No Emmylou No Patty As major a bummer as this was, I would have stayed for the parade of "unknowns" except that my 10th-grade daughter needed help preparing for an algebra test tomorrow. (She loves LWG, and realized that seeing Patty would have been a valid excuse for delaying our study session until nine-ish.) Oh well, at least I got my six bucks for parking back (and God help me if Patty performed under an alias to keep the crowd manageable!). Larry I in LA AG wrote: > Oh! Evidently Emmy Lou Harris was involved in a car accident recently & had to cancel her appearance at USC this evening. Patty was not at the show either. Very disappointing, but at the same time got to see some new artists, so there you are. Emmy Lou's daughter was there to perform in her place, as well as a member of Emmy Lou's band (who was great, btw), so I hope that means that Emmy Lou has no serious injuries. Hopefully Patty will be able to make it here to LA on her own sometime soon. I guess I shouldn't be too bummed-- I have been fortunate enough to have seen her 3 other times already. You know what they say about addiction though . . .:) Interested to hear how the new material plays out at the MI gigs & those on the East Coast. Take care. Thoughts out to Emmy Lou . . . The sponsors said she had a sinus problem or something like that. Emmylou did not play either. Apparently she had a car accident in Mississippi, where her car flipped over. She's ok, and sent her daughter Megan O'Hearn, to play last night. Disappointing to not see these two in what was a 1,200 person theatre. About 50 showed up. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 20:25:15 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: MM: Patty opening for the Dixie Chicks this summer! Hi folks :-) Just got an email from Patty's management.......some good, some bad.....(you already know the basics of the good :-) First of all, these July dates all have been postponed: July 1st - Annapolis, MD July 2nd - Alexandria, VA July 5th - Harrisonburg, VA while the 4th Of July Washington DC gig has been cancelled. As for the three postponed shows, I was told "they were to be solo shows, and I'm sure that we'll be back sometime in the future" About last nights' cancelled USC gig, Patty just came down with something and could not do the show. Nothing serious, just one of those things. They hope folks weren't too inconvenienced by the last minute cancellation. ....and for the good news....as the subject says, Patty and the band will be opening for the Dixie Chicks this summer! No dates yet, but In the next few days Pattys' management "will be announcing 30-40 band dates". I am not sure if they will be opening for EVERY show on the Chicks tour....guess we'll find out soon enough. I guess the biggest question here is, who gets to sing "Let Him Fly"? My guess is it will be the Chicks, with special guest vocalist Patty Griffin :-) Mike :-) - - * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.quackquack.net/pattyg * * Rachel Martin's Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive is at * http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/patty.html * * Jerry Zigmont's Flaming Red - A Patty Griffin Website is at * http://members.tripod.com/PattyGriffin * * Katie Peterson's Patty Griffin Guitar Tabs Archive is at * http://members.tripod.com/~Lifey/patty.html * * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL and/or AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 19:03:38 PST From: "Paul Russell" Subject: MM: chick flick Cool about the Patty Griffin Band opening for Dixie Chicks! But for some reason I just can't picture it. I've been to a couple of country concerts and I have to say that the Blues Brothers line says it best..."What kind of music do you usually play here, ma'am?" "Oh, we've got both kinds. Country, AND western." At least now I've got a fighting chance to actually see Paty Griffin in concert. Country is so big here you would think it was Nashville or something (they only WISH it was as cool here as Nashville is). This one guy at one of the places I work thinks he's dressing up when he wears his ten gallon hat, chaps, and his huge-ass beltbuckle. I'm not making fun of him mind you, I just come from up northeast where you wear "jacket and tie" for formal company dinners...not him though....yee haw. Anyway, I just hope the Patty Griffin band plays a lot of songs in the key of A...a good country key. Or get a fiddle player for the band, especially if they're gonna play in Texas. Sorry, couldn't resist a little Alabama there...I like that song. Regarding the "Let Him Fly" thing..... My personal opinion is that they could use it as a seque. Patty Griffin could start singing it as her last song, then out come the Dixie Chicks to sing along, finish it off, then take over the stage for their concert. I think it would fly. gotta go drink like the plague....ten minutes left of work and I'm gone. I really heart working nine hours str8...not. peace love and vegetable rights paul ******************************* * We lost our corkscrew, * * and I was forced to live * * on nothing but food and * * water for days. * * --W.C. Anyway, she was amazing!!! She came and sang "I Still Cry" for an encore but before starting she said something along the lines of "this is a song off of the Broken Things album, a wonderful singer/songwriter named Patty Griffin sings it with me on the album" and then said soemthing else nice about Patty but I had started cheering cause I was sooo excited that she talked about Patty :-) heheh Anyway, I thought I would give those of you who have not yet been to the Ark a little info on the venue :-) First off, it seats 400 people. 50 reserved seats, 350 GA seats. The reserved seats are all directly center stage. However there is at least one row (i think.....) of GA tickets in the first 6 rows directly in front of the stage. After about 8 rows of chairs (10 seats across at most...) there is theatre seating. You have a little ledge in front of you to put your drinks and stuff on. There are also GA seats that are really great that are directly to the side of the tiny stage. The people that were sitting there had their feet up on the stage! (a little tacky but they had the chairs pushed up so close to stage that they had nowhere else to put them). The Ark has a full bar, and all kinds of munchies (I'm talking popcorn to cheesecake!) So I had a chat with the soundboard guy and he said that he wouldnt' let us plug into the soundboard but that we were definately welcome to bring our own mic's to record the shows so long as it was ok with the artist. He also said that we could take pictures but only a few - they hate it when people go camera crazy cause it's such a small place and the flash lights up the entire dark theatre. BIG recommendation: DON'T BE LATE! Especially if you have GA seats but as soon as the lights go out that place is pitch black and there is nobody to help you find yer seats! uhm...that's all, i have two loads of laundery that have been patiently waiting to be folded since before I left for the show :-) OH! There is a place right around the block from the Ark called the ....oh of course now I can't remember the name....it'll come to me. Anyway, it's really tiny and looks kinda scummy but it's a downtown ann arbor must hit place - everyone has hit it up at least once, and you should see how jammed they are at 3am!! They are one of the only (if not the only) downtown ann arbor places that stays open 24 hrs! So i think that that's where we should all meet up after the second show - which i'm guessing won't end until about 12 at least judging on how late todays 8pm show got out (11pm). ok..so the name of that place is the Belleville Grill...maybe? heheh I'll remember tomorrow i promise but i'm pretty sure Belleville Grill is close if not right :-) wow...that was a long email... goodnight and thanks for reading! jen http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~jcaputo - ------------------------------------------------------------ Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. - ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 00:22:12 EST From: UMCaner74@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: the ark, and the summer tour Hey Michelle, I'll be there baby! Don and I are driving up from PA to the show.. pretty cool huh? I guess we'll go to any lengths to see our girl! Usually the best way to meet Patty after a show is to go to the front of the stage after she's done playing. Just stand there and wait for (usually the soundman) to direct you to where you should go to meet her. Please keep this amongst list members, b/c I'd hate to be the reason for Patty not doing this anymore since there are 100+ people waiting in front of the stage! About the summer tour. Am I the ONLY one bummed about this?? I mean... I was looking forward to another headlining summer tour.. Please take this next part with a grain of salt, but I saw the Chicks on Lilith Fair last year. The band was awesome, and I don't mean to say anything bad about someone.. but their singer's voice is the ONLY voice I've ever heard live that actually HURT my ears. She grew up like 20 minutes from my house, and she seems like a real nice girl, but I actually had to go hide under the seats to get away from the sound, it was actually nauseating. I think it's great that Patty and the band will be playing in front of maybe 10,000 nightly, and I'm sure there are some Dixie Chicks fans that will run out and buy Patty's CD, and I guess all this attention can only be good for her career. However, her dream is to be the singer of a rock band, I don't see the vast majority of Chicks fans really digging Wiggley Fingers, Silver Bell, Little God, etc.. Maybe I'm only bitching b/c I'll be paying $30+ this summer to see Patty play for 35 minutes, then be forced to leave b/c I can't deal with the singing of the vocalist in the headlining band. Instead of paying $17 to see her HEADLINING 3 times in 4 nights in an intimate setting, not too far from my home. I think this is the only time I've ever complained to this list, so sorry if I made anyone frown, or be upset in any way. :-) Take Care, Dave ************************************************ Last night I dreamt of flying Over hillsides in the snow And I dove down through the clouds Into the valley there below When the fields turned into parking lots My freedom turned to dread The ground rose up to greet me And I jumped up out of bed ~~ The Badlees ~~ ************************************************ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 00:45:03 EST From: UMCaner74@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: not patty related :( Hey Michelle, Uhh, this is my post to make up for the last bitch session that I just had.. Michelle wrote >> i neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to get backstage for the bush/moby show on april 13th at Central Michigan University!!! does anyone have any ideas???? Well, I have an idea, but it may not get you backstage. Actually, this idea revolves around Dave's little fantasy world, so you'll just have to bear with me here.. Bree Sharp is actually opening all the shows on the tour. Luckily for you Bree just happens to be Dave's long-time g/f, amongst other things. (note, this is STILL Dave's fantasy world). So, I'm sure there will be absolutely no problem hooking you up with backstage passes, or anything else you would want that night.. :-) Ok, *Back to Reality Dave!* Sorry Michelle, I can't help you. Emailing Trauma records was probably a good idea, otherwise, I'd just say to wait out by the buses when whatever band you want to meet is leaving. That usually works if they are one of those bands who actually talk to their fans. At any rate.. good luck. If you get to see Bree, tell her her biggest fan who never saw her says "Hello" Actually, please let me know how she is live. I've been dying to go, but haven't had the opportunity yet! I live in L.A. and had planned on going to USC yesterday to see Patty. Her CD's alone are so intense I can't wait to see her in person sometime. However, since I prefer live music, I have found a great artist to fill in. Other L.A. residents should check out Susan Sheller. She's an unsigned singer (but her CD's available at CDbaby.com.) but probably not for long. Her music will be heard on a movie coming out as well as for the opening credits of a Lifetime show hosted by Melissa Etheridge called 2 Ladies From London. I know she's playing every Monday at the Blue Saloon in North Hollywood. AMAZING! If you love Patty you will love Susan too. Let me know what you think!
