Patty looked amazing- she wore high, high heels, a sort of pencil skirt and a leather belted jacket ensemble that was evocative of a song siren from mid-20th century, but also chic and of-the-moment. She was so joyous and in command, she infused the evening with a wonderful energy. The Mountain Winery venue, for those who don't know it, is a special place. Situated high up on a mountain, it requires a trip up a twisty road to get there. From the parking lot, there is an amazing view of "Silicon Valley", out to the bay. The small, outdoor amphitheater is intimate and expansive at the same time. We had a beautiful night for the concert- not too hot, not too cool, with clear views. Patty sang many of my favorites- Forgiveness, Useless Desires, It Don't Come Easy. In some ways, it was hard to sink into the moment and just enjoy her performance because so many of her songs have become personal touchstones for me. I had to struggle not to sing along with her- I'm so used to belting out her lyrics in the privacy of my home or car, whenever I'm discouraged or lost ( I successfully resisted- knowing that everyone else had come to hear Patty sing, not me! ). Her songs have helped me make decisions, and face life. I listened to Useless Desires over and over again when I was making the decision to relocate from New England to California and often have had the thought that she must have been following me around- so closely do her lyrics chronicle my own life. I think other devotees of her music feel the same way on occasion. I think that is Patty's greatest strength- as a lyricist, she writes about the heroic in everyday life. Of course the incandescent voice, the strong technical ability on guitar and piano, the beautiful melodies and compelling harmonic structure, plus her wonderful rapport with fellow musicians on stage all combine to create something magical. But always, underlying it all, her lyrics inspire me to keep trying, to keep working to become a better person. I saw Patty perform in Santa Cruz back in March. I was in a good mood for two months following that performance. I had brought some of my friends to that concert, and again tonight gathered some of my favorite people for the event. I feel like I don't do enough for the important people in my life, and thought that taking them to this concert would be a way to do something nice for them. I think everyone from my group enjoyed the concert. Different friends found resonance in different songs, even though they were not very familiar with Patty's music. One of my friends told me that she always starts crying during Burgundy Shoes, without fully understanding why the song moves her so. Another turned to me after Patty performed Stay on the Ride, and said, "What do you think of the old man? That's me. I'm the old man." In some ways, I enjoyed the unfamiliar songs she performed the most. She opened with the Sam Cooke song Get Yourself Another Fool, and also did a song by Billy Joe Shaver and a Bessie Smith song. I love to hear Patty demonstrate her command of various American musical idioms and when she covers songs by other performers she just inhabits their music and the sensibilities behind it. I think the highlight of the show was when she sang the MLK song. It was such a perfect venue for that song- way up in the hills. Doug Lancio accompanied her singing on guitar. I was delighted to hear an alternative version to the piano arrangement on Children Running Through. I just wanted to share some of my thoughts and my deep appreciation for what Patty does. I strongly encourage all of you to try and see her live, if she is coming to a venue anywhere near you. In this disjointed world, Patty brings it all together for me. Courtney
