Thieves absconded with four solar panels, damaging the support brackets in their haste to leave the scene, leaving the Masai of Sukenia high and dry. The solar panels are an integral part of the Sukenia water system, which supplies water to the 3,000 residents and their livestock. Without the solar panels, there is no water. Not to worry, however. It turns out that every available Masai Warrior, and nearly every able-bodied clansperson quickly mobilized in search of the solar panel hijackers. Their search took them across the local plains and mountains, and even across the border into Kenya before the miscreants were apprehended. Some of you may be curious as to what justice was dealt by the spear wielding Masai. Rest assured that the offending parties were hauled in-front of the proper authorities and will be held responsible for most of the damages plus a fine. The ClearWater Team will be stopping by Sukenia on our upcoming expedition in early September to help the authorities assess the damage, and more importantly to make sure it all gets back into working order, so the water will continue to flow with as little interruption as possible. We suspect that the damages will cost more to fix than the apprehended Masai can afford to pay. If you would like to help with repairs to this project, and to support others like it, please go to: http://www.clearwaterproject.org/donations.html. Our return expedition could not come at a better time to help get this system back on line. Hi All, Now for something that I'm excited about and have been looking forward to for some time. Please read on. When socializing at various Jewel concerts and related events over the years, I've been fortunate to personally meet and talk to thousands of you. Much to my enjoyment, these conversations inevitably drift to "other music," a topic I'm always passionate about. I'm constantly asked about what other artists I'm currently listening to or recommend. Without hesitation, I usually bring up one incredible artist, who has consistently knocked me out since I first had the pleasure of listening to her perform - Patty Griffin. My first exposure to Patty was during the summer of 1996, when she was invited to open the now legendary private fan concert, Jewelstock, in Bearsville, NY, prior to Jewel's tour supporting Neil Young. Like everyone else in the room, I was immediately captivated by Patty's distinctively haunting voice, both powerful and pure, and was fascinated by many (if not all!) of her thought-provoking songs. At the end of this very memorable night, Jewel herself remarked to the captivated audience, how incredible Patty was and questioned her own worthiness of having Patty open for her - a strong compliment indeed. After catching Patty numerous times over the proceeding years and countless listens to her albums "Living With Ghosts" and "Flaming Red," not to mention her absolutely scorching performance of "Cain" on the Lilith Fair CD, it became obvious to me that Patty is one of those extremely rare talents whose songwriting and recordings are not only emotionally gripping, but that even in a stark acoustic framework, they continue to reveal increasing depth with every listen. To me, this is the ultimate in what I look for in music and Patty rarely fails to deliver. With her new album, "1000 Kisses," recently released on Dave Matthews' ATO Records, garnering rave reviews from longtime fans, musicians and critics alike, Patty is now finally poised to connect with a larger audience and it's about time! We are pleased to announce Patty Griffin as our newest Guest Artist at Jewel's site and personally invite you to learn more about her and experience this music for yourself. To access this new feature from the www.jeweljk.com home page, click "favorites" on the lower menu. This will bring you to our newest Guest Artist feature. Click Patty's picture and you're in. (Note: There is an issue preventing some Internet Explorer browsers from access. This will be fixed soon. Netscape, AOL and most IE browsers should work fine.) This feature can also direct you to the best web locations to further educate yourself about Patty. If you've yet to investigate this area of Jewel's web site, we highly recommend that you do. After checking out Patty's feature, spend some time in our guest artist archive. You'll discover many other great artists, both emerging and established, who might not get the media attention they deserve, but are nonetheless, extremely worthy of your attention. When we first began our jeweljk.com "guest artist" features several years ago, I personally wanted to feature Patty immediately, but was unable to work out logistics until now. Our thanks to Patty's team at Vector Management for helping us to make this happen. If like me, you are also looking for passion, intensity and depth in music, look no further - Patty Griffin delivers, as her voice wraps itself around your heart. -MrBB ******************************************** Now Playing: Patty Griffin - "1000 Kisses" ******************************************** Jewel concert information, radio and TV scheduling updates available 24 hours a day at: http://jeweljk.com/low/calendar.html ******************************************** --- You can help a friend subscribe by having them send a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com To view selected back issues of JeweLink, please visit the JeweLink Archive at the www.jeweljk.com calendar page. First, the ticket stuff. No specifics have been outlined yet but basically what it is is that they, in her words "generally hold 50 tix for each show and if the show is reserved they tend to be some of the best seats in the house". She also said: >I have contacted Vector Management and our label heads here >(Patty is on ATO Records as you know which is related to Musictoday and Red >Light Management) and no one seems to have a solid fan club list. This is >where I am hoping you and I can work together. {snip} > so we can inform you guys about on-sales >and upcoming shows and where to get her tickets. So, what is going to happen is when they have any news regarding this, they will send it on to me and I'll post it to the list and the news version of this list. Hopefully it will all be in place by the time her next tours/mini-tours occur. As for the news from Vector....some of this is probably old news to you all, some of it is new I am certain.....I haven't been keeping up with a lot of the shows/dates etc as she's never anywhere's near me so I don't get too excited when I read posts about new shows being scheduled, so I am sorry for any of this that is "old news"..... They are working on getting 1000 Kisses released in the UK and if that comes to be Patty will probably be going over there for some touring in late November. So, for all you Brits who have been writing me asking when Patty will be leaving "the colonies" and touring in England, here ya go! Get your fellow Brits to buy the CD(s) and sell out her UK shows! The next single is "Chief" and it has been released and it was "the #2 most added record this week", whatever exactly that means. I have an idea but I am sure it's not totally right. Also, they have confirmed Patty appearances at festivals in Louisville KY on 9/22 and in Austin, TX on 9/28. She will also be taping a television special with The Chieftans in Nashville at the Ryman on 9/20 along with other artists who were on the Chieftans latest album. (old news?) In early November they are holding open some dates for a possible series of benefit concerts for the "Landmine Free World" project. Stay tuned. Prior to that they are working on another run of shows up the west-coast in late October. Stay tuned for that one too. Also, they have taken note of the recent Silver Bell conversations and the talk about compensations to Patty for her work on Silver Bell. Interscope would probably frown upon Vector and/or ATO getting money for a CD they technically and legally own, and they (Vector) are happy to see that a better idea has surfaced and that being that the best way to support Patty is to buy and convince others to buy the albums that have been commercially released. Patty of course receives royalties from sales of those (more royalties from the ATO release) and, in their words.... "the more she sells the more her star rises in the eyes of the folks that run record companies and the more likely it is that "Silver Bell" will see the light of day with all the artwork, pomp and circumstance it deserves." They also wanted me to tell you that they very much appreciate the continued support and kind wishes.
