Lou writes- :I think this is a very interesting question. My guess is that she means :homosexual. :But in the song I think it works BECAUSE he is her best friend. Although, :I'm not gay I don't find it offensive. Others? Ooh, finally something I know about! Speaking as someone who IS gay, I agree with Lou's statement above. I know several gay folks who refer to themselves & others as queer & some folks (including me!) who prefer to call themselves queer. I think the reason for the term has to do with the fact that words like "homosexual" or "gay" are so... definite? It's like gay & straight are used as black & white. As I'm sure ya'll know, life is anything but black & white- there's a whole rainbow of colors & a whole lot of gray! To say simply that I am gay means that I'm shut off from any sort of change... I can't explain it, but I think that it was actually said really well in the film Chasing Amy- the scene where Alyssa explains to Holden that she feels right being with him because she got there on her own terms. She knows that there weren't any possibilities that she disregarded or overlooked by saying she was JUST straight or JUST a lesbian. . . this is kinda hard to articulate with the NyQuil working & I'm sure it's a longer, rambly explanation than ANYONE wanted to hear, but the long & short of it is that I think that if she is referring to a friend who's gay, I don't find it to be offensive. More on the subject of Moses, I think that it's possibly my favorite song of Patty's because of the lines: every time i see him he smiles & he tells me how well he's walking his miles, but he never ever asks a single thing about me, if i died he'd hear about it eventually... I discovered Patty's music and Moses at a time when this line was especially pertinent to me, so it's a really important tune for me! :) that's it & i apologize for giving what seems like a thesis on fluid sexuality or something!!! :-) peace, rick keeper of random thoughts & delirium, "gay tripper", buffy addict creator of strange web pages: http://members.aol.com/rbsayre/rick.html struggling whatever, pop culture junkie, michelle malone fan. *i should come with a warning* -soul miner's daughter ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 01:58:09 EST From: Shel1018 Subject: Re: MM: A question about the lyrics to Moses... Responding to Kerry's post... I've always taken the "queer" line to be about a gay man who happens to be the narrator's friend. As a lesbian, I've never really thought it was derogatory (I could delve into my dislike of the word queer in general, but its more the political connotations that bug me, which has nothing really to do with this song, and in the context of this song, its never bothered me at all). I took the song as pretty much a narration of this woman's life, how she's lonely and kind of at the end of her rope, and here's her best friend, who's gay, and he can understand her on some level, but at the same time he's got his own life, and so she's at the empty bar, in the empty room, etc. doing a solo ironing job on a love life that's indelibly wrinkled. I hadn't thought of it that way and you are SO right! And, personally, I think everyone should see that movie. Great, great flick. A quick question about the Sweet Lorraine tabs while I'm at it (for Jenna or anyone else who has been playing it). Maybe it's just me but I find the Cadd9 sounds somehow wrong. I can't find another chord to replace it (and maybe I'm just playing it wrong!) but it doesn't sound right to me. Has anyone found another chord that sounds better there? Yes it is probably a delicate subject, but I do believe she means "homosexual" only out of fondness. I don't think she means anything derogatory. Although she does point him out to be a bit narcissistic. From what I've read , the people and subject matter that she writes about is biographical albeit not always auto- biographical, so she could know someone that is "gay" and, who knows, maybe she calls him that and he doesn't have a problem with it. Remember, when an artist writes, they should have the freedom to express whatever they feel or they wouldn't be expressing themselves and we wouldn't get to enjoy there wonderful music. Anyhow, those are just my thoughts, please pass them on if you would. Thanks and have a great night! When she sings the verse about the narcissist, it's right after she comments about her best friend being a queer. (she kind of segways into it).
