C'mon people, you're disappointing me! Well, I must say, I was kinda bummed that Patty only played for an hour. Dave and I went through hell and high water (it was literally planes, trains, and automobiles for this MM'er) to get to NYC and Patty only played for an hour! It was still a great show, though. I actually got to see her perform solo AND play piano, so that was a treat. She even told us a duck joke. It was SO bad, but I still laughed because she was so cute when she told it. Let's see, she cut her finger and started bleeding during "Little God" (which Dave said was a rather appropriate song for her to cut her finger on), introduced a new song ("Makin' Pies), and played the bluesy intro to "Flaming Red" (which this MM'er just LOVES). Most of the techs that were directing people to their seats were nice, but this one woman was so condescending to the men in front of us ("C'mon guys, let's make a decision QUICKLY!"). I wanted to tell her that maybe she needed to take a crash course in human decency before filling out a job application. Patty looked fantastic. She wore her hair up in a claw clip and was wearing a really nice long black leather coat with jeans and very high heeled boots. She always looks so sharp and snazzy! Anyway, I hope other MM'ers post reviews. We were running (literally) late and got to the venue around 3:00 so I didn't get to meet anyone from the list who was in line. PLUS, I didn't see one damn bag of M&M's in anyone else's hands! Oh well...maybe next time. Oh, and to Judith: we ate at Little Saigon on Restaurant Row after the show. It was yummy. -Cristina P.S. NYC is surreal. ************************************** "A few witches burning gets a little toasty here..." -Tori Amos, "God" ************************************** From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Sun Oct 3 20:56:30 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id UAA21142 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Sun, 3 Oct 1999 20:55:26 -0400 (EDT) From: UMCaner74@aol.com Received: from UMCaner74@aol.com by imo11.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v23.6.) id pBCVa14352 (4190) for ; Sun, 3 Oct 1999 18:50:45 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <0.c4cebbfb.252937c5@aol.com> Date: Sun, 3 Oct 1999 18:50:45 EDT Subject: PattyG-News: Sessions, bloody fingers, ducks, laughing, M&M's, lasting memories,Patty's band To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hello to all my Mad Mission friends, First of all, I want to apologize to everyone who I had hoped to meet at Sessions. Many, many acts of god delayed me and kept me from getting there early enough to hang with all of you fine supporters of the single greatest musician on this planet. For everyone who couldn't make it to the show...here's just a bit of what you missed... Before I get into Patty's performance, I want to thank the staff of Sessions, and whoever else made this very special event possible for all of us MM'ers to attend. I can't say enough how grateful we should be to these folks for not forgetting Patty's BIGGEST fans! Furthermore, Patty and her band sounded as good as I've ever heard them, the mix was the best I've ever heard it, and the acoustics there were awesome! Patty and the band's performances of Silver Bell, Flaming Red, Goodbye, and Mary were all memerorable. Little God was so powerful that it sent chills down the entire length of my spine. During the song, she cut her finger while picking, and was bleeding all over her guitar. It would be a shame if this song didn't make it on the show just b/c of a little blood. Kinda gives a new meaning to that Springsteen song where he says "bought a brand new six string, played it til my fingers bled" doesn't it? Speaking of Springsteen.... The way the venue is set up, the fans sit in a circle surrounding the performer, giving it a "in the round" feeling. It's very intimate there, with only maybe 200 people or so being capacity. In between songs, Patty said something like, if I was Bruce Springsteen, I'd be moving all over the place and facing every direction...."but I'm just Patty Griffin". Michelle mentioned earlier about how she messed up Peter Pan 3 different times, before finally getting it right on the 4th try. I actually saw her play this song the 1st time she ever performed it back in October of '98. She mentioned that she had been over at this music store down the street for hours playing the piano VERY BADLY, until the guy in there finally kicked her out. On the night of her 1st performance, she cracked up laughing at herself quite a few times too. I knew once she messed up the 1st time that she would not be able to make it through the next few times either. I don't know what it is, I could just tell by the look on her face that every time she came to that same part that she'd just burst out laughing...it was SO cute, it would be nice if they showed that at the end of the show (when it finally airs)...maybe while the credits are running or something. Patty also told an incredibly funny joke about a duck going into a bar, and asking for duck food. I'm not going to go into it...for those of you who want to know the joke, you can email me privately. What was so funny about the joke was not really the joke itself, but the way that Patty tells a joke. She has to be the absolute worst, yet cutest joke teller ever. I may have been the only one, but I was barely able to keep from laughing out loud as she started the next song. There are so many other things about the show that I just can't think of at the moment.... Oh, the new song Making Pies was really cute. It's played solo, and is really a different kind of a song for Patty. I remembered later that night, that I did hear her play that song in Annapolis, MD at the Ram's Head show earlier this year. At that time, I had never heard that song before...and I really couldn't remember if that was the same song again or not. Maybe it has changed a bit since then?? On a non-Patty note, Cristina should be commended for being an INCREDIBLY good sport through the incredibly frustrating day (besides the show itself) that we had yesterday. She took a plane up from Nashville, TN Friday night just to see this show! Now, is that a REAL Patty fan for you or what? On top of being a good sport though, I was very happy to find out that...as a fellow animal lover, she was just as nice of a person as I had thought she would be. :-) Well, that is all for now... I hope that everyone who was able to attend the taping had a safe trip home. To everyone who could not make it, I hope that Patty comes to your neck of the woods soon. Patty is the most amazing artist that I have every played with and unless a surviving Beatle asks me to joins his band, I have reason to believe that will always be the case. This is further supported by the fact that fans from Nashville (my home) flew up to New York, of all places, to see us play for an hour. Playing music is all that I have ever wanted to do. It is a bonus that I get to do it with Patty and the rest of the band, and in front of people that love good music. To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk I've already written to Patty and her band informing her of the amazing news, but I wanted to pass this information along to all of the fans. One of Patty's tunes is going to be performed for tens of thousands of people night after night for the next few weeks/months. Last night was the opening night of Bette Midler's "Divine Miss Millenium Tour." In the middle of the second half of an incredible show, Bette began telling a story about how she's been reading the Bible ("the first book, and the sequel"). She related her current life and how she's raising a teenager to how "Jesus and his mom" must have gotten along and how she could just imagine how Mary would leave Jesus' room just the way he'd left it when he went off for a while. She was more emotional than at any other point during the show. Slowly her story finished (the band had been playing the opening chords all along). Then, slowly, she began performing Patty Griffin's "Mary." Needless to say it was incredible. (I think the people I was at the show with were the only people in the sold-out audience who had any idea what the song was or how important it was that Bette was performing it.) Rich backing harmonies on the choruses. Bette almost exactly imitating Patty's "na-na-na's" towards the end of the song. It was a wonderful homage to one of the greatest songwriters of our time...needless to say, the crowd went WILD! She ended by saying that that was the first time EVER that she'd performed that song in public. "Should I sing it again?" she timidly asked (sarcastically after the crowd's amazing response to the song.) Again, the crowd went wild. [For public performance of covers, no permission has to be granted, so I'm not sure if Patty is/was aware that Bette would be performing the song. So here I am passing the information along.] Ta ta for now (and it was good to see everyone at "Sessions" last weekend!). Take care, all of you. The two new shows are both in New York City at the Fez, one each on November 21st & 22nd. Both shows are solo (no band), as is the show on the 20th at the Keswick Theatre in Philadelhia. (Patty opening for Richard Thompson). I do not know the times of these shows. NYC MMers, start diggin' up the info! :-) Troy Campbell is opening for Patty at the Fez shows. (I like Troy! :-) I do not know if any other shows are in the works at this time. The email also mentioned that "Patty has been working on songs for a new record that will probably be recorded starting in January". No mention if it was to be solo, with a band or what kind of mixture thereof. You know all that I know. :-) Of course, this does not mean she WILL be recording in January.....more than a few times I've seen recording plans by various artists get pushed back.
