Evil Gary ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 08:25:43 -0600 From: "Jason and Jennifer Burton" Subject: MM: Cover Disc I've been on a number of lists where the cover CD idea has been brought up but never executed. Recently on the Ron Sexsmith list though a few people put one together somewhat quietly as a birthday present for Ron. The unique aspect of it though was some of them also contributed originals to the CD. With so many talented performers on the MM list, maybe we should consider letting people like Darcie also contribute an original? Anyway, I don't have a great voice but I do love to sing and play guitar, and often do "Poor Man's House". I'd really love to work up "One Big Love" though. A friend of mine has a 4 track I could record on. So put me down if we're really going to do this thing! No I'm not really writing this naked, but I lacked a solid "subject" this early in the morning. While I hate to be a nay-sayer in all this excitement.... Nay nay nay nay. (I sound like a horse). I think it's a great idea too. As a matter of fact doing a tribute CD for Patty Griffin is total flattery for her. I'm sure she would heart it. However, I don't think that'll fly with the management. They've been rather prickish in the past, remember the MM Private Patty Party we were all going to contribute to have a huge bash? And the management basically said, "up yours, hosers."? Well, I'm thinking it's going to be the same thing for this, only with lawyers emailing us telling us how much they'll sue us for everything we got. I know the thought is that we could make this CD for Patty Griffin, and distribute it amongst ourselves, so no one would profit off of it. But here's the dilly... 1) we most definitely need permission or the courts will rule plagarism. 2) Patty Griffin is "relatively" a new artist on the scene. Right now management would want more attention to her playing the songs than us. 3) We might even end up screwing ourselves royally by distributing this burnt CD amongst ourselves. I think there are like a hundred or so members on this list, with more piling in everyday. Let's say someone of ill-report decides he likes Patty Griffin and signs up for this list. He sees this CD we made mentioned and wants a copy for himself. Then in a year Patty Griffin is all in the spot-light and everyone knows her. Then that dude decides to start copying that CD we made and sell it. Totally good news for him, totally bad news for Patty Griffin's Management. I don't know, maybe I'm just being too negative about the whole thing. I also keep thinking about the Mad-Mission Tee-shirts we were going to make with a Patty Griffin album cover and got shot down for that. What I can see about this whole situation, though, is a bunch of us taping ourselves playing Patty Griffin songs (well not me, cuz I play drums, unless I do drumming "interpretations" of the songs ha ha) and sending it to one person who then dubs a master tape, and then gives that master tape to Patty Griffin at one of her concerts (in which she never comes this way I might add). I would use tapes or DAT because those media are not as "fashionable" to the industry. You're still doing the same thing and dealing with the same legal issues, however doing it on a fading medium might make it more appealing to the management. Those are my thoughts on this idea. Like I said, I think it's great and was thinking about how I could contribute....until I thought about all that other crap. If this gets good to go, then I'm in for a copy too. But think cautiously about how to handle this...about how to carefully word your letter to the management to get the maximum allowances for copying Ms. Griffin's stuff for the tribute. Who knows? Maybe they'll let you only do Living With Ghost material. Ya gotta keep that in mind as well. So, maybe the management has gotten tired of that stick being planted so far up their asses that they taste wood, but I doubt it. Try going higher up to Patty Griffin if you can....that is if she hasn't given up all the rights to her songs or whatever those record company contracts do. Who knows what she'll say. tally ho! I need to work on my paper that's due tomorrow. If no one has volunteered yet, I would be willing to take on this project. It should prove to be interesting and fun and would hopefully somehow make up for the delay of Rarities 2. It is an hour long show and Patty is on the last half of the show (I think she starts at about the 28 minute mark if I recal correctly). This show airs on PBS in the United States (the Public Broadcasting System). Please beware that not all PBS stations will be showing the repeat that very weekend. Some stations wil likely be showing it the next or even two weekends after. The safest way to be sure is to call your local PBS station. You can find information (including a television schedule) about your local station on the web at www.pbs.org and then click on the "station finder". The Sessions web site STILL does not list their page for Patty in the artist index, but you can find it at: http://www.sessionsatwest54th.com/artists/griffin03 On that site you will find a bunch of info about this episode, PLUS a lot of extras like Windows Wallpaper of Patty, some performance and interview Real Audio and Real Video, a photo gallery, a WinAmp skin and a transcript of John Hiatts' interview with Patty.
