We've decided to go with her already established club of over 25 members already, rather than the one I just started. There is a message board there, as well as a chat room where we can get together! I think the majority of us are on the east coast, but there are alot of us that are on the west coast..or somewhere in between..Jen, Marc, Ruby, Jen, Kate, Paul, and Ronda just to name a FEW. So I don't know if trying a once a week get together is best, or if a general time during weeknights where you can just go and see if anyone's there is the best bet to get alot of people there at once. I'm guessing that it will be tough to just say...8pm EST on Wednesday nights is going to make everyone happy, and I don't want to leave anyone out. So to make a long story shorter..I think just to say, between 8 and 9 EST, between 5 and 6 PST any night, may be a good idea...let me kow if you guys think this works or not. Of course, we could just be spontaneous and just show up whenever we damn well feel like it too...I really enjoy alot of you guy's posts..and it would be great to not only get to know you all better..but be able to chat about Patty amongst each other instead of email every once in a while! Ok, here's the link to the club! Yahoo! Clubs pattygriffin If the link doesn't work..here is the address http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/pattygriffin Have a good night/day everyone! The world would be an awesome place if we were just all considered people having a human experience. Not to contradict myself but, I think it is very positive that performers aren't afraid to be who they really are--it opens the doors for all of us to be more liberated. It hopefully one day will create an attitude of apathy toward people's differences. I am bi, and I know that Patty's following consists of all different people, but lots of queer women have always been into chick rock, woman folk singers, etc. It's the strong woman thing. The independent thinker thing. But I don't think it has any link to why I listen to her. I am a huge Nanci Griffith fan, who is open minded and liberal but has never, to my knowledge, written lyrics about non-straight people much. Patty is beautiful, I can't deny that! I don't need queerness to be the focus of music I listen to. In fact, when the Indigo Girls went more in that direction I got turned off. Life is stories and stories include all kinds of people!! It was in the July 9-23, 1998 issue (Madonna on the cover), in the Grapevine section. They were talking about the concert Jewel did and then mentioned that Cindy Lee Berryhill has done 16 living room concerts, saying "she has played in about sixteen homes, sometimes drawing more that 100 fans, each of whom donates $10" ($10!! wouldn't that be nice, lol). Then it says, ""The Living Room Tour" trend has spread, and subsequent shows have been held in cities across the country. While many of these artists are local folk singers, higher-profile acts such as Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin and Steve Poltz have expressed interest." And it says that Steve Poltz has done a living room concert and was hoping to do at least 6 more during his tour and "This is about as intimate as it gets..." Just wanted you guys to know that it really was in there, it just took me a while to find it, lol. But I can understand not wanting to do it too. I mean, wouldn't it be kind of freaky to have these people staring at you so close up, not knowing them, not knowing if anyone's kinda psycho or anything. Not saying that anyone is, just that how is she supposed to know. Not saying that anyone is, just that how is she supposed to know. >> I've been to a few of these mentioned Living Room concerts. Sure, they're low profile, and they don't make big profits, but they're wonderful. I went to one a couple of years ago with Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummell on my birthday, where they sang to me and then joined in eating the birthday cake. After the concert a few w I went to had Cindy Lee (again), Lisa Sanders, and another girl who's name I forget, which really sucks because she was the best of the three and I got her album. Anyway, the concert was at a beach house, and it was wonderful because there was singing all evening long, continuing long after the sun went down. BUT, let me also say this- the LRT is the kind of thing that only works for people who can interact well with their fans on a close-up level. Steve, Cindy Lee, Elizabeth- most of the people who did the concerts were Jewel's singing cronies in San Diego back in the old days. The Living Room Tour was started as these artists doing small concerts for people on the Jewel mailing list. Most of these artists mostly enjoyed travelling the country and singing for small groups of people who had heard of them before and were truly interested in the money-instead of opening for some bigger star when most of the audience didn't give a damn about them. They enjoyed the traveling, and the singing-for-your-supper mentality (although they usually got fed by the people who were hosting the concerts in their houses). Patty was connected about doing one, but she never did. I don't think Patty is good at dealing with fans- she's probably shy, but I think she'll never get much past a handshake, a picture taken, and some small talk. That's ok, though- maybe she'll retain more of her personality. Plus, she's a bigger star than any of the other people who did LRTs (with the exception of maybe Steve), so she doesn't need the exposure, or the travel. I just don't want anyone getting too excited about the idea, because while it would be cool, I just don't see her as the type to do it. Am I the only one who feels this way?
