Hey guys, This evening at the Keswick Theatre, in a set that was MUCH longer than even I had hoped for as an opening act, Patty gave one of the most inspiring and emotional performances I have EVER seen her give! Along with older songs, One More Girl, Change, Sweet Lorraine, Mary, and Flaming Red (with the SLOW bluesy intro), Patty also wowed the crowd with about 5 new songs that I'm sure the majority of which will be on the new CD. The only new song that I definitely know the title of is Makin' Pies, but let me tell you that all the new material is awesome! I can not wait for the new cd to come out now! There were so many highlights to the show tonight. Mary was as beautiful as it ever is (which in my opinion is as beautiful as ANYTHING can possibly be), and One More Girl hit me harder tonight than it had in the previous few times that I had heard her play it live. Sweet Lorraine was played with that weird echo effect (on the guitar) that someone had described so well before. I don't remember the name of the effect, but in essence what it does is make the speaker sound like it's turning in different directions as the sound is coming out. It's a VERY nice effect for this song, I can only imagine how the song would have sounded with this effect on the LWG CD. Patty really seemed to be energized by the new material, and rightfully so, considering she's been playing alot of the same songs from FR for well over a year now. Karla and I were describing the feeling you get from Patty's voice.... you know, the one where you get this tingly feeling that starts at your ears, and goes down the entire length of your spine, the whole way to your butt! It's just incredible, I swear I had goosebumps for almost her entire performance tonight. I LOVE Patty's shows with the band, but there is just something about her solo performances that are so special to me. I don't know if it's b/c I had seen her 4 times solo before she was ever with the band, and it brings back the feeling I had when I first discovered her... or if it's because her voice REALLY shines when it's just her and her acoustic guitar.. As much as I love the solo shows, I'm certainly not calling for her to go back to being a solo artist though. She has so much more flexibility as an artist with the band. It allows her more freedom to experiment with new sounds etc... and to be honest, Patty's band ROCKS! The occasional solo show is welcome ANY TIME though in my book. To everyone attending the Fez shows, you're in for a real treat! I REALLY REALLY wish I could make it! Peace, Love, and Music. I admit that I've never really listened to The Dixie Chicks before and was surprised by how talented they are. However, the lead vocalist just cannot compare to Patty. Granted she did a serviceable job on "Let Him Fly" but it was simply lacking something. Also, I found it weird that she did a note-for-note mimicry of Patty...even the Red ones more improvisational wailing at the end. The Dixie Chick really should have tried to put her own stamp on the tune. Plus, I was kinda disappointed that there was no mention of Patty, either in the televised interview or the performance. Especially with her getting her own Session later in the season, it would have been a nice nod to someone that has inspired the Chicks. Just my opinion, Dan http://www.angelfire.com/ga/foolishlove/ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 11:49:08 -0500 (EST) From: Amy Suzanne Butler Subject: Re: MM: Re: Chicks' "Let Him Fly" Dan and others -- I, too, was disappointed that there was no mention of Patty in the televised interview. However, I thought I heard Natalie Maines mumble "This is a Patty Griffin song" before singing Let Him Fly. It would have been easy to miss -- especially for anyone not hanging on their every word to hear the name Patty Griffin. Did anyone else hear that, or was it simply my overimaginative ears? Whether they said it or not, bummer for the Patty publicity department. Did Patty sing Let Him Fly at her Sessions taping? If so, I wonder if they'll televise it. Prolly not. Amy ps -- I have been tryin *hard* not to be a Dixie Chicks fan. Regardless of the catchiness (is that a word?) of their songs, they struck me as too bimbo-ish. Until now. I was very impressed with them on Sessions. The song "You Were Mine" made me cry and punch my fiance in the arm -- too bad that crumby guys cause songs like that to be written. (I often blame him for the crap heaped upon women by his sex. Fortunately, he loves me anyway.) And didn't Sheryl Crow sound/look awsome?! "Fly" is now on my Santa list :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 12:39:39 EST From: Mercyme37@aol.com Subject: MM: Patty at the Keswick WOW! Last's nights concert at the Keswick left me speechless! Which in it's self is a great feat to do. Dave, basically said it all. But Patty sang one song that instantly became my favorite. It was new and I have no idea of it's title but the words were something like this: You don't know, you don't know about ......women. If you kiss her ass, she may let you kiss her ass. I could have left a word out, but that was the gist of the chorus. Her talent as a song writer is incredible, combined with her talent for singing and playing the guitar.......AMAZING. I have never heard the song One More Girl before. Patty performed it masterfully. The emotion she puts in her music and thus in us is incredible. When she sang Mary, I had tears in my eyes. I just realized Patty doesn't sing songs, she gives birth to them. And for each and every child she produces I am grateful for what they contribute to my world. I have never heard Patty solo. That was a treat. It was so intimate, honest and raw. I love her music with the band. I really enjoy the way she and the band rocks together. The band adds a great element to the whole thing. And they seem to have so much fun, but there is something special when it's just Patty and her guitar. All those going to The Fez tonight; Be on the look out for the most wonderful experience ever! Dave was right when he said we got the chills down our spines. Goosebumps through most of her set! Even the sound guy, Randy, got them! I have sent it twice, but I have never gotten it on my end. For some reason it doesn't seem as if it's getting through. Please email me if you HAVE received this before. Then I'll know if it's just me or what is really going on. ( Did that make any sense?). Just wanted to let you all know about a great new singer I heard Tuesday night. I went to see William Topley at Schuba's here in Chicago (who, if you haven't heard him either, you should definitely check out), and Alice Peacock opened for him. I hd never heard of her before and didn't know what to expect. She was awesome and had everybody quite happy by the end of her set. I bought her cd there and you can hear it and buy it on her website, too (www.AlicePeacock.com). The cd is not nearly as good as the show was though, so I was a little upset. Just thought you might want to check her out. For anyone in Chicago, she is playing a few more dates in the city and suburbs still. A free one in Wheaton in January. Definitely worth the drive. Thanks for listening, Terri ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 17:37:34 EST From: COOLTUNES5@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Re: Chicks' "Let Him Fly" you werent mistaken, thats exactly what she said ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 00:01:45 -0800 From: Mike Acerbo Subject: MM: Patty at Fez rarities 2 Hey guys just got back from Fez. Patty rocks! Sang tons of new....including a tune about Boston (awesome) a slower version of the Smiths' Half a Person, a song from the point of view of a dead person (very good), Makin Pies (awesome), Twisted (sounded much better acoustic), and this great tune she closed with. I love her lyrics....noone has a way with words like she does. She also sang Lorraine, Change, Goodbye, Mary, Little God(Ilike the band version at sessions much better),One More Girl, and Red . My friends (who I bought LWG for wanted to hear more of those tunes. It would have been nice, but they were still blown away by her performance. Overall it was a great show. She seemed to shy away from some of the belting in Change and Red. I wonder if her voice is tireing from all of the screaming she has to do to sing over the band. It cracked a couple of times during the filming of Sessions as well. She still sounded TOTALLY Amazing though. Wore a cool red dress, black top "new" black shoes-hair down. Rarities 2 guy get in touch. I have a nice recording of the show with all of these tunes....!!!!!!:) Anyway I'm goin again tomorrow- it's my birthday can't think of a better way to spend it....would love to hear Nobodies Crying or No More Illusions..Anyway I'll update u on tomorrow's show as well....Mike ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 00:59:32 -0500 From: "Sarah Stanley" Subject: MM: Re: Patty at Fez rarities 2 > I have a nice recording of the show with > all of these tunes....!!!!!!:) Anyway I'm goin again tomorrow- it's my > birthday can't think of a better way to spend it....would love to hear > Nobodies Crying or No More Illusions..Anyway I'll update u on tomorrow's > show as well....Mike man, you guys all suck! ;-) Just kidding....i am just envious. There are no Patty anythings over here (Michigan) and I'm really really jealous of all of you - especially that she is doing this stuff acoustic. That's my favorite. AND you recorded it??? ugh...you wouldn't happen to want to trade that for anything would you? ;-) heee heee..... Waiting patiently for new album and Sessions airing....sigh...
