Ok guys..I'm only kidding.. Anyway, I just got back from the Annapolis show..my 2nd of 3 in 4 nights, and I want to give you all the highlights! Ok..Patty came out in a FLAMING Red silky looking dress, with a long black silky shirt over it. Her hair was looking a little extra red tonight..Lucky Me! Ok, the set list was as follows.. Flaming Red Falling Down---EXCELLENT! Poor Man's House ..that Smith's song, unsure of title Moses---Beautiful Change ---played on electric with this KILLER reverb..definitely different but cool Wayfaring Stranger One More Girl Goodbye ---this song is just SO much better live! Not Alone ---GOD I love this song! Little God Tony Go Now Mary ---more beautiful than words can say ENCORE: Sweet Lorraine Springsteen Song Dylan song I have been to see Patty many MANY times now, and I'd say this is the only night that her voice has not quite been up to it's normal standards..but still by FAR better than anyone else I've ever heard. She was really coughing in between songs..I hope she has a few nights off here soon to take care of herself. She had a very funny conversation with a guy in the audience tonight. She did her usual of asking what's new in Annapolis?? (or whatever town she happens to be in) This guy responded by saying that he is going sailing. Patty said that she had gone sailing ONCE, and it was in a BIG HEAVY boat, and there was NO wind. She said that they were towing one of those rafts, and the guy she was with had to get out and actually row the raft...so then she went into her next song..and after she finished, she looked back at that same guy and says.."hey, I just want to let you know that I didn't want to dis sailing...it's just that my experience was a bad one. I'm a Pisces, which is a water sign..so I thought I was meant for such things..but it just didn't work out for me..." It was so funny, and you should have seen her face..it was like she was really concerned that she hurt that guy's feelings by what she said, and she just HAD to let him know that she didn't mean anything BAD by it..she is just TOO sweet! When I met her in Philly on Tuesday, it was my 3rd time talking to her, and you'll all be happy to know that it was only my 1st time actually speaking in complete sentences, and making sense AT THE SAME TIME.. I can't even describe the feeling I get from standing next to her. She has changed my life to such an extent that I sometimes hold her in a higher regard than I probably should...well, maybe not..but anyway..I have never known anyone to possess such an overall beauty about their whole self Not only just Patty the musician, but Patty the person. So kind, sensitive, sweet, talented, CUTE, sincere, gentle, honest, expressive, etc..etc..etc.. PLEASE..if there are any Patty Griffin clones out there, step FORWARD because I would like you to be my wife..I'M ONLY kidding there, but I can dream can't I?? I swear I could go on tour with Patty and just listen to her sing every night for the rest of my life and not ever be bored or even have the feeling that there is something else I would rather be doing. I know you are all thinking that I'm insane, and that I'm way out of control by now, so I think I'll stop! Oh, one other point of interest. Lynn Miles opened for Patty tonight and despite ALSO being stricken with a bad cold..she did an excellent job. I have no idea how many CD's she has out but I have every intent to buy all of them in the near future! I can't believe I had never heard anything about her before. Until next time...Take care everyone.. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 23:27:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Heather Webster Subject: MM: wanna trade? Hello all. Well, I am wondering if anyone wants to trade any patty tapes? I have quite a few to trade. Also,I have a few copies of the cd single One Big Love. I have a couple that I found at a record store the other day. In particular, if anyone has recorded any of the recent shows w/ the Smiths, Dylan, Springsteen songs, that would be great. Does anyone know when she is coming back to Texas? The woman lives here, but I never get to see her play. I totally missed out on the Round Rock festival thing (crying). So, if anyone is listening, ask Ms. Griffin to head back down south so we can enjoy her musical genious down here again!!! :) Up to late. Going to bed. Delerious. Woo hoo ! Not bad for being around just a few days over one year, eh ? I looked at it 2 days in a row, and it got almost 70 hits in less than 24 hours :). I'm considering expanding it, since most of the people who fill out the survey on the site say they'd like more info on Patty. I wanna put more pictures up, but I don't wanna steal any from any other web sites. The one picture I have on the site of her is the one I took myself. So, um... anyway... it's out there :). You can use the links on the site to lemme know what you think of it... Here's a link to his restaurant in central Texas. My mouth watereth over: http://www.texasmonthly.com/food/onthemenu/hilltop.html No shrewd marketing scheme could have cooked up the Hill Top Cafe, a Greek-Cajun-Texas roadhouse 11 miles north of Fredericksburg on the Mason highway. The funky but chic eatery attracts diners from all over central Texas--folks who don=B9t mind driving a hundred miles for some of the Nicholas=B9 zingy gumbo, biting boudin, or the fancier gourmet dishes like crawfish-stuffed flounder, a specialty of new chef Sammy Holmes. Holmes, like lots of the area=B9s residents, has made the leap from the big city wher= e he was a chef at Houston=B9s trendy Cafe Annie. Many of Fredericksburg=B9s newcomers are from California (Hollywood, even), and the Hill Top is one of the first stops local realtors make with clients in tow. The restaurant=B9s disarmingly slapdash look is genuine, and not an attempt to create instant Texas nostalgia. The former gas station-beer join= t right on the highway boasts a 45-year-old AMI jukebox stocked with records at least that old, a pinball machine, game and fish trophies, and music posters attesting to owner Johnny Nicholas=B9 musical career as a member of the band Asleep at the Wheel. Fans can still catch Nicholas on Friday night= s when he plays swing and boogie-woogie on the upright tucked into the corner of the Hill Top=B9s main dining room. Ok, I'm finished now. Just to clarify dave's post, the guitar effect Patty used on "change" and quite a few other songs later in the set is commonly referred to as a "leslie" effect (or lesly, I'm unsure of the spelling). It reproduces the sound that old Leslie speakers were famous for. The Leslie cabinet was a big square box with a speaker inside mounted on a rotating platform. An electric motor rotated the speaker (like a ceiling fan upside down) so that the horn alternately pointed toward the listener and then away. It produces a sort an odd sort of "wow" sound. To get an idea of the sound, try saying the word "wah" quickly over and over again so it sounds like "wawawawawa" Say it about 8 times a second and you'll be close. Also, the Bruce Springsteen song Patty played is called Nebraska from the album of the same name. Great show. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 08:32:30 -0500 (CDT) From: Julie E Graham Subject: MM: Patty promos in Ktown? Hey gang, I can't wait! I'll see Patty for the first time in less than a week! I'll see her at the Tennesse Theater in Knoxville on the 29th. I'm wondering what her schedule is like. Does she do any radio promos, stop by cd stores, etc? I ask because there is a cd store near the theater at which she is performing that regularly has in-store performances. If she does something on the town, I don't want to miss it! Since Mike seems to be omniscient and her management is supposedly on the list, I thought I'd ask if anyone knew. Please...... I'd like to ask anyone else that's going to the show to email me. I'd love to say hi. Julie "Raised by Wolves in Alaska. Learned to yodel at the moon. Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 21:05:26 EDT From: SLClink@aol.com Subject: MM: Patty in Baton Rouge Dear fellow Mish-Moshers, I've been lurking long enough, but next Tuesday is the big night and I wanted to share my excitement. So, it's like this.... Usually I go through a phase where I play a CD non-stop. Did that at various times with LWG. Then I discovered Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" sometime last summer and played it over and over until it was engraved upon my upper palate. Then FR came out and did me like that. I started wishing out loud that Patty would play here or in New Orleans and started keeping a watch on the papers and the Web. So imagine my joy when our local venue advertises the upcoming Lucinda gig. That's pretty great for us since her songs and the last CD in particular involve a lot of local imagery and even mention Baton Rouge. Kind of like a homecoming, local gal makes good, etc. That was cool enough. Then I'm washing dishes and I hear the radio announcer do the ad for Lucinda's upcoming concert, "with special guest, Patty Griffin." Too good to be true! I nearly dropped the plate. So we're all abuzz around here and I've got my ticket pinned to the bulletin board. My only disappointment was when I thought, opening? Miss Patty should have her own concert for sure -- I'd pay $20 twice for the priviledge of a whole night's music from each of them. But I'm overeager I guess, I can't help it. I just feel incredibly lucky. The Varsity is a perfect sized club, large enough that it's an actual theater but small enough to be intimate. We'll practically be sitting in their laps. Yeehaw! Another fun thing about that place is that, because it is small, everybody has their story about seeing So-and-So perform just before they broke onto the big scene: Sheryl Crow, Better Than Ezra, all these college alternative bands that I've never heard of... So I imagine that I'll be bragging about the time I saw Patty opening for Lucinda Williams (Lucinda who?). Well, I will anyways. I remember back when I lived in Cambridge, I had the chance to go see Shawn Colvin at Passim and sit in her lap just before "Steady On" was released, and I didn't have the sense to go. What did I know? I hope to have many juicy details to report after Tuesday. What on uh-ath will ah wey-ah? Soon, girlfriends.
