If that song is as personal as I think most of Patty's songs are , we have a real rapport there. I have a definite take on the song , & since Jess asked....... Clouds are usually symbolic of sadness or depression. I wouldn't say that I had an UNhappy childhood , as I remember being satisfied with life & myself most of the time. I was high spirited some of the time , but in looking back , I can't say I had a HAPPY childhood either. On becoming older & facing the normal problems of adulthood I think I became a bit more depressive & got very depressed after my divorce. Then I went through some emotional changes & broke clear of the clouds that I never noticed before. I have to say that I flew high in the "Blue Sky" for a long time after that , but again slipped below those clouds w/o noticing. A number of events in the past few years made me realize it , the most recent of which was Patty's music. I'm sure that a lot of others , including Patty , have had the same experience to varying degrees. There are a few of her lyrics that really brought that home to me; I was born down under these clouds So I stand up & sing it out loud Someone's still alive under this shroud And I don't wanna die Under these clouds Patty Griffin "Under These Clouds" I might get to the end of my life Find out everyone was lying I don't think that I'm afraid anymore And say that I would rather die trying Patty Griffin "Swing Me South" Darcie really started an avalanche with this one. A lot of great & funny responses. Sarah - What up wit' "where ma girls at?" ? That was a quick jump from lurker to spotlight. "I carry my tunes in a sack" "We sound great! (At least as far as I'm concerned--I'll ask the neighbors)" "Driving under Patty's influence" "I'm not sure that the howling dogs that tend to inspire would add much to my duet with Patty" Actually , after I decided on "Under These Clouds" , my mind jumped to two Stevie Nicks duets that I would like to sing(?) with Patty even more. "Leather & Lace" with Don Henley(No relation-blood or voice) & "Stop Draggin' my Heart Around" with Tom Petty. Since you all distracted me from my "Cruisin' with Patty" preparations , I may as well update you on the progress(or lack of it) of the video compilation. I still have only two tapes & think that perhaps my Alma Mater (The Postal Service) may have fallen down on the job.If I don't get the others by the time I get back , it may take another week or two before I start making the masters. If I weren't leaving for a week , I would be glad to make a tape for someone who could copy it for others. I hope someone volunteers , but if you don't get a response , check with me in ten days or so. Well , I'm off to see the Wizard. Down the Yellow Brick Road. I have no red shoes , though. Maybe I can borrow Patty's or Dorothy's. "Me & my red shoes , nothing can please us". I'll report to the MMers when I get back. It's one of those things You have to feel To be true Tom Petty "Refugee" No one can possibly know what is about to happen. It is happening each time , for the first time , for the only time. I would sing "Tony" if I had just one to pick. As for singing harmony, I was told by a friend that only 4% of the world's population has the ability to sing harmony without having some significant musical training. That training could include (but not be limited to) interval training, both on paper and by ear, chord theory, scales in all popular modes, etc. It is possible to learn to sing harmony pretty much on your own. I'm in a band with two other musicians, and we do two and three part harmony on almost every song, kind of our trademark. I'm the only one with any musical training. One member couldn't sing harmony spontaneously when we started but now she can. So there ya go. Hi Everyone, This is really off-topic but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about a singer named Anne Breven (sp???) The only reason I've heard of her is because she was on Howard Stern the other morning (Great place to find new music, eh?) Anyway, she sang a beautiful song on the show and I'm looking to pick up her album. I think she said that the name of her band was "anntenae" and that they had a web site with their albums on it at anntanae.com but I don't know how to spell anntenae and no matter how I change the variations of spelling I can't seem to find the website so maybe I have the name wrong.... Anyway, I'd really appreciate the help! Anne is the one that wrote the song "Torn" that Natalie Imbruglia sang... (as far as I could tell from the interview they weren't too happy with her performance of the song). Ok thats' all! One way is to find music that has a lot of it...Beatles, Everly Brothers, Simon & Garfunkel etc.. and sing along or you can learn lots of theory and ear training and approach it that way. I think the first method is more fun.
