The best music store in Houston, Cactus Music & Video, was giving away free Patty Griffin baby t-shirts w/ purchase of the FR cd. I thought it was an odd promo, the t - shirt really is TINY, but has this cool glittery iron-on design on the front with Patty's name embedded in the silver glitter and underneath that is the album name in the red glitter. PLUS, and I do mean PLUS, you get to register to win a Baby Taylor guitar autographed by Patty. Has anyone else gotten any other Patty goodies when they bought the cd? I guess A&M is behind this. David p.s. Thanks everyone for crossing your fingers to help me win the autographed guitar, I love you all! Wish me luck! I've been woefully behind in reading email, so I'm sot sure if this has been reported yet, but Patty is featured in a full-page article in the July 1998 issue of "Pulse!" Magazine (Tower Records' in-store mag). Here it is: Patty Griffin -- Pulse Magazine July, 1998: "It's better than slinging pies." (By Tom Lanham) It wasn't the wacky work-life depicted in TV sitcoms like "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place," sighs feisty folk-rocker Patty Griffin. Not even close. During the five pre-songwriting years she was slinging slices in a Boston parlor, she says, "you can walk up to a table of 10 people, and three of those people are being the biggest assholes in the world to you, but the rest of the table is completely oblivious. For some reason, they can'/t see this going on, while you can see the whole scenario ‘cause you're waiting on them." Her conclusion? "Waitressing is a shitty job, and that's why -- because people are simply not respectful." In these chattery days of talk-show/chatroom overdrive, Griffin wonders: Can folks shut the hell up for once and attempt to rediscover the lost art of listening? She did, thanks to that humbling table-server experience. "People didn't listen when I was waitressing; people were always in their own heads -- which forced me to deal with the anger that I'd been carrying around with me for a long time," says Griffin, who, on her sophomore stunner "Flaming Red," quietly observes some uncomfortably dark strains of human interaction. From the suicidal adolescent in "Tony," through an emotionally abused housewife in "Change," to the isolated, ivory-towered heiress in "Christina," Griffin's coolly detached character studies could only have coalesced in silence, in the ability to pay close attention to the conversations of others. The youngest of seven kids, Griffin says she learned how to keep mum from an early age. And she stayed hushed right up to the splintering of her marriage in ‘92, when the diminutive -- but megaphoned-voiced -- redhead began venting her frustration through song. The psychology of this transformation never ceases to awe her. "One of the reasons I do music is because I'm shy. And if you're shy, you don't talk much, and if you don't talk much, you're kind of inarticulate, you can't really express yourself well in a conversation. So a lot of the inability to listen, I think, is the fear of not being heard. And because of the way our society is set up and running now, there's not a lot of compassion out there for individuals, and people are in desperate need of talking and expressing themselves." Which tramples precious attentiveness under foot, she believes. "I don't know how many times I've sat in a group of adults -- all grown people -- where they're constantly interrupting each other and never letting each other finish, just a constant battle. I get stressed out just ‘thinking' about it." But 34-year-old Griffin -- like many an ex-food server -- knows the power of assertiveness. While her "Living With Ghosts" debut was soft-sung tentative, "Flaming Red" cranks up the guitar amps to put some jangly juice behind such visceral metaphors as "Dog comes howling up behind you, sinks his teeth in your leg / Tells you how now things are going to be a little different / And he takes you down a peg." And it's like this, explains Griffin, who terms her compositions "musical farts": "I don't set out on a mission to learn about certain things -- I just have a process going on inside myself, and I follow those thoughts until the songs just pop out and articulate things for me. Then I can learn things from my songs." Slinging the pizza also taught Griffin two more priceless lessons: One, the value of hard work ("I can really keep at my career now, because when you're waitressing, you can end up on your feet for 10 or 12 intense hours"). And two, when a customer has finally pushed their luck too far, the sheer joy of food-tampering revenge. Griffin cackles with raspy glee at the thought. "I've sent quite a few doggie bags home with some nasty extra things in ‘em! And I, uh, did some ‘other' things during my waitress years that I'm, uh, not too proud of. But you know what?" She suddenly brightens. "I was just thinking the other day about how glad I am that I took that job, because I really, ‘really' learned a lot!" -=-end-=- Seeya! -=-Larry-=- From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Mon Jul 6 19:24:26 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id TAA12944 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Mon, 6 Jul 1998 19:23:42 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <199807062323.TAA12944@smoe.org> From: JessBartn@aol.com Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 11:31:21 EDT To: mad-mission@smoe.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: PattyG-News: MM: Ann Arbor News CD Review Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi guys, here's a review article I found in the Ann Arbor news. Anyway, here's the article ------ >>"Flaming Red" **** <---4 stars out of 5 It's almost impossible to believe this is the same Patty Griffin who released 1996's well received disc of demos, "Living with Ghosts." One listen to the scorching title track that opens this album sets the record straight, though. Griffin can rock with the best of them. And if her voice occasionally recalls Bonnie Raitt ("One Big Love") or Ricke Lee Jones ("Go Now"), her keen melodic sensibilities set her apart. Lyrically provocative, musically resilient cuts like the tragic tale "Tony," the upper-octave-soaring "Goodbye" and the layered, rythmically pulsating "Christina" showcase a major writer who's making the most of her chance to shine. She will be following Mary Arden Collins who is GREAT!!! You must get there early to check her out, too. Trust me when I say it's well worth it. Mary and her band will take the stage at approximately 2:30. The gates open at 1:00 for the whole thing so get there as early as possible. It should be pretty crowded. Unfortunately, Griffin left the sessions midway, admitting she lacked the confidence and experience it would have taken to add "bandleader" to her resume. A&M eventually agreed with Griffin's instincts and released her original solo acoustic demos as 1996's Living With Ghosts -- a sparse, but thoroughly stirring, set of strum 'n' sing anthems. As debuts go, it was a stunning and appropriate introduction to this rare singer/songwriter who could actually do both. Griffin went on to nicely fill the Lilith nation's acoustic niche without the help of radio, so there was little reason for fans, or perhaps even A&M, to anticipate anything other than an acoustic follow-up. But now, it appears all of the glowing press for Living With Ghosts and Griffin's growing live fanbase gave her the studio poise she lacked. For the folk purists who adopted Griffin, Flaming Red will be as disturbing as Dylan at Newport. It's not just electric, but is also, at times, downright heavy. And throughout, for better or worse, it's far more commercially accessible than Griffin fans could have expected. >From the start, Griffin makes no effort to hide her makeover/evolution. In fact, the title track starts with a drum-stick count-off and swirling dual guitar line, only to introduce a harp riff so fast that it doubles as a Public Enemy-style siren. But vocally, Griffin is unfazed by the speed -- the phrasing is just as loose and vibrant as her acoustic work, only more energetic. And it's only the start of a brilliantly diverse four-song run that's sequenced ever-so-carefully to cover alternative ("Flaming Red"), AAA ("One Big Love"), rock ("Tony"), and Top 40 radio ("Change"). But, to her credit, none of the record's genre-jumps or scream to whisper vocal transitions seem forced. Griffin's unlocked confidence has clearly ushered in a sense of dynamism as well. And yet, for all the vocal subtleties buried within Griffin's pretty pop ("Christina") and casual country ("Mary"), a pair of raw rockers ("Tony" and "Wiggley Fingers") are undeniably Flaming Red's centerpieces. Because for as good as Griffin's Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt impressions may be, Flaming Red proves she does a better Patti Smith. First, by asking "Hey Tony, what's so good about dying," Griffin creates a compelling narrative around a gay high school student and delivers his story with both measured anger and obvious compassion. And while she spends the first half of the songs setting listeners up for an all-too-obvious retelling of Pearl Jam's "Jeremy," Griffin's anti-hero winds up killing himself, not his classmates. And that's lucky for Griffin, because she admits "I hated every day of high school/Funny I guess you did too/It's funny how I never knew/There I was sitting right behind you." Better yet, she gets even more introspective and decidedly more playful on "Wiggley Fingers," a bloozy tribute to carnality that unabashedly declares "I love to feel the little wiggley/I love the dirty little wiggley." But as singularly dumb and sexy as that chorus might be, it nonetheless hangs on Griffin's best hook to date -- a programmed semi-industrial sequence that drops out just long enough for a screaming Janis Joplin-style closing. Ultimately, whether Griffin's sulking or screaming, Flaming Red's overall victory doesn't so much actually hinge on electric vs. acoustic, tender folk vs. radio accessibility, or focus vs. diversity. Instead, the album find its beauty in a voice, a few rough edges and a batch of above average songs -- the exact formula that made Living with Ghosts so attractive the first time around. And in that, it's damn near the ultimate sophomore record. Apparently, all it took was a little confidence. -- Andy Langer ******** * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/pattyg/pattyg.htm * * Rachel Martin's Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive is at * http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/patty.html * * Jerry Zigmont's Flaming Red - A Patty Griffin Website is at * http://w3.nai.net/~zigmont * * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Tue Jul 14 15:46:35 1998 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id PAA04766 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Tue, 14 Jul 1998 15:46:11 -0400 (EDT) From: CornflkGl@aol.com Received: from CornflkGl@aol.com by imo25.mx.aol.com (IMOv14_b1.1) id SFLYa07259 for ; Tue, 14 Jul 1998 14:37:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <3699e70a.35aba587@aol.com> Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 14:37:58 EDT To: mad-mission@smoe.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Subject: PattyG-News: MM: FR "Album of the Week" in People Mag. Some fans complain that last year's all-woman Lilith Fair tour lacked the raw energy of supposedly more aggressive male power groups. This year's Lilith tour promises to be more diverse, with performers like Missy Elliot and Bonnie Raitt adding hip hop and electric blues to the mix. And for high volume, hormone-driven rock and roll, count on Lilith sophomore Patty Griffin, a diminuitive singer-songwriter from Maine who, as this album featuring powerhouse rock drummer Kenny Aronoff and producer guitarist Jay Joyce shows, has made an abrupt about-face from her 1996 acoustic CD Living With Ghosts. Even when Griffin rocks her hardest, however, her crystal voice commands the high ground. And she never allows the sound to drown out the lyrics of these 13 well-crafted songs, which include an aching memorial for a long-dead friend, as well as several topical tunes. Among the latter : a song about an ostracized gay schoolboy's suicide and another about the romantic problems of the late Christina Onassis. Things slow considerably toward the end of the album, but the opening title track, about a defiantly carnal young girl's love for her red pumps, is an irresistible rocker sure to galvanize Lilith's legions. Bottom Line : A folkie plugs in, and the effect is often electrifying.
