Ellis Paul is holed away at a recording studio mastering his next release...a two-disc live record! Ellis fans are going to be blown away. There are a bunch of never-released new songs, special guests like Patty Griffin, Chris Trapper of The Push Stars, Vance Gilbert, and others, and lots of magical moments recorded at the beautiful Somerville Theater in the Boston area. Look for the live record in the first part of 2000 on the Rounder/Philo label. It will be a busy end of the decade for Ellis. In addition to the live CD, he has several other projects in the works : Ellis is looking to publish a book of his writing, lyrics, drawings, journal entries, and poems. Coming from a mostly pop and rock background, I was unfamiliar with most modern folk and folk/rock music. I was unusually lucky to have Ellis Paul give me my first lesson in modern folk, as I gave "Translucent Soul" a listen. It's not often that a CD's opening track grabs my attention as dramatically as "Take Me Down" did. The Boston-based singer songwriter has a knack for writing melodious, fluid, simple songs. Often times, songs are dominated by three or four chords, yet his floaty vocals, fluid guitar playing, subtly cool production and intelligent lyrics overshadow any slight oversimplicity in his songwriting. The excellent mix of guitar, keyboards, and light drums on this album are just the right tools to convey Ellis' passion. The first track "Take Me Down" really drew me into the album and enticed me to listen more. I am incredibly impressed with the simple yet powerful songwriting of track number three, entitled "Seven". It takes the somber mood to a new level and builds up to a truly amazing chorus and bridge. This song quickly and easily became one of my new favorite songs. What a wonderful amalgamation of melody and rhythm. Ellis' introspective lyrics are, for the most part, a very interesting window into his consciousness, and are as diverse as they are melodic. "Did I Ever Know You?" and "She Loves a Girl" are excellent examples. Without a complete listen, the average Joe may pass off "Translucent Soul" as being wimpy and perhaps too touchy-feely. Ok, so maybe it's a little bit on the sensitive side, but anyone with even the slightest sliver of passion in their soul will appreciate this album. Besides, what's folk without being honest and true to your feelings? Ellis has received acclaim from many major publications, with good reason. Ellis may just be the folk/rock crossover artist that will put a new twist on our airwaves. Even if Mr. Paul doesn't breakthrough to mainstream radio, his music will be heard by his countless fans and continue to bring powerful music into the lives of many. It's great to hear passionate music again. I was wondering where it had gone, but I guess Ellis has been doing it all along. -- Ethan Tufts ### From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Thu Sep 23 22:53:26 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id WAA11994 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Thu, 23 Sep 1999 22:52:59 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pronetisp.net (mail.pronetisp.net [12.23.44.4]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-jane) with SMTP id WAA11981 for ; Thu, 23 Sep 1999 22:52:54 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 19076 invoked from network); 24 Sep 1999 02:52:45 -0000 Received: from dialin-bing46-58.pronetisp.net (HELO uglyducklink) (12.23.46.58) by mail.pronetisp.net with SMTP; 24 Sep 1999 02:52:45 -0000 Message-Id: <4.2.0.58.19990923215257.00a30e90@pop.pronetisp.net> X-Sender: ducksoup@pop.pronetisp.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.0.58 Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 22:54:29 -0400 To: mad-mission@smoe.org, mad-mission-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: PattyG-News: Free tickets for Patty TV taping - info to be posted Friday night Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks :-) As Alan Bershaw mentioned on this list two weeks ago, Patty will be soon taping a television program in New York City that airs on PBS television in the US of A.... "Sessions At West 54th"....and a limited number of Mad Mission list members (plus ONE guest each) who can definitely make it to the show will be invited, free of charge! I just wanted to send this "heads up" post now for the benefit of those that subscribe only from their work addresses, and/or those folks going away for the weekend, as the informational post I will be sending that you MUST reply to in order to receive an invitation will not be posted until sometime tomorrow (Friday) evening. I am not sure at this time if there is a deadline for replying, so it may be best for those of you in the above situations to make provisions for checking your email either Friday evening or sometime on Saturday, as I likely will not be able to send the information on to this list until after 6:00pm ET or so. I will tell you this much now, and it is generally good news allowing for more of you to attend! The taping will be on (in?) the afternoon of SATURDAY October 2nd.....one week from this Saturday :-) (Please do not ask me what time the taping starts, I cannot reveal that at this time). When the post arrives Friday evening, PLEASE read it carefully and fully BEFORE replying, as there is some important information that you will HAVE to include in your reply in order to be invited. Also, please note that you will NOT be replying to me, you will be replying to an email address at the Sessions H.Q. that I will provide in the post. So be certain to send your informational reply to that address, not me. One last thing. there are a limited number of seats at this gig, and only perhaps a third of them will be invitees from this list, so just replying is not a guarantee that you will be invited, it all depends on how many replies they get. So, if you want to attend this taping, keep your eyes peeled for a post from me tomorrow night. In case you missed the previous posts talking about it, Patty will be taped live in concert in midtown Manhattan on the afternoon of Saturday October 2nd (NEXT weekend!), in a small/intimate setting which barely seats 300 people, and best of all it's FREE! If you live in the New York City area, or can make the trip and definitely be there and would like to attend, all you have to do is send an email to: p_griffin_tix@freetix.com You do not have to put anything in the body of the email, but you DO have to put your FULL NAME (last name first, then first name) in the subject of the email. Please make sure you get all of this right before you send the request to the Sessions people, as it will make it easier for them to do their jobs. All requests must be received by Tuesday September 28th and all requests will be checked against the subscription logs of the Mad Mission lists. Just so you know, they have around 76-100 tickets set aside for members (plus one guest each) of the Mad Mission mailing lists, which means between 38 to 50 of you will be chosen/invited. (if you don't have a guest in mind, why not try and find one? You'd have two seats anyway...turn a friend on to Patty's music!). If you are one of the invited, the Sessions people will contact you sometime next week via email with all of the information you will need to attend. Once again, send your requests to: p_griffin_tix@freetix.com (do NOT send them to me) and have your last name, then first name in the SUBJECT of the email (it does not matter what you have in the body of the email) Good luck! Mike :-) P.S. At this time I do not know anything about whether or not this is acoustic, with the band, how long the gig will be start to finish (two weeks ago Jewel's was 3 hours), but if I find out anything I will send it on to the list. - * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.quackquack.net/pattyg * * Rachel Martin's Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive is at * http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/patty.html * * Jerry Zigmont's Flaming Red - A Patty Griffin Website is at * http://members.tripod.com/PattyGriffin * * Katie Peterson's Patty Griffin Guitar Tabs Archive is at * http://members.tripod.com/~Lifey/patty.html * * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL and/or AOL Instant Messenger From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Fri Sep 24 18:02:23 1999 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id SAA12247 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Fri, 24 Sep 1999 18:01:42 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199909242201.SAA12247@smoe.org> Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 17:03:45 -0400 From: Elaine Bean Subject: PattyG-News: Laurie Geltman House Concert To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Boston Rocker Laurie Geltman will be performing at my home in Watertown, MA on Nov. 7.
