I havent seen this show listed on tour dates so I thought i'd let people know about it. It's at the 400 bar in Minneapolis. (corner of Cedar and Riverside) near the west bank of the U of M. It's on friday, Aug. 28th @ 10pm (9pm doors). Tickets are $17 advance and $18 day of the show. Ouch! pretty steep, but what the hell i'm still gonna go. The 400 a pretty cool place, I played there years ago with a band I was in, it used to be a dive but a few years ago they tore down a wall expanding the bar and remodeled a bit. It still not a huge bar so the setting should be intimate. The last time patty was here was a Bunkers and it was a private show only (I did manage to get in though) she was awsome but the show was short, this time it looks like she'll be playing alot longer. looking forward to it! It looks like that in a month or so, they are going to release "One Big Love" (OBL) to the all of the Top 40 stations....the previous release of OBL wasn't to Top 40 per say....when the advance CD of Flaming Red went out to the media in April, a CD single copy of OBL also went out to key "top 40's" and some key stations in all formats in all of the bigger radio markets. They now want to push it in all markets and to all the Top 40 stations. So air play SHOULD skyrocket soon!! :-) Watch her fly! OK....here's what's up....Michael Baker has asked me to get input from all of you as to what song on Flaming Red do you feel should be the SECOND single to be released and why. I guess they are perhaps torn between a few choices and maybe with some quality input from core fans, their decision may be easier :-) That's it, plain and simple. Please reply to the list with your answer :-) (Those of you on the news-only list CAN post to the regular list by sending email to mad-mission@smoe.org :-) Mike :-) * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm * * Rachel Martin's Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive is at * http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/patty.html * * Jerry Zigmont's Flaming Red - A Patty Griffin Website is at * http://w3.nai.net/~zigmont * * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Tue Aug 11 20:35:34 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id UAA08533 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Tue, 11 Aug 1998 20:34:53 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199808120034.UAA08533@smoe.org> Date: Tue, 11 Aug 1998 19:47:31 +0000 Subject: PattyG-News: MM: New single....available :-) From: Charl Kroeger To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all, Firstly let me tell you guys that may be interested: you can get OBL on single ($6.00 + $3.00 p&p) from www.Brouhahacd.com, mine arrived yesterday, and while the mixes are not earthshatteringly different to the album track it is nonetheless of interest to any collector. There are basically 3 mixes of OBL on the single which is packaged in a really bright typical-to-the-album red cover. Also if anyone is interested, at www.tunnelrecords.com, you can get the following (assuming that they have stock): 1. "Every Little Bit" SPECIAL PACKAGE $7.00 2. "Let Him Fly"(2 Mixes) "Every Little Bit" $6.00 3. "Moses", "Mad Mission", "Let Him Fly", "Every Little Bit" $6.00 Next, to the new single: my vote would be for either: a) Tony - 'cos it's a subject close to a lot of people and aside from being an awesome song in all aspects, it's a really relevant topic to get "out there" or b) Blue Sky - this has to be my second favorite on the FR album and in fact is probably more radio friendly than Tony. I love the way it effortlessly rolls along. It could be a very good follow-up to OBL. Mike, is there any way that you can communicate to the management that it would be a really cool idea to add unreleased songs as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th tracks on CD singles? I am sure that they are aware how avidly mishers collect the rarities and this would be a cool way for us to get hold of that stuff and support Patty's career all in one! So what do all you other mishers think for the new single? I copied this from a news service I subscribe to. Enjoy! Mark Nashville,TN Patty Griffin on fire in New York August 20, 1998 8:23 AM EDT Patty Griffin (Bowery Ballroom; capacity 500; $12) By David Sprague NEW YORK (Variety) - When watching a race between what seems to be evenly matched participants, it's always exciting to see one pull away from the pack. Singer/songwriter Patty Griffin made just that sort of move during a bracing set Tuesday evening, serving notice that she's set to leave her guitar-toting, post-Lilith Fair peers in the dust. She's developed her voice considerably since the release of her 1996 debut, ``Living With Ghosts,'' replacing the much-ado-about-nothing confessionals with finely honed storytelling and the little-girl-lost quaver with a powerful robust belt that emanates from deep within. The only criticism you could level at the new, improved Griffin is that she sometimes overdoes the intensity, chewing the scenery instead of furthering the storylines of some of the more turbulent songs from her new ``Flaming Red'' album. Of course, that might have something to do with the inexplicable choice to force her to screech over the strident churning of a pedestrian bar band that all but drowned her out for much of the set's first third. A solo acoustic interlude proved far more effective in showcasing her charms, most notably an offhand, slightly slurry delivery -- deployed delightfully on ``Mad Mission'' -- which splits the difference between Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell. Original compositions such as ``Change'' and ``Christina'' (a sketch of Christina Onassis' life) were mostly first-rate, as was Griffin's ear for covers, which led to a radiant version of Patsy Cline's ``Crazy.'' and a take on the Replacements' ``Alex Chilton'' which captured all the starry-eyed enthusiasm of the original. Griffin really proved her mettle, however, when she brought out Emmylou Harris to share vocals on ``Mary,'' a hymn-like piece that ended the set. Rather than take the safe route and hang back to let her guest steal the show, the younger performer matched her note for note, leaving Harris -- and the audience -- smiling in appreciation. The hard place is the category of the empathetic female songbird, currently the main one (besides rhythm and blues diva) open to women who want to make it to the top of the charts. With her gem-cut voice and unceremoniously insightful songs, Griffin could easily settle into that style. Rock, however, is where Griffin wants to take her fluent music, and on "Flaming Red," her second album for A & M Records, she has amplified the spare sound she formerly pursued. At the Bowery Ballroom, she surrounded herself with strapping rock dudes who delivered the vigorous power chords and neat rhythms that characterize mainstream modern pop. Griffin's strong voice was occasionally drowned out by the band's innocuous din. She did her best to muscle in front of it, pushing herself into overdrive, but rarely did her approach mesh with the music. She was more daring than it ever was. It is tempting to urge Griffin to return to the metaphorical singer-songwriter's corner, where small but attentive audiences would hang on her every well-turned phrase. The crowd that filled the ballroom cheered when she dismissed the band to perform a few older songs; clearly they loved Griffin for her passionate storytelling, which is easier to follow when she stands alone. But she is ambitious for more, and she deserves to be. Songs like 'Let Him Fly," a heartbreaking goodbye to a careless love, and "Mary," a rueful, gentle meditation on the Virgin, so far outrank the greeting-card confessions of the likes of Jewel that it seems a cruel joke that they have been ignored. Pure folk singers, no matter how brilliant, do not get radio airplay. A veteran of pop marketing games like Emmylou Harris, who joined Griffin to sing on "Mary," might have told her that. To make it, a singer needs to rock a little bit -- but women, especially, must not run too wild. Convincing rock music unleashes energy that runs counter to expectations, and for all of the breakthrough female musicians right now, barely any challenge palatable prettiness. Griffin sings and writes as if she wants to do so; she even led her band through a crashing version of "Alex Chilton," a song written by the Replacements, one band whose career was an ongoing scuffle with the mainstream, in honor of Chilton, another artist who did his best in that hard battle. But the nice noise Griffin is currently making defeats such a foray, even if it takes her to the top. On her sophomore release, "Flaming Red" (A&M), the thirty-four-year-old New England singer-songwriter conjures characters, startling for their pain and complexity, including a sexual repressed preist ("Wiggley Fingers"), and an emotionally bruised woman whose love leaves her ("change"). Think of Griffin as the dark, dissonant chord amid the Lilith Fair contingent, with whom she just finished touring. Through her songs, the acutely shy Griffin writes about quiet desperation with both empathy and grace. "I've been singing since i was little. I grew up the youngest in a family of seven kids, and having to struggle for attention really did a number on my need to express myself," she explains. "Because I'm shy, I had to learn to convey what was inside of me forcefully - and music provided that." When she began recording, Griffin was too reclusive even to collaborate with other musicians. As a result, her first CD, "Living With Ghosts" (1996), while critically hailed, led to the mistaken impression that she was the modern-day Joan Baez. Just as many critics found the stark emotionalism in her songs unnerving, Griffin was taken aback by the reviews: "To me," Griffin says with a laugh, "nothing was more shocking than being called a folksinger." Overcoming her shyness, on Flaming Red, Griffin enlists a bland and melds fiery rock'n'roll with country-folk, jazzy standards, and bright pop like "One Big Love" - a song about risking it all. Griffin's risks have paid off: "One Big Love" is her first big hit. Hope you enjoy Shawnte' "You can have it all - you just have to be willing to give up what you already have." To say the least I was really disappointed. I called 328 and the guy on the phone made it sound like Patty's management really made them jump through hoops and then went and canceled on them. He was apparently pissed off at the whole situation. I won't presume to know anything about what goes on behind the scene in this business but suffice it to say that a lot of people in Nashville will be pretty disappointed if she doesn't bring her tour through this city again (especially since FR was recorded here). I say again because she played a very small club here back in July as a warm up to her present tour. The reviews of that show that came back to me were that it wasn't very polished, but good never the less. It appears that her most recent shows are getting good reviews so I was really looking forward to seeing the polished product. Is there a web site that is publishing Patty's tour dates. The only one's I've seen show dates thru the end of August. Any additional info would be appreciated. Thanx, Mark Nashville,TN
