The stations in the DC/Baltimore area SUCK! (With the exception of one very cool station, WRNR in Annapolis, which I can't get in DC or Northern Virginia!!) This is surprising because there are some great venues here that bring great artists, like the Birchmere, Rams Head, and IOTA. So to those of you in LA, just remember how lucky you are! WXPN had Patty in for singer songwriter weekend last year..this year Steve Earl and Richard Thompson at Penns landing in Philly on the 18th of July. Also, Imagine Radio has been great. In case some of you don't know about it, check it out, you can create YOUR OWN STATION! All you need is Real Audio. You can see who is played on my station or even listen to it at: http://www.imagineradio.com/default.asp?A=scenes/show.asp?stationid=7267 50 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 09:14:58 -0500 From: "James P / Cristina M" Subject: MM: Re: People who are spoiled by good radio - -----Original Message----- From: Antall, Scott To: 'mad-mission@smoe.org' Date: Thursday, June 17, 1999 8:05 AM Subject: MM: People who are spoiled by good radio >So to those of you in LA, just remember how lucky you are! I have NEVER >heard Patty on the radio here! From what I've heard, those out in LA aren't all that lucky. I myself never knew what it was like to have a kick ass radio station until I moved here (Nashville). The station is WRLT, and OH MY GOD do they support Patty! They do broadcast over the web and have some really awesome shows like Sunday morning Jazz (REAL Jazz, not Kenny G), acoustic cafe, and so on. For a time they were using the recordings of callers who had left their opinions of the radio station as part of an advertising/ station identification thing. One guy, and I have this on tape, who called was in town making a film. He's from LA and just went on and on about how they have NOTHING like WRLT in LA "as advanced as it's supposed to be" (those are his words not mine). Actually, I think he called WRLT the best in the country. Wow, huh? Growing up in Houston, I never got exposed to great music through the radio. It was impossible, and still is there. If I was still living in Houston today, I probably would of never known who Patty is or any of the other great bands that get radio exposure on Lightning 100 (WRLT). Not that she needs the exposure anymore, but they actually play "God" by Tori Amos. That's some balls there, honey! Now, if they'd only play "Precious Things"....okay, I won't push my luck! I know there is a woman on this list from Houston and I'm curious to know how she found out about Patty in a city, "as advanced as it's supposed to be," that only has "The Buzz" as their "alternative" station. Unless they've made some rapid, advanced changes since I was last there (December), I believe they still only have KRBE (Top 40), The Buzz ("alternative"), and KLOL (is that still a classic rock station?). She's probably much more resourceful than I was when I lived there. So whoever you are (Cheryl?), come forward and tell me if Houston is making ANY advances towards respecting their radio audiences. I might have to move back there for a year to gain back my state residency for grad school at UT. I wish they would make some changes out there so that when I regress into all my bad, awful memories of my life there, I can have some good music to listen to. They are non-commercial tho, and have talk programs during the day, I believe. If you are wanting to establish your residency in TX so you can apply for UT, if you go to UT/Austin... KGSR in Austin is a good A3 station, and they support Patty very much. Lately, though, i am not as pleased with them because they aren't playing as many female artists as they should. There are certain new england and northeastern-area folkies that i really love, but for some reason Jody Denberg will not play them... David Wilcox, Jennifer Kimball, Jonatha Brooke (she gets support whenever she is in town but when she leaves they stop), Dar Williams, John Gorka, Ellis Paul, The Pushstars, etc... One that I am really pissed about KGSR never playing anymore is Mary Chapin Carpenter. She has a new album out and its great and she will be here next week, but Denberg has not played a single note. I mean, shawn colvin and mary chapin are best friends, and KGSR worship's shawn like they claim to have discovered her or something, but they won't play chapin, in spite of the fact that shawn sings and plays on many of her songs. IMHO i think they are playing too much whiney twangy male music herelately... (Can you tell I am on the verge of protest? eep... I think I will withhold beyond this point). err... i guess, take what you need from that and leave the rest. I would LOVE so much to have it, and would greatly appreciate anyone's help. I think she is so incredible and inspiring, to say the least! I truly hope we can do our part to make her be heard. I have introduced her music to several friends, and they are now big fans too! Thanks a Bunch! Hey guys, Just a reminder to all "REAL" Patty fans to at least do 1 of 2 things tomorrow... 1. Stay up LATE and watch Patty rock the stage of the Craig Kilborn show like it's NEVER been rocked before!!! 2. Set your DAMN VCR to record on CBS after the Letterman show. Patty may actually have a good chance of having couch time on the Kilborn show. His show is pretty new, but from the few shows I've seen, he almost always talks to the musical guests. I can't guarantee anything, but that's what I've seen thusfar! ..or you could just do like me, and not only stay up, but also record the show for future enjoyment. :-) GO Patty Jean!! :-) Have a great weekend everyone.
