None other than our Patty is the feature this week. This site gets zillions (approx) of hits per week so I'm sure it will turn many onto Patty. Below is the text of their article. Audio clips & the most basic of Patty links are also included there. The URL is http://www.rockontv.com. Didn't see any upcoming Patty TV appearances though. Sure would like to see her get some TV exposure sometime. She's done very little in the video medium. All the best, Alan RockOnTV - Artist of The Week. PATTY GRIFFIN An artist about to explode! Forget everything you think you know about Patty Griffin, either as a songwriter, singer or performer. With the release of FLAMING RED, her second album for A&M Records, you are about to really hear her for the first time. Unlike her 1996 debut recording, the sparse, universally-acclaimed LIVING WITH GHOSTS--which was actually a collection Griffin's song demos which featured her accompanied only by her acoustic guitar--FLAMING RED is an album chock full of big guitars, drums, keyboards, percussion, and her stunning, evocative voice. On FLAMING RED, Griffin indulges the restless whimsy and fantasy of her wildly divergent tastes in music, showcasing 13 new songs in as many settings. There are some ballads ("Goodbye" and "Big Daddy"), but there are plenty of rock and roll tunes ("Change," "Wiggley Fingers") and pop tomes ("Blue Sky" and the first single "One Big Love") that extend her aesthetic reach and prove that, as an artist, she can accomplish virtually anything she sets out to. "I just tried to give myself permission to do things I love to do. I am trying to be myself here and that happens to be a lot of different things. I don't want to be led around by classifications as to what I can and can't do. I'm not a kid and I want to indulge everything, even confusion." Griffin is originally from Old Town, Maine, just outside of Bangor. "They make canoes there," she says. The youngest of the family, tagging behind her three brothers and three sisters, she followed her mother around as she did housework, listening to her sing. "My mom is an amazing singer. People turn around in church to tell her so and my grandmother's family used to sing on their porch at night, watch the sun go down and harmonize, so I guess it's in my blood." Produced by Jay Joyce, who also provides most of the album's stunning guitar work, FLAMING RED also features one of the greatest drummers around in the venerable Kenny Aronoff. "Jay and a lot of the other musicians on this record seems to have as diverse tastes musically as I do," she explains. The ensemble provides Griffin with the support she deserves in delivering an album which will undoubtedly establish her as an artist of rare merit. The songs on FLAMING RED range from raw, primal rockers like the tittle track, a song about the famed fairy tale of the Red Shoes, to shimmering pop songs such as "Christina" based on the troubled life of Christina Onasis. The pieces are all of a whole and move in directions to give the album a distinct sound, that, as wildly divergent as it is from Griffin's debut outing, is the first real taste listeners will get of her expansive and passionate musical vision and of her singular interpretive abilities as a singer ."There are a few songs from the archives here as well as some brand new stuff. These songs just ended up working well together. I didn't think about what I wanted to say. The music had its own life. And whether Griffin is rocking out while revealing the ironies of desire as she does on "Wiggley Fingers," or exploding spiritual myths as she does on the atmospheric, dreamily-textured "Mary," she successfully evades all attempts at being pigeonholed. And lest anyone should wonder if the emotion in her delivery that sets her apart from other singers has been at all tamed, one listen to the simply arranged and deeply moving "Go Now," should dispel those notions. If anything, because of the breadth of this project, Griffin has reached new levels of maturity and depth as a singer. "What we did, Jay and I, was to give all of these songs of mine new lives, and I'm at home in their arrangements. They aren't painted over me and I'm not propped up on top of them." Griffin has a busy summer planned, touring with a full band instead of just her guitar. With the release of FLAMING RED likely pushing her into the limelight, the next year will find her headlining her own dates as well as being featured on this summer's Lillith Fair, where she'll be reaching an ever-widening audience while surprising and delighting existing fans. FLAMING RED is a not only a record that challenges and amazes as a singular work, but one that makes LIVING WITH GHOSTS even more fascinating than the first time. It provides the rare chance to glimpse back at an artist's rawest, single-take demo beginnings--the pure songwriting essence that has metamorphosed into the broader vision she delivers on her first real studio outing, FLAMING RED. Gotta lotta (gotta lotta??) info here from Patty's management....so here goes :-) At the end of all of this is the complete and up-to-date schedule of tour dates and shows/appearances for this fall, which stretches into early December. (It includes a national anthem singing at an Indianapolis Colts game, her third such appearance :-) News (in no specific order): SPECIAL NOTE TO EUROPEAN FANS OF PATTY: there *may* be a tour in Europe in early 1999. However, Patty's management would like input from you as to where in Europe Patty is getting airplay. Please reply to me privately with any input you have and I can pass it on to her management. Some t-shirts will be available at the shows. This is the only official merchandise there will be. He mentioned something about a t-shirt with a glittery red thingy/sticker/patch on it that has been available before. Perhaps someone can post and clarify this. (Liz? You got one of these didn't ya?) A director has been identified (I wasn't told who) and a storyboard has been drawn up for a video for "One Big Love". If done, shooting would be in November (where is not known) with a release in January at the earliest. It's also possible the first video would be a song other than "One Big Love". No info is available on what it would be. Patty has been contacted by the Conan O'Brien and David Letterman shows and "and some other shows" concerning an appearance, however nothing has been booked as of yet. (I got the feeling they aren't "into it" yet) "One Big Love" was released sometime in mid-September to all the Top 40 and AAA format radio stations, so airplay should start to rise! :-) There are NO plans for a commercially available release for this single. It just dawned on me that I don't know if this release means in the USA only, USA & Canada or worldwide. I'll have to ask. (although my best guess is USA and Canada) Perhaps someone can post and clarify the difference between a Top 40 station and a AAA station. I do know what it is, but I'm certain someone on this list (Dan Stark?) can do a much better job explaining it than I could. In October, "Change" will be released to radio stations in the AAA format. There are NO plans for a commercially available release for this single. In January, the second single will be released in the Top 40 market, with a simultaneous release to the AAA format stations. It will either be "Tony" or "Blue Sky". There are NO plans for a commercially available release for this single. Patty's management was overjoyed with the on-list response to their query as to what her fans feel should be the second release from Flaming Red and it *did* influence the decision making process. They were quite impressed with the variety and depth of the discussion/opinions. Contrary to what a recent post said on the Mad-Mission mailing list, Living With Ghosts has not been "deleted" nor is out of print. (I've recently seen it in 3 of the 5 major CD stores here) Well, other than the tour dates (below)....that's it!
