I would slice my wrist open with a dirty razor to go to a "Private" concert with Patty G. ( OK, maybe not really, but I'd think about it.) I am in Chicago in the Albany Park neighborhood. We just bought a house and would consider the possibilty of a Patty Concert at home if no other place is available. ( My husband would chop me up if he knew that I wrote that down. LOL. Too bad.) Just an FYI about the Letterman show. Unless they've changed the way they distribute tickets, you can't request tickets for a particular show. Basically you call/fax/email in a request, and they send you tickets within a certain time frame. At least that's how they did it last time I was in NY. But...there is a website out there (http://www.clarkson.edu/~guildda/lsmain.html) where you could actually trade with people who had tickets they couldn't use Good Luck, ~m ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 17:06:18 -0700 From: "Mike Gorecki" Subject: MM: Letterman thanks for the infor about the Letterman Tickets...anyone know the exact date of Patty's apperance? This, my first post, was prompted by two questions. First of all, were any of you at Patty's show at the Patio in Indianapolis last winter? A friend (spirits bless her) had made tapes of both FR and LWG just before, so I was still pretty new to her music -- not to mention I had no idea what she looked like. I was a bit surprised when I finally saw her -- gorgeously vampy in a shiny silver dress and bright red wig (does she wear a wig often or was it mainly while touring for Flaming Red?). The show blew me away -- my heart broke when she played Mary, and she absolutely wailed on Every Little Bit. I was hooked. Now here I am e-mailing you guys. Here's the second reason for the post. Has Patty inspired you to try something outrageous, courageous or new? For me, it's been the guitar. I have been so amazed by her talent that I finally decided to find out if I had any of my own. I bought a guitar. Then I bought a book: Guitar for the Completely Deluded Moron Who Actually Thinks They Can Learn Guitar :-/ So far I've pretty much just severed the nerves in the fingertips of my left hand ... but I keep on keepin' on. Any advice for the musical beginner? Let me know if there are any other Hoosiers out there! Amy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 15:33:55 PDT From: "Shelley Miller" Subject: Re: MM: Inspirations Amy and all... I'm at least semi-hoosier--I live in Chicago now and spent most of my life in California, but fell in love with the midwest while down at IU (say hi to all the dogwoods for me)! In response to the other question...Patty Griffin is one of the singers I listen to and say, "dang, that's what I want to sound like some day"--not just her voice, but the emotion that comes out through it, and the way it fits so well into each song...I'm in something of an acoustic duo right now, and one of the songs we're working on covering is Poor Man's House--if I thought that my guitar playing could do it any sort of justice, we'd probably be doing Forgiveness, too...I think that Patty (and all of the other wonderful women who sing their hearts out and generally keep me sane--Carrie Newcomer, Shawn Colvin, the Indigo Girls, Rose Polenzani, Catie Curtis, Michelle Malone) reminds me of the power of music, and its intrinsic ability to heal and let me emote...ditto for her songwriting... Because of the release it seems quite logical to me that she'll perform "Blue Sky" on those shows. (but ya never know :-) Personally, I'd rather hear "You Never Get What You Want" or "Poor Man's House", but that's just me....of course she has to play something from Flaming Red :-) IMO, these TV appearances may just be the "break" her career needs to get airplay across the country and not just the regional areas she has a strong following in now. Case in point. It was after her 1995 appearance on the Conan O'Brien show that Jewel's career started to take off. So Patty appearing on Conan and the Letterman show in a span of five weeks can really make a huge difference here, perhaps more so if viewers have already heard the tune she performs, or already know of her. So, after the 20th...start callin' them thar radio stations! Also, they are "working on" some new t-shirts which *hopefully* will be available for the upcoming solo dates. They also have some of the original "baby-T's" left which will be on sale at the shows also. It was nice to see that so many of you would be willing to come up here and help out with the show. Unfortunately, it is not going to happen. After speaking to her manager a few times several weeks ago, he had told me to try for the end of April and that he'd call me back. Since I never received a call back, I had kind of lost hope and decided to post an email here to see if anyone else would be willing to help out if this thing really was to happen (since it had sounded positive so far). Well, I called her manager today and a few of my questions were answered. First, he told me that "The living room concert isn't going to happen. It was kinda weird to read about it on the internet". So this also tells us that he is reading everything we post. I find it unfortunate that he thinks we're "weird" because we actually want to see Patty play live, after all, he wouldn't be in the position he is in today if it weren't for her fans. And, I guess we can only assume that the "Pattystock" thing wouldn't happen either, as it would probably be too "weird". And to her manager himself (since I know you're reading), I told you I would be getting around 30 people together to do this. I don't really see what it matters how people find out about it. If people are willing to pay $100 to see Patty play, you should be flattered. I'm not a "weirdo", I live a normal life, and as a normal person, I don't have $3000 to spend on a concert. I didn't think it would be too "weird" to ask some other fans to help out. Sorry if I offended anyone. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 18:45:46 -0500 From: Judy Lev Subject: MM: Re: Inspirations yes. it is her real hair. it has to be her hair. she is a flaming red head. and it ain't a wig. if it's a wig, then i will be a confused child Bright red wig???? Excellent choice record executive type people (occasionally they do something right- amazing.) I remember the MM discussion last fall over choosing the right single and folks I really believe this is the one. Certainly other FR songs have their commercial potential, especially Wiggley, IMO. But for a rockin' good summer song for putting down the top and singing along, Blue Sky is it!!! Don't take it personally. I suspect the concern now that Patty is about to release a new single... hopefully "the one," is that, "what if word gets out that Patty is playing private parties." Like that might have some negative PR implications. I can just see the headlines in R&R... "Patty Griffin plays Living Room, Now Officially Small-Time." Completely ridiculous, but the kind of perception issues management tries to manipulate. Talk about "weird," - that job is weird. I think the quoting of a specific price was probably the most uncomfortable thing about the "open discussion." thanks for trying, ~ mike ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V3 #100 *********************************
