I just unsubscribed from this list because I can't believe what started out as such a wonderful avenue to share information and thoughts about a fabulously talented artist as Patty Griffin, has turned out to be so ugly. I went back to the list archives just for the heck of it and looked at posting's when the list first started. It was fun and informative and everyone was so excited about the new list. We discussed lyrics and traded tabs and updated eachother on what was going on around the country regarding Patty. That is what I thought this mailing list was for. It's not. It's for people that just want to chat and argue about irrelevant things. Nothing to do with the artist herself. Maybe some of you should look back on those archives too and you'll see what I mean. I think Mike had the right idea about this not being a Chat room. I agree with him. I also agree that it's probably better just to get the newsletter. I'm sure I will get flamed for this but since I won't know, it won't matter. It can give you all a little more to fight about. As far as the comment about "you can tell people that have never been on mailing lists before", well if this is what it's about, you can have it! I will always be a big fan of Patty Griffin's, but I will just have to find another way to communicate with other fans of hers. So take an objective look at your own posts and come up with a definition. Perhaps you might consider subscribing to the "news only" version of this list, as apparently, this one is not to your liking. Mark Nashville, TN >>> "Mike Gorecki" 05/21/98 05:28pm >>> Here is the deal...this isn't a chat room but I will say that if I want info or discussion about other artists I am inclined to use that artist's site..if they don't have one....well there are general music discussion chat sites all over the web.....I check this site for info about Patty because uh...well like I said......But confrontation is easy from a keyboard.....and of course we all can do just whatever we want..but....and correct me if I am wrong...this is a Patty Griffin site so argue away but some things just sort of define themselves......you can say black is blue...but hey it don't make it so...and besides..I just simply don't want to wade through all the stuff that is totally irrelevant to the Patty Griffin site...sort of like this way to lengthy note...nuff said Mike goreckime@cbpu.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 08:44:46 -0700 From: Elaine Bean Subject: MM: You roomate is a jerk:are you too? Could you please tell your roomate to mind his/her own business and I'm truly sorry that he or she is displeased with the content of this list, but would it be possile for him/her to be a jerk somewhere else? He/she is truly a boorish and rude cretin. And aren't you a little displeased that this person is violating your privacy by reading your mail? Elaine ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 12:22:05 -0400 (EDT) From: CONNELL@taurus.cs.lmco.com Subject: MM: From the list owner - all please read :-) Good afternoon folks, Mike/list owner here (the man of many email addies) I have to make this quick, as I am at work and can't spend too much time on this situation right now. This may be controversial, especially with the "free speech" advocates that may be on this list, but at the moment I really don't give a rats' patootie. (besides, free speech does not apply here) I just wanted you all to know that at about 9:00am ET I put this list TEMPORARILY in moderated mode, meaning for the time being all posts bounce to my home addy for approval. The LATEST this will last until is some time Monday. It may end sooner. What I have decided to do is to give everyone basically a good ol' fashioned 3-day holiday weekend from this list of late. (To the non-USA folks, this is the first holiday weekend of NEW summer season!!! :-) So, until sometime Monday the only posts I'll let thru are "Patty content" posts. I am NOT saying that this list should be a "Patty content" ONLY list. That was not my intent when I asked Jeff Wasilko to let me have this list here at smoe.org, and it is NOT my intent now. What IS my intent is to just let everything cool down, stop the 'fighting', everyone have a nice weekend, and Monday night I'll unlock the doors and we'll be open for business as usual again. (Smoe MAY be down for a bit anyway this weekend, as the NEW smoe is supposed to arrive today, and Jeff will be doing the upgrade this weekend.....more on that tonight or tomorrow as I get info and post to all the lists on smoe.org) Back to the Patty content/non-Patty content topic: To some degree, non-topical (non-Patty) talk can and IS the lifeblood of many lists. It IS what made the Jewel list so amazingly close for a spell, when it was just three times as large as this one. Non-topical posts build friendships and list character, with a common bond of being fans of Patty Griffn. Of course, with non-topical posting comes some sort of limitation, there has to be. Normally a list can self-regulate itself, and I've let this one go 5 and a half months untouched. When the self regulation isn't working, or if the situation gets out of hand (as this one seems to have) the list owner should step in. In my opinion, this (non-topical posting) is *partially* what this list is about....along WITH sharing the love of Patty's music, talking about it (positive or negative), and all the while perhaps learning more about each other, perhaps developing an online (offlist) friendship, perhaps meeting up at shows. Perhaps not. I've met nearly 400 people from the Jewel list over the past two years, and have some degree of an online friendship with a majority of them, and with probably nearly 200 or so I haven't met. It's fun meeting folks you've met on artists lists, in my opinion. It's all fueled by non-topical posts, to a certain extent. If that is NOT your cup of tea, (non-topical posts or getting to know others) well....then that is what the delete button is for, the digest version is at times for, and partially, what the news version is for. This is just my opinion, but if you don't at least have the time to wade thru and delete emails based on the subject, or a sentance or two of reading a post, well....then the content of this list may not be the real problem. (although I WILL grant you all that the complaint posts, and the complaints about complainers or comments about complainers has been a bit overdone lately, which of course is the #1 reason this list is now moderated for the next 72 hours or so) There are nearly 240 people on the loose mail and digest versions of this list. (it was 300 two weeks ago) Each of us has something in mind as to what we want out of it, but NONE of us can or will have it just "our way"....it can't happen....we can't please everyone. So, what do we do? We ALL bend. ALL! Not too far, just enough to be content with the list. That's the goal as far as I'm concerned, for 240+ to be *at least* content with the list. Not too many can or will be *happy* with it at all times. So don't try to be. Well, I'm off to get back to work. I intend to write again tonight on list "Netiquette". Way too many posts have been lacking in netiquette, and I'm mostly referring to the habit of quoting *entire* previous posts, which has to stop. (There's more than meets the eye when someone quotes an entire post from someone else, especially a long one) Also, there's been posts sent to the list that really should be sent private. This one hasn't been too bad, but with the recent "fighting", I've seen more cases lately. I'll address that too. Mike - list owner :-) P.S. If you wish to reply to tell me to stick it, or to send me an atta-boy, or to say "Get me the hell off of this list!" (been getting a few of them a day), please CC any reply to my home address of ducksoup@spectra.net as I may not be back here until Tuesday. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 May 1998 14:53:32 -0700 From: "Mike Gorecki" Subject: MM: Patty Griffin Ok...well the truth of the matter is that no matter what we say the wonderful gift of music that Patty has given to those who seek it has been a welcome relief to the, how many ways can you say I hate life, music that has been bombarding the 90's..It is sweet and sensitive with just enough personal feelings to keep listeners connected to each of her remarkable songs. It seems like the emotional parallels to my own life are what keep me a continuous and forever faithful fan. Too loud...Bad mix.. all those real life problems pale in comparison to the essence of her wonderful words and observations. I will forever be a fan for what I have already gotten from her music. I have said it before and here I say it again...She saved my life..nothing before her words could have kept me from despair. always in her debt mike ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V2 #142 *********************************
