She introduced a song about her mother, Her mother's name she said was Lorrainne. The song was Sweet Lorrainne. Obviously the meaning of the song has changed for her over the years. (I do not actually know what her mother's name is.) I attempted to send this earlier but I don't think it posted because I never received it with the other MM posts. Anyway, this is a small Patty blurb that was found in a recent issue of an alternative weekly here in Nashville: Griffin In The Vektor Sector Austin's Lady in Red, Patty Griffin, signed with Ken Levitan of Vektor Management last month. Patty made just about every critic's Best Album of the Year list this past December, but it was her live performances at both the Exit/In and 3rd & Lindsley that made those in attendance aware that Patty is a firecracker of talent, about to explode nationally. Execs at PolyGram are totally supportive of her, and there is a rumor that she might move to the revamped Rounder/Mercury division as the headliner of the label. If any of you already got this earlier (I think I sent it on Monday) then I apologize for the duplication. I'm just not sure if it actually got through to the list. I hope that this contribution was informative to any of you concerned about Patty's future at her label. -Cristina ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 19:37:47 -0500 From: Peter Jones Subject: Re: MM: dar You probably already know this point, but Dar has a tune (track 8) on her second album, Mortal City, called "The Pointless Yet Poignant, Crisis of a Co-Ed". The song is about the involvement of a young lady (not Dar) who along with a boyfriend at college, ran "the Hemp Liberation League". The song is about that boyfriend and the protagonist's feelings towards canabis. Peter ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 17:34:44 PST From: "Paul Russell" Subject: MM: a JEWEL question, Not PG Sorry for posting this here, but there's been a question burning in me for like weeks now that I would really love answered. And I know there are a few Jewel fans on this list so maybe I could get some help here. There's this Jewel song that I keep hearing on the radio like at least 2 or 3 times going to work and back. I don't know the name of the song, but in it it has the following lyric (or something close to it): "These hands are small I know, but they're not yours they are my own." I always seem to punch to the song whenever she says that. And if I hear her say that more than three times, it becomes ingrained into my head, and I'm not a huge Jewel fan, so you might understand this delemna I'm experiencing. Here is my question: What is she saying? A) Is she being literal? Like was there some rumor that the hands in her video weren't hers or something? And she's replying to some rumours or something? B) Is she using symbolism? Was she criticized for like, selling out, or using other artists' styles, and she's saying "these songs sound like others, but they are mine." Everytime I hear that lyric I just picture these two construction workers talking. One says to the other, "Hey, you hear that Mack? She says those are her hands in the video, not yours." I really haven't a clue. And I thought maybe some Jewel fans could key me in. The only things I know about Jewel is that she used to be some sort of opera singer, she lived with her mother in a car, and someone gave me "Pieces of ???" which still sits in its plastic in my CD collection. Whenever I'm listening to the radio and it comes on, after the first two chords I reach for the dial and say, "yeah we know, Jewel, those hands are yours" as I'm finding another station. As this isn't in any way shape or form Patty Griffin related please email me privately!!! iceburrrg@hotmail.com I just gotta know, cuz it's driving me crazy. Thanks in Advance! To keep a Patty Griffin comment in my post (I just gotta, I'm killing myself over and over for using Ms. Griffin's list for something not related) I will ask this to everyone: Can someone please post the new tour locations and dates??? She's been everywhere. Ms. Griffin has got to come around here sooner or later. There's only so many places left in America, darn it.
