosts," and asked Patty if she would autograph it. She was sweet! She smiled and said sure and signed her name. Then, I proceeded to make a fool out of myself, saying all manner of praiseful things, such as "I just love your music," and "You're such a great poet," and "You songs, like, really speak to me," blah blah blah!" I did, however, manage to ask her if she knows about this MM listserv. She said she does. I then asked her if she'd ever be willing to make an e-mail appearance once in a while. She seemed a little shy then and said she wasn't profficient at email. So I said, "Well Patty, would you ever be open to doing a Q&A with us every great once in a while?" She said she definitely would, and told me to arrange it through her management. Good enough, I thought! So folks, it seems that Patty is willing to answer our questions, but only very periodically, ("like once a year," she said, b/c she's pretty busy.) What do y'all think?? We could submit our questions to Mike and have him complile the 10 or 12 best ones, and then forward them on to Patty's management. Then, at her leisure, she could answer them and Mike could post the answers to the group. What say all of y'all???
