I'd love a copy of this...but unfortunately I can't read it because of the format....if someone could please please please send me a copy of this in plain text, I would be extremely grateful! Also, what is the general feeling about posting tab on this list? Is it frowned upon, or considered ok? Just wondering, because I have a pretty good version of "Sweet Lorraine" figured out and would be happy to share it! =) Jenna § "she's gone where the goblins go, she's not coming back..."-susan mckeown http://members.aol.com/wunnder/brink.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 18:33:50 -0400 From: Chris Kornmann Subject: MM: patty & jules Hello... Just >wondering, because I have a pretty good version of "Sweet Lorraine" figured >out and would be happy to share it! =) I also manage the Jewel list on smoe.org, and there are more than a few musicians on that list (an understatement :), and tab postings are at times a semi-common occurance, and I have yet to receive any negative emails/complaints about them. To me it's no different than posting info about Patty, or lyrics or whatever. We are all hear for one main reason, Patty Griffin's music, but other reasons too....each of us likely for some slightly different reasons. I personally see nothing wrong with tab postings, even though I would likely have better luck reading and comprehending Martian, as I am a non-musician. As this list grows, we are likely to get more musicians/guitar players (duh Mike ;), so tab postings may be a welcome thing to many. Let's see how the others feel at the moment (if any others chime in on this), however I'd like to point out that this is one reason the delete button was made, non-tab users can just delete them (just opinion here) Mike :) **** The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 19:49:19 -0500 (EST) From: David Lewis Subject: MM: Tab and Intro >about posting tab on this list? Is it frowned upon, or considered ok? Good question Genna. I assume that anyone who looks at my little transcription will use it solely for their own enjoyment. By the way, Adobe Acrobat Reader is available for free from... http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html I'll add that URL to my web page. Also, I could create a plain text version... it's only actually 3 bars. The only thing is, I'm not much of an ASCII artist :) If you could email me your work on Sweet Lorraine I would really appreciate it and I could then use your ASCII as a template for a plain text version of Mad Mission. Bill b mentioned intros... silly me, I haven't introduced myself... I'm David Lewis, a freelance graphic designer from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is a Canadian province just north of Maine. Luckily the brutal ice storm which just passed went easy on Halifax. We're right on the ocean and the tempuratures are a little milder here than they are inland. As far as I know, no one here lost power. Unlike the 3 million or so folks in Montreal... many of whom may not have power for another two weeks! Anyway, I first heard Patty completely by accident! A good friend of mine who works in a record store recommended Gillian Welch (sp?) to me one day. She played some of it for me and I thought it would be a good CD but I wasn't totally convinced and I decided not to buy it right away. A few days later I *did* decide to buy it but I'd forgotten the name of the artist! My friend wasn't working that day so I couldn't ask her who the artist was. I asked *another* clerk about the CD telling her that it was a female singer/songwriter who played guitar, sounded very folky, very 'old-timey', very 'Appallacian'. I was looking for Gillian Welch but I didn't know that and neither did the cleck of course! So she sold me Living With Ghosts! I happily bought it without even listening to it since I though it was the CD my *other* record store friend had played for me earlier. What a happy mistake. I was utterly stunned. Some of the tunes on Living With Ghosts moved me to tears after I got around to reading the lyrics. Patty is amazing. I'm glad my friend wasn't working that day. I still don't own any Gillian Welch CD's :) I may try to convince a friend to drive down to Boston for one of Patty's upcoming shows. It's only about 10 hours and I know there's no way she'll ever appear up this way. If so, I hope to see some of you then! To order up back digests, it's a little more involved. Rather than post instructions right now on the format/commands on how to get back digests, if you are interested in any, just email me and I can send them to you licketty-split :) Mike :) **** The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm Ducksoup@spectra.net DuckofPrey@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 20:28:15 EST From: BluClouds Subject: Re: MM: patty in boston Like Bill, I too will be at Patty's show in Boston! Anyway, I love her cd, and can't wait to see her in Boston next month, and hang out with all my other friends that are going (hi bill, chris, steph, tom, vicki, etc!!) I hope to meet everyone else that is going :) Also big huge hugs to Mike and Jeff for getting this list going, I'm glad it's finally here after waiting for it for a while!!! WOOHOO! More fun for my neigbors to hear me wail away when my voice and the chords I'm banging out have at least some correlation to each other. BTW, I'm Shelley. I first heard of Patty Griffin when I saw her open for Shawn Colvin in San Francisco--of her, Freedy Johnson (the other opening act), and SC, Patty put on by far the most energetic and emotional show (even if I couldn't understand the lyrics from my nosebleed seats). A couple of weeks later, I saw her CD when I was out shopping with a friend, and bought it on a whim. And when I finally played it, I couldn't tear myself away. I read on a website or in some review that she wrote some of the songs sitting on the edge of her bathtub, then went into the studio and recorded them the next day...and that's what it sounds like. The kind of album you play for days on end on repeat, just to remind yourself that with all the other crap going on, you're still human; you're still alive. Hey all, So far, I've been happy to see that this list is, essentially, unmoderated and, until there is a reason it should be otherwise, I like it this way. Consequently, I think people should be free to post tabs (which I, personally, would LOVE- and if anyone has that Mad Mission in regular text, I'd love a copy, too- I really can't download any more programs onto my poor overworked computer :), discuss the trading of live recordings, etc. I'm on another mailing list (which shall remain nameless though many of you know exactly which one I'm talking about ;) where I think the rules for what can and can't be discussed are ridiculous. Gawd forbid you mention a live recording- the list owner has a hissy fit and you can't even ask a question without him leaping on you that you should have looked elsewhere and not troubled the list with your question. It's stifling. Anyway, I really appreciate the way things are on this list, right now, and I hope they stay like this. Post tabs, discuss tapes, knock yourselves out, I say! I'm on some other lists so maybe others may know me. I've been lurking for a bit trying to get more info on upcoming shows before I post anything but since it's slow I'll post this now. I first heard about Patty on another list awhile ago. Then, one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Gregory Page, covered "Mad Mission" at one of his shows so I asked him about her. She just happened to be playing a free show in San Diego a few weeks after that. She's really a wonderful talent and I'm glad there's a list for her. Hope everyone has a good time at her upcoming shows. Let her know that Southern California is anxiously waiting for her return.
