I'm hoping, for one, that I've referenced the right number in the subject line. (And if not, please tell me how this is supposed to work.) But what I'm really confused about is this facist attitude here in regards to the intollerance of freedom of experssion displayed by this group of Patty Griffin fans. I am a huge Patty fan and partially because she is able to articulate things that I may feel with her own personal style and she does so with power and occasionally with swear words. For example, some people might find the word "fag" in the song Tony equivalent to saying the "f" word. So why is it that you all can't accept one of her fans (Howard) expressing himself with his own personal style? Maybe this guys "potty mouth" is just enthusiastiasm? I mean, frankly, you are sensoring someone's freedom of expression, a fundamental right to all Americans. You might as well write to Patty and tell her to change her lyrics to what you feel is acceptable. Now pardon me if I appear to be ranting here because you could be joking with the Expletive Etiquette list but it appears that you are not. I find this whole thing rather alarming. I was hoping to find a group of like minded fans who were discussing practical details and, perhaps delving into the social meanings of Patty's songs and who she is as a person. What I've found is people bickering over bad language. Cursing is not the problem in todays society; it's poor table manners, lack of respect for the individual and intolerance of things that may appear different or hard to understand. Perhaps this "eat my poop" is just a harmless inside joke to the band in reference to....anything...who knows? But to get into a huff about it is unnecessary. And in regards to Howard, maybe he's someone who hasn't had the opportunity for education? Who knows what his story is? But never-the-less, Patty speaks to him and that is what is really important here. Let's leave this behind kids. But I thought I'd mention to y'all the *really* cool gifts that my roommate gave me. :) First was a massage from Laura Love's (way cool Seattle musician that my roomie ran into in a restaurant) massage therapist. But that's not the part that's relevant here... The other gift was Flaming Red! Of course, I've owned it since the day it came out...but this one was signed by Patty and the entire band! :) I was unable to go to her concert when she was in Seattle over the summer, but my roommates went and had a blast. They've been holding on to this CD for 6 months, waiting for my birthday to give it to me...Apparently, my roommate ran into the bass player (I think) in the beer garden...he proceeded to go around to all the individual members (who were quite widespread by that point) and get their autographs...I think Patty was already in her trailer/bus/whatever. How freaking cool is that? Just wanted to say thanks to Patty and the band, should they possibly catch sight of this post. And my roommate has already been thanked profusely for two of the coolest presents I've ever gotten. :) Thanks for reading... I don't know where you got that we were offended at that. Did I miss a post about this or something? -Cristina ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Dec 1998 20:09:52 -0500 From: "Steve Garrison" Subject: Re: MM: Re: mad-mission-digest V2 #375 Expletive Etiquette Without getting into the merits of this argument, I don't see any "censorship" issue here. No one's posts are being deleted, after all. But why shouldn't people who may be offended or upset by someone's "free expression" have an equal right to say "You know, this bothers me." It's an invitation to the "offending party" to exercise some consideration, or to ignore the request, as he/she sees fit. From that interview Ms. Griffin said there are no bands from Maine. What? What about Settie? That's a fantastic band from Maine. I've got their CD, "Bob bit the fisherman" and Settie just sings so sweetly. Especially the filler tracks on the end (I still sing those songs of hers)Come on, Pattie, don't just dis those other Maine bands. *chuckle* However on the whole (mhole, chole, fhole?) I thoroughly enjoyed that interview Cristina. thanks a bunch (munch crunch lunch funch)! on another note... Maybe I'm on another planet,(as might seem from my writing) but I thought Rachel's, Howard's, and Anthony's posts were hilarious. I'm getting a real kick out of this list, and I'm not high! take care all, I just wanted to thank yous goiys fer making my noight. peace love and vegetable rights, paul ********************************************** * If you want to sacrifice the admiration * * of many men for the criticism of one, * * go ahead, get married. * * --Katherine Hepburn * ********************************************** ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V2 #376 *********************************
