If not, take 23 south to 475 West off on Corey Rd. exit and right on Monroe...Media Play on the right a few miles down. They will definitely have it. Oddly enough, I didn't like her then. I was very impressed by "crazy", but I think I was to keyed up about seing Jewel for the first time to listen. Anyway, I went to another Jewel show about a month later, when Eleanor McEvoy opened for her. I later went out and bought both CDs- not because I really liked either of them, but because I wanted the nostalgia of the Jewel songs. when I first listened to Patty's CD, my God, I was amazed The rest is pretty much history :). I've seen her 6 or 7 times now, and I love it every time :). Gives it three stars, but the review itself seems more like a four star review. Me, I give it five. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 16:53:01 EDT From: RbSayre@aol.com Subject: MM: Entertainment Weekly gives Flaming Red an A- finally, they do something right. the review, word for word, transcribed without permission, for your reading pleasure: The singer-songwriter comes out screaming here, which may ruffle the skirts of those moved by her folkish debut. But Griffin isn't just another mutable member of the post Lilith archetyping pool. Stakes are high in her scarred narratives, which emote with a muscular empathy; even her wistfulness seems road-toughened. The rock-chickisms are occasionally overdone, but her pop sense and chutzpah almost always win out. A few of my friends constantly played Living With Ghosts, but some of them didn't even know who the singer was, they just had dubbed a copy. Anyway, I finally found out who it was I had been listening to every night before bed for a couple hours, and bought the CD. It's an AWESOME CD. Also I was playing it for a friend at home and she goes, How do you know Patty Griffin, almost insulted as if she owned the CD, because earlier she had mentioned Patty Griffin (the year befroe) and I had NO idea who it was. Now we're all trying to get to a Patty concert some time this summer. Thanks! I see this happening.>> LOL!! You know, I think that stupid Alan Jackson song "Mercury" is a perfect example of that. hehehe Mimi Alidor Austin, TX Mimi- Believe it or not that "Mercury" song is older than Alan Jackson himself. It's a cover that he did on one of his records and he of course modified it a bit for the Ford truck commercial. Steve Miller Band also covered that tune back in the seventies. I didn't realize until today that River was about River Phoenix. They bring back the concert at Somerville where she sang a couple of these songs with him so beautifully. Patty can blast it out when she wants, but she is such a wonderful balladeer when every word and intonation is counted. I am looking forward to the several songs I still haven't heard on the new album, like Peter Pan. Tuesday! Patty had been opening up for them on the tail end of their tour promoting "River Songs." i happened to see the very last show of that tour at a very small venue in Atlanta. i had never heard of Patty, but the guys from the badlees couldn't say enough about her. in fact, i had never seen all of them listen so intently to someone opening up for them. it was like they were in a trance(she even had their sound guy under her spell.) i was probably too selfishly excited to see them for me to REALLY hear Patty. i did take note that there was something stunning about her presence and she had/has an incredible voice. i was equally impressed when the badlees invited Patty to join them for a song. soon after that show i bought Living With Ghosts because i knew i was going to be seeing Patty again soon, opening for Shawn Colvin this time. there is no doubt in my mind, LWG will be one of my all time favorites. the power and passion in her voice just floors me. Flaming Red's title track, which also happens to be the 1st song on the new album, is a little startling at first, but i quickly got over it. i absolutely love the new album and i can't wait to see Patty and Edwin in Atlanta in August. tracey p.s. - i love hearing about how everyone has discovered Patty. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 00:50:42 EDT From: Huricane74@aol.com Subject: MM: Live Patty recordings This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --part0_898404642_boundary Content-ID: <0_898404642@inet_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII - --part0_898404642_boundary Content-ID: <0_898404642@inet_out.mail.aol.com.2> Content-type: message/rfc822 Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Content-disposition: inline From: Huricane74@aol.com Return-path: To: madmission@smoe.org Subject: Live Patty recordings Date: Sun, 21 Jun 1998 00:47:58 EDT Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Hello to everyone!!!!, I'm writing here to ask anyone that is willing to help me for their help with 2 little problems.
