One, this present tour is just a small "get the feet wet" with the new band kind of thingy. They need to work out the kinks. The only show we hadn't uncovered was the one tonight in Cleveland, which appears to be a private show, much like Tuesday's show in Minnie Minn. (or did someone previously post about a Cleveland show???...I mean I seem to vaguely remember a post last week...before Kerry's review of the Hamilton show mentioned Cleveland) After this tour ends in Dallas, it looks like hiatus/practice term until a quite likely July tour....they are looking to latch on as an opener for someone else. So far just the 3 August Lilith gigs are planned, unless the Lilith folks call and ask for more. (They will, if they know what's good for them ;-) Having caught wind of some of the recent pro & con list chatter about Flaming Red and its' sound, Mike wanted to remind everyone that Living With Ghosts was a demo CD, that wasn't planned for release anyway, and while the acoustic sound IS something Patty is known for and also fond of, it's not necessarily where she wants to be, and this new CD is truly representative of what she wants to do with her career at this point. Go Patty!! :-) Tour info as I know it: 5/12 Tue - Minneapolis MN - Bunkers - CHANGED VENUE (was at the Fine Line Music Cafe - PRIVATE PARTY -- INVITATION ONLY!!) 761 North Washington Ave 612-338-8188 5/15 Fri - New York NY - Mercury Lounge 10:15pm $12.00 217 East Houston St. 212-260-4700 5/18 Mon - Los Angeles CA - The Troubadour 9081 Santa Monica Boulevard 310-276-1158 box office 310-276-6168 info line 5/20 Wed - Dallas TX - The Dark Room (inside the Green Room) 2715 Elm |214-748-7666 (NOTE!! The A&M Records site NOW lists the venue as The Gypsy Tea Room (214) 744-9779, I haven't confirmed it) LILITH FAIR DATES 8/23 - Denver CO - Fiddlers Green Amphitheater - on sale May 23rd 8/25 - Salt Lake City UT - Wolf Mountain - on sale May 23rd 8/26 - Boise ID - The Idaho Center - on sale May 23rd I finally found something I wanted to share with y'all that was buried under a mound in my den. (If you saw this mess, you'd understand...then again, maybe you wouldn't ;-) Anyway, I too was a lucky one who received an advance copy of Flaming Red. Included was a cover letter (below) from the A&M Records CEO, Al Cafaro. While I am not at all certain that cover letters accompany ALL advance/promo CDs from a record company, logic tells me that not many could possibly contain a glowing cover letter such as this one.Sure, they'll talk it up to a degree, but this letter kinda excited me and made me toss it in my CD player that much quicker. For the record (pun intended), I LOVE Flaming Red :-) Mike :-) P.S. My CD player is broke, and I ain't heard it in 3 weeks :-( The cover letter: Dear Friend: We have great expectations for all the artists at A&M, and anticipation for their every release, but every now and then a record is made that surpasses our dreams, and presents us with the staggering responsibility of dealing with greatness. Patty Griffin has made such a record. I'm happy and proud for you to hear Patty's "Flaming Red". I hope you enjoy it. OK, now, put on your dreaming caps... ...even though this may not seem practical, as we have like no input as to patty's touring schedule (only her management/booking/record label does...), here is my question: who would YOU like to see Patty tour with?!? I personally would like to see Patty tour with ELlis Paul (oh, like that's a surprise coming from me...) or CATIE CURTIS (I AM A HUGE CATIE FAN...) or i could see her on a bill with Keb Mo and Bonnie Raitt... that's all for now stephanie Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos We should be very greatful to have a kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu limited body...like mine or like The Greek Poet Chyck yours. Well, I gots a tape from a smidgen over a year ago and Patty mentions how she'd LOVE to duet with Annie Lennox. That intrigued me to no end, so I'd have to go with that...Annie Lennox. (Yeah, they'd be separate acts, but I'm certain they'd duet a tune or two per show) She also mentioned Aretha Franklin, but said she'd be so tongue tied if she ever met Aretha that she'd make a bumbling fool of herself :-) Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 14:38:47 -0400 (EDT) From: Elizabeth Rose Subject: Re: MM: Patty-related content... If I had removable limbs, I'd do the same, but if I had removable limbs, I'd probably remove them just for the fun of it. =) I'd personally want to see Patty and Shawn Colvin together again-- Lindsey and I first heard Patty when she opened for Shawn Colvin last spring. Sigh... we only wish we'd payed more attention that time. But the pessimistic law of opening acts (hire a bad one so that the main act sounds better) certainly worked: In comparison to the other opening act Shawn had, Patty was soooo good that we had to get _Living With Ghosts_. Hmmm... how about Patty and Suzanne Vega? Just to see how they'd warp eachothers' styles.... --Anna (of the Anna and Lindsey conglomerate) P.S. -- UFOs are real (the air force doesn't exist) =) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 00:16:27 -0500 From: Dana Subject: MM: Dream concert Yes- My dream concert would have to be Patty opening for Jackson Browne like Shawn Colvin did in 1996. I would have to catch them at as many concerts on the tour as I could! How about Patty at Sedona with her new band also? No one on this list knows about that I guess- well, maybe a few!
