Would anyone here be > interested in doing that? sounds good... i've never undertaken one of patty's songs before... the vocal range tends to be a stumbling block, LOL... but i'd been toying with the idea of transposing one of hers to suit my voice... so maybe this is the perfect opportunity... anyone have strong feelings one way or the other on guys covering patty's songs? has it been done before? i think some would work better than others... like I would probably NOT do "let him fly"... you change those pronouns and you wind up like shawn colvin singing "every little thing HE does is magic"... not that shawn isn't fantastic but ouch, that cover! not her finest moment... - --rICH Listen to Rich: Visit THE RICH HOMEPAGE to hear tracks from LIFE/DEATH... 15 songs of romance and retribution for those who know all too well... E-mail Darcie. This woman is awesome! She posted (on this list) her new cd was available for $12 so I said, sure I'll try it. Well, this is one of the best new recordings I've bought in a long time. Sometimes the first time you hear a song it just grabs you. Patty's "Mary" and "Poor Man's House," Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey" or "In the Garden" and The Clash' "Magnificent Seven" come to mind. Darcie has a song called "Goodbye" (not a Patty cover) that is wonderful. I've played it and the whole cd over and over. She writes much wiser than her years (I think she's 17 or something) and sings with a passion. Now, I've never met Darcie, so this e-mail is completely unsolicited. But if you're looking for something new that you'll gladly keep in your cd player for a long time, check her out. In a few years when lots of radio stations all over the country are playing her I'll be able to tell all my friends, (who think they're on the cusp of new music) oh yeah, I've been listening to her for a long time. One more thing...I sent my check out and got the cd back faster than amazon.com sends books out. Go Darcie Maybe someday I'll get to see her and Patty on the same gig. As it stands, I've never seen either but I'm hoping Patty will get up to the Buffalo, NY area pushing the new record. Darcie, you're welcome up here, too! I can hear all the beautiful voices I've heard on this list doing this CD now! Holy cow, I'm so excited! I have so many recommendations here.. Nancy, you love "Peter Pan" so much! .. I know there are other Patty songs that you play, but that would be Awesome! I have always been able to hear you singing Moses in my head. In my opinion, you're the ONLY other person on earth that I could hear singing this song! Mary Arden Collins does "Change".. and I know she has done other Patty songs too, but I distinctly remember an awesome version of that! Darice plays "I Write The Book" with so much emotion... Wow! Jess, I can totally hear you singing "Goodbye", and Patty Blee.. how about a little "Sweet Lorraine"?? Sharyn Murray, umm.. can you say "Forgiveness"? :-) Ok, so I'm obviously out of control with this idea. This is just what I'm imagining in my head.. and all of my examples are all the MM'ers that I've actually had the pleasure to hear play. Sorry if I'm getting carried away here, but this sounds so exciting early on this Sunday morning... after playing drinking games all night last night.. (which brings up a question.. do the people of this list have a drinking problem?) I didn't think I'd have THIS MUCH energy all day today! Well Jess, I think you just came up with the greatest idea I've heard in a long, long time.. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that this idea gets accomplished! Dave says: > Well Jess, I think you just came up with the greatest idea I've heard in a > long, long time.. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that this idea gets > accomplished! I think we should do it. We need someone to organize it, though, and I really don't have the time to take on anything else, otherwise I would... But things like, the organization of who is doing what songs, the graphic design, burning the CDs, etc... And we should also find out about the rights to the songs and if we can do this. Since we wouldn't be selling the CD it shouldn't be that much of a problem... maybe we should get the blessing of her management or something before we go ahead? Anyway, just some thoughts. On the other list we did this on it was such a huge hit. There were like 20 songs and everyone of them was so different... some were just 4-track stuff, others were recorded on the computer or a hand held tape recorder... Then someone mixed them all and mastered it a bit before burning them... So.... anyone else want to do this!??! Jess ps: I really want to do Let her Fly or Tony :) http://www.aquezada.com/jess | www.mp3.com/jessweiser ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2000 11:47:46 -0500 (EST) From: runrunrun@dellmail.com Subject: MM: Fwd: [brokenthings] "Where The Heart Is" movie/movie soundtrack CD features EH Does anyone know anything about this???? HAHAHA - well, after the night I had last night, i'd have to say i'm in the "drinking problem club" :) not really a problem..... it was just funny to read that after the enormous amount of alcohol i drank last night!!!!! :) > Well Jess, I think you just came up with the greatest idea I've heard in a > long, long time.. I will be keeping my fingers crossed that this idea gets > accomplished! and, i have to say, this idea sounds really flippin' cool!!!!! I am just learning how to play guitar and i'd say i have a pretty okay voice. I've been a musician (clarinet player) for 13 years now and have *finally* decided it's time to put some of that counting/reading/rhythm training from all those years to another instrument where i can play along to my favorite tunes. there are some songs of patty's that i think i can sing pretty okay (of course, i'm usually in the shower or when i'm just fartin' around) but i don't know if i could actually contribute to the cd project.....although it'd be such an awesome feeling!!! "Long Ride Home" and "You Decided" are the ones i think are okay for me mainly b/c her range isn't too difficult for me in those songs. Anyways, if this ever gets underway, make sure and keep the list abreast....maybe i'll have gathered enough courage and learned enough guitar by then :) Cool idea.... What I have covered of Patty so far is: Every Little Bit (I slow it down and blues it up a tad) Tony (LOVE playing this tune) Forgiveness (those hammer ons can get me) Sweet Lorraine (almost like Tony cept capo on 3rd) Moses (haven't played it in a while) You Never Get What You Want and in progress: Time Will Do The Talking I Write the Book (as soon as I can get my hands on a Rarities) We Are Water (ditto to the aforementioned statement)...
