I think it's a testament to her songwriting that this song can be interpreted so easily by everyone to fit into our own personal experiences. It certainly fits as a goodbye to a still-living lover, friend, spouse, or any other relationship that ended, as well as a dead significant other, lover, friend, spouse, child, or whatever. Truly, the best songs are those that remind us of our own personal lives. It was something about "When that foghorn blows... something something... I wanna rock your Gypsy soul." hey john......i believe that van morrison song is tupelo honey...but i may be wrong :) smiles, kathy :o) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 May 1999 09:33:49 -0500 From: "James P" Subject: MM: van morrison The Van Morrison song that Natalie Merchant did is called, "Into the Mystic." If any of you have never heard his original, I highly suggest it. It's absolutely beautiful. I want it played at my funeral. -Cristina "I wanna rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old. And magnificently we will float Into the mystic..." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 May 1999 11:25:05 EDT From: Lbalcom24@aol.com Subject: MM: van morrison The cover song talked about is Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" from the Moondance album. If you don't own it, you should buy it. It's one of the best records ever made and is regarded as one of the most influential albums in music. Okay, that last statement is my own opinion. I see many similarities between Van and Patty. Both write music with emotion I've rarely heard in other artists. Hey everyone, after my slightly negative post about the Conan show (hey, just my opinion remember, you don't have to agree), I am encouraged to report that I caught Patty at the jersey shore last night and there were MANY people there to see her. A large crowd. I still am not really crazy about Patty's band, however, they were better than I've seen them in the past. First two songs she asked for the vocals to be turned up and absolutely needed that. Tony with the band was really great. My hubby liked Flaming Red. Little God to me was the highlight. Was anyone else from the list there and what did you think? Also, one of Lucinda's guitarists (the one that looks like Buddy Holly and has completely seduced me with his talent), had a Patty Griffin t-shirt on. I had the same t-shirt on and since I was in the 2nd row of the mosh pit, the guitarist and I had a lot of fun reacting to each other. Lucinda's band was absolutely amazing!!!! Patty sang backup on Greenville-- couldn't hear her too well. For those interested, Patty wore strapless, shiny red dress with slit, some kind of roll up stockings to her knees, a black sweater and clunky black shoes. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 May 1999 17:29:06 EDT From: "Scott Haskitt" Subject: [none] Hello, I am new on the list as of a couple days ago. Someone on the list turned me on to patty about a year ago, and I've been liking her more and more since. Anyway, just saying hi and all that. This email list is definitely a good thing! - - Scott _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. Jonny Lang is the headliner. If you like blues and haven't heard his debut CD yet, I highly recommend it. I saw somewhere on this list that Patty is opening for him, with full band. The Wiltern couldn't confirm that yet, so my fingers are crossed. If anyone gets any further news, please let me know. This will be the 3rd time I've seen her, first with the band, then acoustic opening for Lucinda. Can't wait!
