Jessa the complicated angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Feb 1998 23:40:40 -0800 From: "David Lee" Subject: MM: some patty content. (my second attempt to send this, apologies if it's a repeat...) Hi, this is in response to Stephanie's post concerning the new Jules Shear's cd of duets. I happened to be listening to both Paula Cole's and Patty Griffin's songs last night on a tape that I recorded off the World Cafe radio show a few weeks ago (remarkable show by the way!) The Paula Cole song is called "Last in Love", Paula does not sing backup, it is a slow heartbreak duet with Jules accompanied with acoustic guitar and piano, with trumpet (I think it is) occasionally in the background. A really beautiful song, it's so cool to hear the dynamics of their respective talents together. "Windows & Walls" is the Patty song. It does take awhile for Patty to appear in the song, Jules opens and Patty comes in 1 minute and 36 seconds later (I know, I timed it!). The song features acoustic guitar, piano, occasional trumpet and the USC marching band (just kidding!). A very powerful song, Patty dominates in the middle part of the song and makes it hers. Differing from the Paula song, Patty and Jules trade off harmonies back and forth, than back together again (very cool!). For those who may think that Patty's new cd might be compromised by additional instruments, made less powerful, I think this song shows that both can compliment each other. In fact, if arranged correctly, one may not notice the background instruments at all. I like to think that an exceptional artist makes the song, not the song making the artist. Anyway, the song is about a love gone bad (don't all mine?) and how expensive homes and possessions can't pay the price that love asks (except in the New Orleans red light district during Mardi Gras ha,ha). Here are some of the lyrics: "Windows & Walls" by Jules Shears? Can't keep a love in with windows and walls, Even twelve rooms connected by marbled floored halls, . . Played in any other language, It's an old loser's game... . . One wants to go, one tries to stall, Can't keep a love in with windows and walls, In the hour of the day, you walk the floor, where the battle will be fought. You may not learn the lessons, but the lesson will be taught! The sun will still comfort you(?) when you speak, but the words will tell, the breaking up of our spell. You use to want everything, now you want peace, If it can't be with him, than within you at least, If anyone else has heard the song, I'd like to know what the song meant to them. And those wondering how Jules sounds, he sounds a little like Duncan Sheik, but with a slightly deeper voice. For those wondering if the songs are good, I think they are, for me it's just strange hearing new songs by Paula and Patty that I'm not use to plus they are kind of in a new environment singing soft ballads not written by them in a duet. Most of you know that Paula's and Patty's songs have an edge on them, these songs may have a more gentler and softer feel to them, more melancholy (oops, is that spelled right?) If you go buy and listen to this cd you'll know what I mean. . Anyway, if the rest of the cd is anything like these two songs I'd give it two thumbs up ;-> From the poor man's house, David - ---------- > From: kartalst@HUGSE1.HARVARD.EDU > To: mad-mission@smoe.org > Subject: MM: some patty content. > Date: Thursday, February 05, 1998 3:58 PM > > cut...cut...cut > > Mary Ramsey will be heard singing and playing on Jules > Shear's new CD, Between Us.
