I'm in total agreement with this choice: >Allison Krauss - So Long, So Wrong (gives PG a run for her money vocally IMO) For those people who haven't heard of her, she has six or seven albums out, has won quite a few Grammys (in both bluegrass and country, I believe), and all that at the ripe old age of 26. Her greatest hits album is terrific, with a special nod toward "Now That I Found You." And as the person who introduced me to her music put it, "she has the voice of an angel." When he first said it, I thought he was bullshitting me - he wasn't. Don't get me wrong, I love Patty, and she's got Alison beat on both lyrics and pure, raw emotion, but Alison's voice is phenomenal. Those two, along with Sarah McLachlan, are in my triumverate of favorite artists. And they would all be in my CD player if a) I had a CD player at home and b) I had all my CDs. As they say, patience is a virtue (a saying I'm repeating to myself as I await Patty's decision to come to San Francisco). And now, the rambling shall cease... Howdy! I've got to add my bit to the Alison Krauss discussion. Marc has pretty much nailed it. She absolutely has the voice of an angel-I've been using that phrase for years. It is pure, crystalline, achingly gorgeous-it just goes right through you. The only caveat I would offer those unfamiliar with her is that her musical style is light years from Patty's. Alison is a bluegrass goddess, and an award-winning fiddler, too. Her discs can be found in the Bluegrass, Folk, and Country sections of record stores, depending on where you shop. She doesn't write any of her own stuff, but she is a flawless interpreter with excellent taste. Aside from classic and modern bluegrass cuts, she has covered songs by the Beatles, Bad Company, and The Foundations. The band is excellent, and Alison remains, despite the fame and accolades that cascade upon her 26-year-old head, humble, gracious, and sweet. Do yourself a favor and check out this absolute gem. Finally, I would add to Marc's triumvirate one more name-Dar Williams. She is to me the brightest star in the Sarah-Patty-Alison-Dar quartet of genius. And help keep it going by giving your spare change to your local public radio affiliate where you hear it. Mary, I e-mail the program often. They're good at replying. Hi, I hope ppl continue to share names of new artists with the list. I love making new discoveries, and in all liklihood probably would not have listened to a particular artist without a recommendation. I don't think one should limit themselves to posting ONLY about PG - and *I* certainly don't intend to! - there are many relevant and interesting things going on in addition to PG news. For those who are perturbed that conversations sometimes revolve around "non-Patty" stuff, might I suggest subscribing to the "News Only" list that Mike has been talking about and just set up? I've seen it happen with John Hiatt, Bruce Cockburn and most recently with Townes Van Zandt. Personally, I like discussions about other artists, because that's a great way for me to hear about music I may like and wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. But everyone is entitled to their opinion. I would suggest that we adopt the policy of the other groups I mentioned, which is to include the phrase "no PG content" in the header. That way, Mike (and anyone else who cares to) can simply delete that post. But damn, I wish we didn't have to do that. I hate rules. You know, if I wasn't on the Jewel list I would have never learned about Patty. I'm grateful for the posts about other artists and happenings. Besides- 99% of the posts on this list about other artists have the other artist's name in their subject. Hasta luego, Lollapallooza. Furthur? Schmurthur! If singer- songwriter Ani DiFranco has any say in the matter, the summer tour on everyone’s must-see list for 1998 will be ... George. Don’t be looking for a Clooney, a Clinton, a Jones or a Jetson. This “George” is Ani’s own name for her upcoming 18-city megamonster ampitheater tour, winding its way from the New York island back to California, up the West Coast, and ending up criss-crossing Canada this June and July. Why George? No one knows but the inscrutable folksinger, and she’s not telling. George will be swinging through a jungle of 3-10,000-seat venues, including Battery Park (at the foot of Manhattan), Wolf Trap (not too far from Washington, DC), Great Woods (fairly close to Boston), and Red Rocks (within shouting distance of Boulder, CO). Joining Ani in Team George are longtime drummer Andy Stochansky, medium-time bassist Jason Mercer, and still-kinda-new keyboard player/background vocalist Julie Wolf. As an opening act, Ani has chosen New Orleans’ ReBirth Brass Band, whose irresistably dancable mix of jazz and funk suggests an approach to life best summed up in the title of their Shanachie Records release, We Come to Party. Good thing, too, since we hear George is gonna be quite the party animal. STILL CURIOUS? GEORGE WILL BE TOUCHING DOWN IN...
