When I shared Living With Ghosts with a friend, he commented that this is what it must have felt like to discover Joni when she released her first album. And now that Patty has release her follow-up with a strikingly different sound, the parallels continue. Joni has always been an artist to challenge an audience's expectations. While many fans would have liked her to remain a folkie, Joni has branched out into Jazz, Pop, etc. While the results of Joni's eclectic nature have been mixed, the rewards have been worthwhile. Let's hope that Patty, too, continues down this path of musical exploration. By the way, I have created a website that includes a review of the Joni Mitchell concert. Please stop by http://www.angelfire.com/ga/foolishlove/ On the subject of dancing/eyes shut: I totally agree that some shows require dancing, to at least some of the songs. As I've mentioned before, one of my favorite Patty moments was when I was dancing at the Earth Day show to Wiggly Fingers. Clad in nothing but a pair of shorts, under the hot sun, with the breeze blowing off the Charles River, I jumped around like a maniac. However, I wouldn't think of listening to Foregiveness without staying really still and closing my eyes. It just depends. I went to a Susan Tedeschi show this past weekend. She's an incredible Boston Blues musician. I danced from beginning to end. If you're looking for another gal with an amazing siren-like voice, check out my review of Susan on my web pages. And lastly, I wish that people on this least would be a little more tolerant of each other. I may not be interested in every single message that I come across on this list, but everyone has the right to express themselves. (any mention of joni and i'm interested). everyone should definitely go to Dan's website and read the reviews. they are delightful. i especially enjoyed joni and shawn colvin reviews. i too, being a twenty-something, never thought that i would ever see joni or bob dylan in my lifetime. so needless to say i was already extremely excited before the concert started. i was at the show in D.C. right before they came to Atlanta, so a few people offered early birthday greetings to her. her new version of "just like this train" was the highlight for me. but, the truly amazing thing was the sense that something bigger was going on while dylan and joni were performing. i am not quite sure what it was, but, at least in D.C., there was a sense that everyone was united, more so than at other concerts i have been to. i sat there wondering if this was a taste of what it was like during the sixties, the sense of freedom and unity, not so much centered around a cause but in awareness that at bottom we are all the same. we are all connected. maybe not, but it truly was one of the greatest concerts i have been to. i also loved reading about shawn. it has been a while since i have seen her, and the last time was with the band, i really miss her solo with her guitar. and she is one of the funniest performers out there. she has this extremely dry sense of humor. (i love it)! and that line from troubled, "You don't have to drag me down/I descend." has to be one of my favorite lines as well. patty and joni and shawn have this way of writing these universal thoughts and emotions without using cliches, and also being extremely personal. their depth and passion is what draws one in so willingly. and i would venture to say their humility as well. they write what they want to write and are not trying to preach up on their pedestals. thank you dan for reminding me what it is that makes me love music. now go to his website the rest of you. grace ________________________________________________________________ Get secure free e-mail that you don't need Web access to use from Juno, the world's second largest online service. She would even have the audience yell out tunes they recognized as "fitting in." She'd incorporate them into the medley!! At another concert I attended, she and her band members were throwing out obscure movie quotes to one another on stage....she explained to the audience that she and the band members did this on the road in the bus.....she then challenged the audience to "name that quote." She bet the audience a banana that no one would guess the quote... well, sure enough, someone did. Shawn ran offstage....the band breaks into a smidgen of jamming and VOILA! Shawn reappears with a banana for the lucky winner. She's FABULOUSLY hysterical. Anyone that hasn't seen Shawn yet should do so as soon as you have the chance. - --simple boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; name="RFC822.TXT" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="RFC822.TXT" Received: from baker6.bakerbotts.com by bakerbotts.com (ccMail Link to SMTP R6.01.01) ; Wed, 18 Nov 98 12:51:21 -0600 Return-Path: Received: (smap@localhost) by baker6.bakerbotts.com (8.6.8.1/SCA-6.6) id MAA17844 for ; Wed, 18 Nov 1998 12:53:34 -0600 Return-Path: Received: from chmls06.mediaone.net(24.128.1.71) by amnesiac via smap (V2.0beta) id xma017734; Wed, 18 Nov 98 12:53:16 -0600 Received: from smoe.org (080020908e73.ne.mediaone.net [24.128.204.144]) by chmls06.mediaone.net (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id NAA29593; Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:53:10 -0500 (EST) Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) with SMTP id NAA28765; Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:51:13 -0500 (EST) Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.10); Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:51:04 -0500 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id NAA28747 for mad-mission-outgoing; Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:50:10 -0500 (EST) Received: from x13.boston.juno.com (x13.boston.juno.com [205.231.100.27]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id NAA28734 for ; Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:49:58 -0500 (EST) Received: (from gmixa@juno.com) by x13.boston.juno.com (queuemail) id DUCX27PH; Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:48:33 EST To: dschenck98@hotmail.com Cc: mad-mission@smoe.org Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 13:46:46 +0000 Subject: Re: MM: Patty, Joni & Susan Message-ID: <19981118.134647.-254981.1.gmixa@juno.com> X-Mailer: Juno 2.0.11 X-Juno-Line-Breaks: 0,3,8,11,14,17,20-22,28-29,31,33-39 X-Juno-Att: 0 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: gmixa@juno.com (Grace Halverson) Sender: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org Precedence: bulk - --simple boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 16:34:21 EST From: JohnRN24@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Patty, Joni & Susan In a message dated 98-11-18 11:53:28 EST, dschenck98@hotmail.com writes: > And lastly, I wish that people on this least would be a little more > tolerant of each other. I have never really gotten into Shawn Colvin and I am wondering right now why the heck not...she seems to be one of the kind of performers that I fall in love with. I may just have to give her a shot....just maybe. As for the " No tolerance of intolerance": I give a big hearty halleluiah, and thank the lord that there are people in this world who know their fellow man/woman and respect them. Geez, it's been like walking on eggshells having to moniter what I say here. Dan, I visited the Website, and loved it...go see it, guys. Come on, do it, come on...everybody else is doing it! In reference to the Unity that was felt at a Dylan/Mitchell show...right on. I am speaking on a whole new level here, because, like you, I am a youngin, but have felt this. I was lucky enough to have seen Jerry Garcia play while he was still alive and the same kind of weird Unity was a-brewing. Between the twelve year olds and the forty year olds, it was amazing, and really shocked me. Everybody had this mutual....respect, I guess, for everyone else. Not a person there didn't feel the music, love the music, and for that moment love every single person in that arena. It was breathtaking. Regarding Patty and Lucinda in Austin... To all the fans... In Austin, Texas we have a great radio station. 107.1 KGSR. This is the station that will be broadcasting simulcast a show on December the fourth. This show will star Lucinda Williams, Bruce Hornsby, and Most Importantly....PATTY GRIFFIN....However, I've already told you about that contcert. You can tune in to that show by accessing the KGSR home page. I'll tell you the addy for KGSR later in this post...so read on. WHY I AM POSTING TO YOU ALL: KGSR is currently running their annual music poll. They want all their listeners to access their home page and vote on their (3)favorite songs heard on KGSR for 1998, (3)favorite albums from 1998, and your (1)favorite concert of the year. SO....I think that anyone interested (That means you all HAVE to!) should access KGSR's home page and vote for a Patty Griffin song as your favorite song (you get to name two more...so they can all three be Patty related if you want, but NEED TO BE FROM FLAMING RED...seeing as how the main point of this post is to help Patty get as many votes as possible....GIVE PATTY AS MANY VOTES AS POSSIBLE) Patty's Flaming Red as your favorite album of 1998, and Patty's concert from Nov, 7th, in the Texas Union Ballroom, as your favorite concert of 1998... To do this... go to www.kgsr.com then click on "KGSR's 1998 Listener Poll" Then..fill it out with all Patty. Oh...and seeing as how you might get to win the top 107 CDs of 1998 and a new CD player...you should fill out all the information completely. If you have no interest in winning the top 107 CDs of 1998 as voted on by their listeners...if you win, I'll gladly help you relieve yourself of all those CD's.... AGAIN, YOU NEED TO BE SPECIFIC ABOUT THE PATTY CONCERT. SPECIFICALLY WRITE: patty griffin, nov 7th, Texas Union Ballroom. Cause she played earlier this year a couple of times, but this was the biggest show. If we all ban together and vote uniformly, Patty will have a good dose of recognition...and will then become that much more respected at the radio station...not that they don't respect her...they do...but, oh...just go vote for her!!!!! So...if you want to help stack deck in Patty's favor...go. Josh. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 18:38:44 -0800 From: "Victoria Chenevey" Subject: MM: Re: kgsr anniversary ticket info - npr fyi- Bruce Hornsby has a new cd out. In other words OBSESS about Patty..just kidding...MAYBE..I want to hear everyones thoughts, opinions, feelings, and experiences of her, as well as other new artists that they think I may like. If the subject line does not interest me, I sometimes delete those posts. If I read it and the mail still did not interest me..I delete it. What's the big deal?? The good that we get out of this list in my opinion by far out weighs the bad. I've met many MANY great people from this list..you ALL know who you are, and for that I'm eternally grateful. Not to mention the 1 Patty show I found out about that I would have never known about before. With those 2 things considered..the good I've gotten out of this list, in my opinion, by far out weighs the bad. The only posts that I find "annoying" are those of 1 person telling a person that they're stupid for posting certain things on this list, just because that person does not find it appropriate. If you want or like controversy, ..the Jerry Springer show is on every day, trust me, you will get your fill of anger and emotion from watching that. I don't want to offend anyone, I just hate to see people arguing and hurthing others feelings over things that are not even worth worrying about. We all have at least one interest in common, and THAT interest just happens to be quite possibly the greatest woman to ever grace this earth. So..let's just keep the chat polite, and keep things fun for everyone involved. One of the few things that I would or could talk about almost all day, every day, is my Love of Patty Griffin. If the people who post negative e-mails to others have found certain posts annoying, either get off this list, or simply delete those e-mails and forget about it. It's not worth hurting someone over, or trying to make someone look stupid over. You are the one that looks bad, because most of us want to hear anything concerning Patty G. Whether it's a story of someone meeting her, or if it's just "senseless" talk about what you do, and how you feel when she sings a song. Ok guys..I'm sorry for making this so long, it's been a very bad day for me, and I just came home, and there was all this fighing. I couldn't stand it ANYMORE! I had to express my feelings. The day would have been a total DISASTER had it not been for Dana (MM member) sending me that Beautiful Patty poster! Dana, thanks SO much for making my day!! I'm in such a good mood suddenly!
