Hi all, I thought that in a group that appreciates good writting (musically) there'd definitely be some writers that might be interested in this. Make sure to reply to me, not to the list if you're interested. Also, pass this on to anyone you know that might want to submit. Thanks! Paul, when it comes down to religion, you really can't deny that there are aspects of almost any and all that affect both genders differently. Especially when it comes down to extremely devout families/people. I know that growing up in a fundamentally religious and devout family will effect a female child differently than a male child and vice-versa. That's really just one aspect of it. It's a widely known fact that many religions at the core base assume that a woman must stay at home with the children and take care of the household. Obviously, this will affect the way that both women and men will have different experiences, ideas and emotions regarding religion in their life. Furthermore, there are many idiosyncracies and rules ingrained in almost any religion that are specific to gender (i.e. Catholicism denies women the right to priesthood; Orthodox Jewish men are not allowed to have physical contact with women when they are menstrating, etc... One need only read the bible to get a brief idea about how women have been viewed religiously throughout history). Really, these are just examples off of the top of my head that illustrate a perfectly valid reason to write a book that specifically points out the experience of women, and only women, and how their gender relates to their religion. Lastly, and you may beg to differ, but I think that many of us would agree that a large portion of the main-stream media, literature and even still art and culture - are male-centric. Perhaps you don't have a problem with that, but I find it frustrating to consisitently be reminded by the society that I live in that issues and views regarding women are unimportant. Personally, I really don't think that everything needs to have a gender attached to it, but I do think that you'll find that when there *is* an implied gender, it is almost always male. Sheesh. Sorry this is so long and so completely unrelated to Patty Griffin and her incredible, inspiring music. - --Elena > -----Original Message----- > From: Paul Russell [SMTP:iceburrrg@hotmail.com] > Sent: Thursday, October 28, 1999 3:51 PM > To: mad-mission@smoe.org > Subject: MM: that was interesting > > Looking for women writers, huh? > > so, I suppose you can't be a man writer then. > > What about those who were at one time a woman, but then changed to a man? > Or > someone who is now a woman, but once was a man?
