I had been so keyed up about seeing Jewel that I barely ayed any attention to Patty- but I remember her doing "Crazy" and thinking it was amazing. I went out and bought the album about a month later, and fell in love. I've seen her a few times since then, and she just keeps getting better :). I'll be seeing her in Northampton, and I'm trying to work a way to get my butt out to Boston... but it's kind of funny to be going to a theatre to see her, 'cause one of the last times I saw her, she was playing in a barn :). Oh well. As for personal stuff, I'm 19, and I live in Massachusetts, and I go to college, and I hope to some day be the queen. Heh. I'm Laurel from the Boston area...I first heard of Patty when a friend saw her open for Martin Sexton at his CD release party. I'm a college administrator, and she actually played on my campus, opening for Dog's Eye View, so I went to see her, and was hooked! I've seen numerous "opening" shows of hers (Shelly - I saw the Shawn/Freedy tour as well, but in Boston - - it was great!), and two solo shows - One at the New Moon Coffeehouse in Haverhill, MA and one in the Little Red Barn in CT - they were both fantastic!!! I'm dying to for the new CD to come out - hoping that "We are Water" and "Wriggly Fingers" are included.... I won't make it to the Northampton show, but am thinking about the one in Somerville....hope to see lots of you there! - - Laurel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 13:01:16 -0400 (EDT) From: kartalst@HUGSE1.HARVARD.EDU Subject: MM: introduction Hello my fellow Patty lovers!!! Since we are doing the introduction thing, I figure I should just jump right in the circle and let you know all about me. I could sit here and say all sorts of things about myself, like where I was raised, how old I am, stuff like that. But, well, I guess the necessarily conventional really is not my style. I will tell you this, though. I have recently realized that I am truly a happy person in life. I have been blessed with strength, an "always thinking" mind, and a rather compassionate and empathic soul. I feel blessed by my Muse, who always guides me through life and who inspires my hand in the poetry I write. My happiness comes from this source of knowledge and inner confidence which I have dug from inside me and which I have allowed to work through me. I used to complain about the things in my life which were going wrong, and I used to say things such as "what if" or "oh I want," but I did not really get anywhere. So I made a change. Change of location, change of attitude, change of how I prayed, change of how I meditated. And it's working. It's all good. Once I realized that I did not have to live for anyone but me, this huge weight was lifted from my shoulders, and nothing consumed me anymore. So I am happy. And that is my. My introduction. The best way I can let you in on who the hell Stephanie Kartalopoulos, the Greek Poet Chyck, really is. Welcome to my life. love you all, stephanie Stephanie Maria Kartalopoulos We should be very greatful to have a kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu limited body...like mine or like The Greek Poet Chyck yours. Hi, just wanted to let you know that my brother, Troy Campbell, will be opening Patty during some of her upcoming gigs in New York, Boston, Chicago, and Detroit. He was a little fuzzy on the details. Please say "hi" to him if you happen to catch one of his shows! I told him about this group, and he thought it was very cool. He has a band called "Loose Diamonds" that has several CDs out, and he is working on a solo record. We're hoping that Patty will put in an appearance on it. I first heard Patty when Troy gave me her CD. I have played it more than just about any other CD I have and I think she is brilliant. Unfortunately, I haven't seen her perform live yet, but am hoping she will be in the Bay Area after the new album is released. I met her recently, and can confirm all the reports that she is indeed a lovely person. I'll post again when I find out more details about the tour. Cheers, Glennia ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 14:06:55 EST From: Kashmyrkat Subject: MM: Hi all!!! Hi all, I noticed that ppl were posting about how they discovered Patty, so I thought I'd post real quick and chime in that I got to see her at Jewelstock in 1996 also. We tried to get the CD beforehand, but it wasn't available at the local CD store we tried, so we bought it at the show. I was taken by her immediately - what a voice! I just wish we could have a recording of it - especially her rendition of Crazy! :-) As everyone was getting pictures with Jewel, Rob (my husband for those who don't know us :-) and I noticed Patty standing off to the side, and so got the chance to meet her, get the CD signed and for Rob to get his picture taken with her. I have a picture of Patty and Jewel together on my music page at http://users.aol.com/tlcathome/music.htm if anyone wants to check it out :-) For anyone who cares and doesn't already know, my name is Tammy and I'm married and have 2 kiddies :-) both girls. We live in New Jersey. Hoping to make the Boston show, but it's pretty iffy (we really don't want to take the kids....). But, maybe we'll make it and see you there :-) Tammy :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 14:23:36 EST From: JEWELFAN22 Subject: MM: My Intro Hola Patty fans!!!! I'm Liz! I found out about Patty when I was told about JewelStock in the summer of '96. I went out and bought her CD (which I absolutely adore!). Then I got to actually see her perform at JewelStock!! It was incredible!!! I had to hold my friend Robb in his chair!! I've seen her a couple of times since then in the Detroit area. I'm going to see her play at the Ann Arbor Folk Fest (for the second year in a row) and I'm going to see her at the end of February in Ann Arbor! I love Patty's music! It rocks my world!!! I am glad that Mike finally got off his lazy butt and started this!!! ;-) Hmm...about myself...I'll be 17 in a month...I got my first traffic ticket last night....hmmm....I'm a Junior in high school, and I live in Toledo, OH, but I'm getting out of here ASAP!!!! Thanks for responses to my question about tab yesterday. The general consensus (at least what I've read so far) has been that it's ok. Which is good, because I've gotten a zillion private requests for it :-) so I'll just post it below. As for an intro, here it goes...My name is Jenna, I'm a 16 year old junior in high school. I live in suburban NJ, about 45 minutes from NYC. I discovered Patty Griffin through a friend's reccomendation, but the kick in the butt I needed to actually go BUY the cd was hearing her on WXPN, a REALLY good station for those of you near Philly. I had the pleasure of seeing her in Boston this summer, and in LA as well. Other than Patty, I love all sorts of folky music...Dar Williams (by the way, Kerry, it's so nice to see a familiar face on the list! :-), The Nields, Katell Keineg, Susan McKeown, 10,000 Maniacs, Richard Shindell, Beth Orton, Billy Bragg, etc, etc, ad infinitum. I also play guitar, or at least attempt it, and like politics and reading and writing...that's my general all purpose "intro." If you've gotten this far, thanks....here's the chords (not tab, sorry if i was misleading) for Sweet Lorraine, at least as I hear them. It's mostly strummed anyway.... I know I'm a little late with the whole intro thing, but I figured better late than never. I first saw Patty in November 1996 after an hour of waiting in 20' weather to be let in. Had I known how incredible her voice is, I would have gladly waited for days. Since that performance (She played with the Nields) I have been to four others, each one nothing less than electrifying. At one show, her manager Mike allowed me to go back to her hotel room where she and several of her friends were celebrating. She was so sweet! I had met her before, but had only asked for her autograph. She let me take a few pictures, then I had to leave the room, because I couldn't contain my excitement. I am eagerly awaiting her new CD (though I'm sure the same goes for all of us), but nothing can compare to Patty live and acoustic. I cannot wait to have "Cain" and "We Are Water" on tape, not to mention "One More Girl". If anyone has a copy of her first demo, I would love to send you a few blank tapes. Other artists I am interested in include Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Paula Cole, Dar Williams, Heather Nova, and Sam Phillips, though I am sure I forgot a few. Anyways, that's about all I'm going to bother you guys with- I'm amazed you made it this far! Hi all, I see many friends here already, but for those who don't know me, I'm Alan (aka in another world as MrBB). Thanks to the involvement of Dan Stark, who arranged Patty's performance at Jewelstock (summer 96), I was also converted that night. I think he's personally responsible for a lot of us being here! Thanks Dan! Although "LWG" is powerful & amazing throughout, I think it was "Poor Man's House" that first blew me away at Jewelstock. I've seen her several times since then & she's never dissipointed me. I love all the newer material with "Cain", "Wiggly Fingers" & "One More Girl" being current fixations. I must admit I miss both "I Write The Book" & "You Never Get What You Want", though. I've heard niether of those live since Jewelstock. I plan on prowling the streets of Boston & Northampton (& others) for the upcoming Patty shows with my CT compadre, Jerry (Flaming Red Websitemaster) Zigmont. Lookin forward to hooking up with lotsa you! Alan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 15:21:43 -0800 (PST) From: "D. Doody" Subject: MM: Jewelstock OK, call me clueless, but I'd never heard of the phenomenon known as Jewelstock until I joined this list. Can someone tell me when it occurred and who played? It sounds like it was quite a show (though I'm not a fan of the headliner). The chance to see Patty again would have been reason enough to suffer through any other acts. :-) Incidentally, I first heard of Patty when I went to a Border's performance by Jann Arden. I didn't know anything about any of the people playing (Jann, Billy Mann, and Patty) until I went to the store. I was early, so I started listening to LWG on the listening station and was blown away. She then performed a couple songs in the store, and a slightly longer set later that night at the actual show. Though she was first to perform, she was *definitely* the highlight of the evening. Since then, I've only had the opportunity to see her once more, opening for Shawn Colvin (and Freedy Johnston). Here's hoping she makes it out to Seattle again some time soon!! My name is Kim, I live in NJ, I first got introduced to Patty when I was up in Boston MA two summers ago... I picked up her CD randomly, I wanted a new female artist to listen to on my trip... Then I got to see her at JewelStock that month open up for Jewel... Since then I've seen her once more in NYC opening up for Freedy Johnston and Shawn Colvin... I plan to see her on February 20th when she plays Fez (Anyone know more about this? Time/times - sometimes they get to do 2 shows, Fiona Apple and Kristin Hersh did 2 shows when I saw them there... Seems like a common thing to do at that venue ) I got the Fez schedule a couple weeks ago and she is listed for February 20th... Don't know if it's definite though... You do need reservations for Fez though, there are no tickets... Anyway... that's about it... I'm very excited about Patty's new album, from trading I've gotten to hear so many of her new songs, I'm sure the album will be brilliant... Well take care all, hope to see you all at the show!
