Without over-explaining too much, basically stations are divided according to formats--and those stations keep a log of the stuff they play and report it to trade magazines on a weekly basis so that other stations nationwide can know what everyone else is playing (in most cases so they can copycat). Once, twice, or several times a year, all the music directors, program directors and station managers and stuff all get together and convene and swap notes--so what you might think is unique to your local station might actually be something lots of them do, nationwide. The main trade magazine we follow is Gavin. Right now, Patty is charted at #14 on Gavin's A3... with 13 stations reporting 153 spins for the week of 7/5 (they are on a hiatus with their reporting right now, so they are late and a little behind). Another popular trade mag is R&R (Radio & Records). They are showing "Blue Sky" at #8. Still others are, CMJ, Totally Adult, and the Album Network. Both commercial and non-commercial stations can report to the trades, though not all stations report.... and, not all stations report to ALL of the trades. It's really kinda inconsistent if you ask me... so Patty is prolly getting lots more airplay than those trades are reporting.... i mean, 13 A3 stations?? come on! there is more like 100 in existence. I would love to see them all report their playlists consistently... the charts would read a lot differently, and be more consistent with what is actually going on in radio. (I would think). One MD in California told me that he reports one thing and actually plays another... in order to manipulate trend in favor of the song the artist is promoting. So he may report that he is playing "Blue Sky" when he is actually burning up "Tony" 10 times a week. Hmm... if all of them do that to some degree, it makes you wonder what is *really* being played on radio nationwide. Mimi (who guesses she answered your question, but when she read the last sentence, realized that she didnt-really! hope that helps :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 06:20:46 -0500 From: "James P / Cristina M" Subject: MM: Re: Patty charting on radio Wow, thanks Mimi! I no NOTHING about how radio works and that did help. It makes me wonder what our A3 station out here, Lightning 100 (WRLT), is reporting with Patty. They play her ALL the time. I mean, ALL the time. You can always count on hearing her songs 3 or 4 times everyday and they don't JUST play "Blue Sky." I've heard them play "Flaming Red," "Tony," "Wiggly Fingahs" (I know it's misspelled), and especially "Change." They've probably played the entire album at some point and this is why she has such an enormous following here. Nothing made me happier than seeing how packed the audience was when she played a music festival here. Other MM'ers (hey Misty and Julie!) and I were RIGHT up front. We knew better and got our spots early. Several times I looked behind me and saw a beautiful sea of faces singing along with Patty. Damn, that was a great show! To the band: Next time y'all come out to Nashville, can ya vary up the set list? I've seen Patty 3 times in the past 6 months and EVERY set list was exactly the same. Pleeeeaaase?????For me??? -Cristina - -----Original Message----- From: Mooodeee@aol.com To: mad-mission@smoe.org Date: Thursday, July 29, 1999 1:09 AM Subject: MM: Patty charting on radio >As random as radio airplay may seem to some, it's actually more of a rigid >science than most people realize. I was wondering if anyone was going to the Newport Folk Festival - it's a great lineup, including PATTY! I'd love to run into some mad-mishers there...Anyone know if she's playing with or without the band? I got spoiled - the last time I saw her, she did a full acoustic set! (I actually like the band, but I'm a big sap - nothing touches me like acoustic music, especially patty's!) Anyone go to Falcon Ridge? WHAT A GREAT FESTIVAL! If you haven't gone, give it some consideration - I have the best time every year! Email me for some info or insights Someone mentioned the Nields Nook - is that a good list? I'm a new convert to Katryna, Nerissa and the Daves- is there a digest version? A quick suggestion - if you have the chance - pick up the Lori McKenna album "Paper Wings and Halo" - if you liked LWG, you will very likely love this album! If you're going to Newport - I believe that Lori will do at least a song or two during the Respond Artists set on the little stage - you should catch her! I haven't fully been following the big fight - but Mimi, if you're lurking - I'm sad that you've gone - I always enjoyed your input to the list! - - Laurel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 07:54:51 -0400 From: Gary Jacques Subject: MM: RE: Newport, the Nields, and a Music Suggestion - -----Original Message----- From: Gary Jacques Sent: Thursday, July 29, 1999 7:46 AM To: 'lgrady@LNMTA.bentley.edu'; mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: RE: Newport, the Nields, and a Music Suggestion Yeah, My wife and I will be there. Can you tell that I wrote that at 6 in the morning and that my brain is completely fried from writing too many papers! I wrote, "I no nothing." Good grief! And I'm an English major! Well, I'm sure everyone got a good laugh, but I hope that everyone realizes that YES, I do "know" the English language and meant to write "I KNOW nothing about A3 radio..." Okay, now it's 8 in the morning, I've had coffee, my brain is finally coherent, and I'm off to school since I just completed my seven page paper about feminism in "The Yellow Wallpaper." ARRGH!! Wasn't there some brilliant redhead (other than Patty) who once sang, "and the atrocities of school, I can't forgive...."? This is nothing more than a shameless plug for my band, Beasley, to those of you who are in the Southern California area. The rest of you can hit "delete" now. We are playing this Friday night, pertinent info below: Friday, July 30th at Sacred Grounds 399 W. 6th St. San Pedro 310) 514-0800 $5 9PM sharp I'm horrible at descriptions, but if I said we sounded exactly like Patty Griffin would you go? We don't, so let's get that out of the way, but I can say with absolute honesty that we do not suck. Imagine early 10,000 Maniacs arranged by Brian Wilson. That's the best I can do. I wish we had a web site where you could stream something, but that's a ways off yet. So if you're interested in some good local music, give us a chance. Thanks for your time, - -Chris P.S. It's our record release party so we'll have discs for sale if you like what you hear. Do you play her in the store while you're at work alot? I used to work in a music store too. When I'd play a CD alot, I'd also sell ALOT of it. It's surprising how many people walk into a store, and get hooked on something that's being played in the store's CD player. Sometimes, you sell stuff that you would never really expect many other people to enjoy. Ok..just my 2 cents.. I'd like to know how my favorite radion station, WTTS in Bloomington, Indiana, is classified. Amy >> Hi Amy, I know WTTS reports A3 to Gavin, only because I bought their pricey and 25% inaccurate 1999 Gavin music industry guide phonebook thingie. (Plus they are in my A3 call list and I talk to them regularly and at least keep a general idea of what new stuff they add each week). Usually the trades dont report the stations who report because that would mean homework for them... Trades put out a new magazine issue every week, so profiling each station every week would be very useful to us but tedius to them. Plus they like to try to sell the info once a year in book form, showing what station reports to what format. In each issue, Gavin does give what they call an "A3 Boomer Grid" in which they select some top reporting stations to show you what artists they are reporting and how many spins. I'm at home right now and I dont have a current issue, so I couldnt tell you how many spins WTTS is specifically reporting for Patty, but I could ask next time i talk to 'em if ur curious:-) Mimi ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V3 #223 *********************************
