Patty is one of a few artists that I've been anxious to see this year... * Patty was mentioned by Shawn Colvin in last weekend's L.A. Times Calendar section interview w/Shawn, Paula Cole, and Erykah Badu. Here's the excerpt: Q: What new music have you been listening to? Are there any artists out there right now who you think aren't getting the attention they deserve?... Colvin: On my last tour, I listened to Paula and Sheryl [Crow]. Lately, I like Steve Earle, and this woman Patty Griffin, who I took on tour... * For anyone who has a webpage for Patty (or for anyone who is interested) here is what I've come up with for her discography: "Legacy II: A Collection of Singer Songwriters" (Hight Street Records) Cat. 72902 10314-2 "I Write the Book" Patty Griffin - "Living With Ghosts" (A&M) Cat. 31454-0490-2 V/A - "Million Dollar Sound Sampler" (A&M) Cat. 00292 "Let Him Fly" V/A - "A&M Monthly Sampler: May" (A&M) Cat. 00193 "Every Little Bit" & "Poor Man's House" V/A - "Tips on FM Alignment" (A&M) Cat. 00441 "Let Him Fly" V/A - "Multiball" (A&M) Cat. 00523 "Let Him Fly" I have several copies of Legacy II for anyone who doesn't have it. I'm not selling them. I'll give them away for those who are interested and are in dire need of them. I have no extra copies of the others right now but I'll get more soon... Some of the MM'ers were bringing a red rose to recognize each other and then give the bundle to Patty after the show...how 'bout you austinites? I'll be there with my family---and a red rose. Hope to meet some of you at the show! Jessie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 10:38:34 -0700 From: Heidi Subject: MM: SoCal Dates? Does anyone know if Patty's gonna be in or around southern California this summer? Maybe Lilith? She wasn't on the SoCAL leg of the Lilith tour last year and I noticed that she does have any west coast tour dates scheduled. I want to see her play!! Doesn't she like the West Coast? ;-)) Thanks, Heidi ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 14:41:44 EST From: Wunnder@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: cgange on forgivness tab >>hey all, i was informed by a nice, cool, guy that to play it correctly, play it at capo 5... :) have fun! kate<< not meaning to split hairs here, but i actually asked patty at the fez last week how to play it and she said it was capoed on 4, in standard tuning...or as she put it, "what white people in the nineties call regular tuning." but i guess it really doesn't make *that* much of a difference unless you're playing with the cd. BTW, this month's ICE Magazine has a lot of Patty info, and includes a list of Patty's tracks on upcoming soundtracks and other releases. I'll post it later tonight or tomorrow, as I left it at home. I first heard about Patty Griffin in the summer of 1996, when I got a copy of a mail order anthology cd called Leak (or something like that). I moved to Austin Texas from New yor City later that year and got to hear her blow everyone away at a KGSR Christmas show. I'm curious to know if there is an archive of old posts. I'm paticularly interested in reading any comments on the latest tour. Thanks Rob Hall ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 20:09:44 -0400 (EDT) From: kartalst@HUGSE1.HARVARD.EDU Subject: MM: *some* Patty-Content: harmonies... This is not all that relevent, but i found it interesting... For those of you who were at the Somerville Theatre, or who are Ellis Paul fans, I am sure you noticed how beautiful Ellis and Patty sounded together. The funny thing, if Patty were to take the melody and Ellis the harmony, I don't know if it would sound as beautiful as it did...and I don't know how it would sound to hear Ellis and Patty singing a Patty song together... I was thinking about this today... and it got me thinking about a greater picture... ...about similar trends with other singers. Natalie Merchant had Katell Keinig sing background vocals on her solo debut, _Tigerlilly_. I am also a HUGE HUGE HUGE Katell fan. And the funny thing is, I couldn't imagine Katell taking melody and Natalie taking harmony...or Natalie backing up any of Katell's songs, especially those on the _O Seasons O Castles_ album (one which is in constant rotation on my CD player...) ...and I can picture Paula Cole backing up any Sarah McLachlan song, but I am not too sure how Sarah backing up any Patty songs would sound... ...any thoughts on this? take care, y'all yay mad mission! i love you all stephanie Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos We should be very greatful to have a kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu limited body...like mine or like The Greek Poet Chyck yours. Thank you so much for the directions...I don't think I ever would have found the theater without them...wicked confusing to get there, huh? Sorry I haven't thanked you sooner, but I've been extremely busy with work and school, and I didn't check my e-mail until right before I left on the day of the show...I know, excuses, excuses. As for the show, what did you think? I thought Patty was very real and emotional; however, even after they lowered the amp on her guitar, I still thought it was way overpowering. Her voice is so strong, and she pounds the guitar with such emphasis, I don't think they needed that type of volume in such a small theater. I hate to say it, but I was kind of glad when it was over. Don't get me wrong, I love her and her music, but I'm not sure what to think of the overall performance. And no, I'm not putting her down, I guess I just have mixed emotions about the whole thing...but yes, I will definitely go see her again. As for Ellis Paul...I thought he was really good. Not knowing his music or what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised by his performance. I felt a connection to him...it was like he was making eye contact with me during his whole set. Know of any websites for him? Okay, who is the girl that kept yelling "hey Ellis"? Is she on this list? And who is the girl that gave Patty the red rose? Anyone know? Sorry if this has been asked already, but I've been out of the loop all week! Where did everyone go after the show? We ended up at this Irish pub called The Burren, or something like that, across the street from the theater. Anybody ever been there? Still a Patty Fan, Shawna ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V2 #52 ********************************
