The text of it: Patty Griffin, 1000 Kisses: (3.5 stars of 4) The tokens of affection Griffin offers on her latest outing may be delicate, but they're hardly demure. Sharp edges and dark shadows emerge in these spare, deceptively gentle ballads, which the singer/songwriter and co-producer Doug Lancio recorded at Lancio's home studio in Nashville. New songs such as Rain and Nobody's Crying are so ripe with unfulfilled longing that it's no surprise when Griffin opts to cover Bruce Springsteen's plaintive Stolen Car and drives it home forcefully. Even the slighter material provides a winning showcase for Griffin's classic country-folk voice, an achingly pure soprano that suggests a tangier Emmylou Harris. It's not likely that the haunted, understated passion in these Kisses will seduce many pop radio programmers, but that's their loss. - Elysa Gardner You can read it and other Cd reviews online at http://www.usatoday.com/life/lear.htm Mike From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Tue Apr 9 20:24:37 2002 Received: from smoe.org (ident-user@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.2/8.12.2) with ESMTP id g3A0ObVU017380 for ; Tue, 9 Apr 2002 20:24:37 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.2/8.12.2/Submit) id g3A0Oae8017371 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Tue, 9 Apr 2002 20:24:36 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pronetisp.net (mail.pronetisp.net [12.23.44.4]) by smoe.org (8.12.2/8.12.2) with SMTP id g3A0OYVU017340 for ; Tue, 9 Apr 2002 20:24:34 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 11492 invoked from network); 10 Apr 2002 00:15:28 -0000 Received: from dialin-bing13-245.pronetisp.net (HELO oemcomputer.aol.com) (12.96.182.245) by 0 with SMTP; 10 Apr 2002 00:15:28 -0000 Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.2.20020409201341.00a3b020@127.0.0.1> X-Sender: ducksoup/pop.pronetisp.net@127.0.0.1 X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1 Date: Tue, 09 Apr 2002 20:26:48 -0400 To: mad-mission@smoe.org, mad-mission-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: PattyG-News: 1000 Kisses review in Entertainment Weekly magazine Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk On page 76 of the newest Entertainment Weekly magazine (#648, April 12 issue, Star Wars/Natalie Portman/Hayden Christensen on cover) there is a picture of Patty (captioned "Pretty in Pink, but her disc is kind of blue") and a review of 1000 Kisses. Signed on the basis of her barebones demo tape, she had already tried recording the album twice with two different prominent producers, but both times the label sent her back to the studio. "I was kind of devastated by the whole thing," admits Griffin from her home in Nashville, "so I told them, `You like the demos so much, then why don't you just release them.'" To Griffin's surprise, the label did just that, releasing the rough disc almost as is. "That was the last time that really happened, as far as the major label thing goes," she says with a rueful laugh. A much-buzzed-about artist made even hotter with her 1998 disc "Flaming Red," Griffin suddenly found herself stuck in a frustrating major label limbo that lasted nearly four years. "It was recorded in 2000," she says of her still unreleased third album, "Silver Bell," fourth if you include an earlier unreleased disc recorded around the time of "Living With Ghosts." "It was accepted by the label that I ended up on after the first corporate takeover," Griffin says. "Then the label was bought again, and I ended up with a new regime, and they told me that they did not like the record at all. My manager figured out a nice way to get me out of there without owing a lot of money." A common theme Griffin's story is not unique, especially at a time when major labels seem increasingly desperate for coffer-filling hits. "By the time the artist finally lands a label, they end up signing so much away, because they come from such a vulnerable place," Griffin notes of the kind of draconian major-label contracts that often ironically prevent artists from releasing records at all. "Every musician I know knows somebody who suffers from clinical depression, or knows someone who committed suicide, that had to deal with major labels. It's just a problem of respect and honoring the person and what they're trying to express." Freed from her contact, Griffin was one of the lucky ones, but the rejection still stung. "The sad part for me is that the dream is kind of dead," she says with a sigh. "I grew up listening to artists that recorded on A&M records and Capitol records and Columbia records, and those labels just don't exist anymore, at least not in the way that I sort of dreamed that they did when I was a kid. That's the only part of it that's hugely disillusioning. But it's just a little bump in the road, and it's turning out really well for me now." Griffin's unlikely savior came in the form of Dave Matthews. After sharing an Austin City Limits stage with her, Matthews offered to sign Griffin to his new ATO label. "I didn't really want to talk to anyone until I made the record," concedes Griffin, "but after I finished it last summer, the ATO people came out to some shows and still seemed very enthusiastic. They didn't have that cynical `kill me' quality that you sometimes get from people who've been in this business for a little too long. So I went with my gut and decided to go with ATO." Anything would be better than her previous situation, but Griffin is still surprised by ATO's refreshing attitude. "I feel a lot more comfortable there," she says, relieved. "They welcome me exploring different things, different avenues. On a major label, the editing machine in my brain was going crazy, because I was always getting negative feedback. As opposed to, `Wow, we really like this song!' I feel more creative around them." Griffin recorded her new, mostly acoustic album "1000 Kisses" with her own money, much of it earned after such high-profile acts as Emmylou Harris, the Dixie Chicks and even Bette Midler started covering her songs. "I was very lucky from the publishing end," Griffin says. "I didn't have to go and tour incessantly. In those years that I was held up, I got to rest a little bit thanks to people picking up my songs. Plus, it's nice that other people who are talented would even consider doing that." The singles scene Griffin actually found the vicarious exposure to contemporary country music politics amusing. "They're all looking for singles. Nobody knows what that is, but they sure know what it's not!" she says. "It's an interesting little game, but I'm glad I'm not involved." With her label travails behind her and the support of her songwriter friends by her side, Griffin is excited about finally hitting the road again. She performs Wednesday night at Park West and earlier that day will sing and sign CDs at the Borders bookstore at 830 N. Michigan Ave. "It's been a while since I've got to do my own thing," she says. According to Patty and the band, tonight was the official first stop on the tour. The other shows that they have played thus far were considered a "preview/press" tour. That is why the shows/sets were so short. Anyway, Michael Fracasso opened the show, and he played a very good set despite all the troubles he had with his floor mic. Michael's set lasted for about 45 minutes. After his set, Patty and the band graced the stage, and the crowd went nuts. Doug Lancio seemed to enjoy the interaction that he was getting from the crowd. At one point in the show, he raised his guitar over his head, and the crowd went wild. As for Patty's performance, she had a very good night. She didn't really cut loose till her screw up in Be Careful. She had to stop the song, retune her guitar, and start the song again. She said that we need to have fun tonight, and it just helps to have your guitar in tune. She was very cute about the whole situation. After that moment, she seemed to really relax and cut loose. Her solo performances of "You Never Get What You Want" and "Poor Man's House" were great! The crowd sang along for several of the songs, and it was just a good night. There is so much to share about this show, but I really need to get some sleep. I will write more later. Ohh! By the way, ATO Records has merchandise at the shows now. There are two t-shirts and a tanktop as well as Patty's and Michael's CD's. The CD's are $13, and the shirts are $15 and $20 if I remember correctly. The shirts just have the album artwork or a variation of it. They said that they will be getting more merchandise put together as the tour progresses. Well, I am off to bed. Take care and have a good day tomorrow. - Sanders P.S.- I will have picture from this show posted at the following url sometime tomorrow afternoon: http://www.dtpx.com/photography/pattygriffin.04162002/ Night night... P.P.S.- Michael Ramos, Patty's keyboardist, said that Patty and the band will be on the West Coast the last week of May and the first week of June. Mark your calendars! Plus, the cities who got "preview" tour dates will more than likely be getting another performance from Patty down the road. Just thought I would share that bit of info... It's an apt description. Though her work has been consistently splendid, she has had to travel along some treacherous paths to get her albums released. Her third disc, "1,000 Kisses'' (ATO), which arrived in stores Tuesday, features all of Griffin's hallmarks: finely wrought tales of compelling characters, emotionally charged vocals and memorable melodies. While her first two albums consisted solely of original songs, Griffin breaks the pattern here. In addition to the traditional song "Tomorrow Night,'' she also covers the Spanish-language standard "Mil Besos,'' which, via an English translation, provides the album's title. Griffin also delivers a brutally austere rendition of Bruce Springsteen's 1980 ballad "Stolen Car.'' Interviewed during a tour stop last week in Boston, Griffin described her decision to include other artists' songs. "In my mind, I'm first and foremost a singer,'' she said. "I've been singing other people's songs my whole life. There are certain places you can go--through the melodic ideas and lyrical ideas that other people present--which I just don't get to naturally. The space and simplicity of 'Stolen Car' are difficult things to achieve in songwriting. It's just wonderful to get to sing something like that.'' Tonight, her tour brings her to the Park West (she also will do an in-store performance at 12:30 p.m. today at Borders, 830 N. Michigan). In concert, she will be joined by three backing musicians who carry sparkling resumes: longtime guitarist Doug Lancio (who played with Steve Earle and Nanci Griffith), keyboardist Michael Ramos (Joe Ely, Paul Simon) and cellist Brian Standefer (Alejandro Escovedo). Griffin's own songwriting has landed her some high-powered fans. Her work has been recorded by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Bette Midler and the Dixie Chicks, who had a huge hit with "Let Him Fly.'' Hefty royalty checks, combined with touring, have allowed the 38-year-old Griffin to make a comfortable living. Still, the native of Old Town, Maine, would like to raise her profile. With a self-deprecating laugh, she admitted, "It would be nice to sell some records.'' In the mid-1990s, Griffin was signed to the major label A&M on the basis of a spare, soulful demo tape. At the label's request, she recorded a high-budget debut, but staffers "hated'' it. Dejected and exhausted, Griffin asked A&M to release her solo acoustic demos as the finished album. The result was the critically acclaimed 1996 gem "Living With Ghosts.'' Griffin eventually established a great rapport with A&M, which released her textured, full-band album "Flaming Red'' in 1998. Around this time, the label entered a chaotic period of corporate reshuffling, which hindered the marketing of her second disc. More bad luck came when Polygram, parent label of A&M, merged with Universal, effectively eliminating A&M. In 2000, Griffin recorded another album, "Silver Bell,'' but it remains unreleased. She has since parted ways with Universal, leaving that album in legal limbo. The disc contains "The Top of the World,'' which is one of Griffin's finest works and a highlight of her concerts. After these ordeals, it's easy to see why Griffin would be drawn to ATO, an artist-friendly label run by singer Dave Matthews that includes David Gray, Gov't Mule and Chris Whitley on its roster. Griffin is ecstatic about her new label and remains clear-eyed about her experience with Universal. "The money that's being output there is so enormous that there's just no room for risk-taking or artist development. There's no possibility for it. They need their little test marketers and that sort of thing. I don't know what it's like to be under the weight of that [amount of] debt, so I couldn't say that I wouldn't be acting the same way that they're acting.'' By Daniel Menaker Posted Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at 12:51 PM PT Songwriters often say that they don't know where their works come from, that they seem to come from outside themselves. In any given interview you might hear Bono, Alanis Morissette, Gillian Welch, or John Hiatt say so. Last week I talked to the accomplished and idiosyncratic country/pop/folk/whatever singer/songwriter Patty Griffinon the day before the release of her third CD, 1000 Kisses (ATO Records)and she was insistent on this very point: that there is something bigger than just herself involved in writing her songs. For a long time, these kinds of artistic disavowals struck me as coy, or merely attempts at modesty, or, conversely, grandiose claims of divine or spiritual inspiration. Or as an effort to inject interest and connectedness into a process that is often lonely, tedious, frustrating, heartbreaking, and unsuccessful. But recently, with 40 years' worth of listening and editing and writing experience perhaps reaching a critical mass, I've come to realize that most people who make this sort of artist-savant claim actually believe and mean exactly what they say. Griffin is a good case in point. Like many songwriters (her work has been covered by the likes of Emmylou Harris and the Dixie Chicks), she sometimes starts with the musicwith a phrase or a bit of melody, with a guitar riffand the words come later. But when they do, "they seem to come from nowhere," she says"they just sort of pop out." At other times, she simply sits and makes silly rhymes. "For 20 minutes or a half an hour I'll just make nonsense rhymes or just rhymes about my dog," she says. "And then serious ones begin to happen." Songwriting can be a physical discipline for her, as well. "Often I have to move my body in a certain way, like exercising, to begin to get into the right rhythm for writing a song." When she said this, she moved her shoulders around in a swimming kind of way, to show what she meant. (Onstage, when she isn't playing the guitar, Griffin's arms become anemonelike, tentacular, in a distinctive, wavy style; from far awayas when I saw her open for the Dixie Chicks at Radio City Music Hall a while back, and, before that, for Harris at the Beacon Theater in New Yorkthese movements look mannered, but closer up, they seemed entirely natural.) Her lyrics, which often repeat themselves in repeated musical phrases, are trancelike, as wellas if the author were in some way possessed. In "Mary," an anthemic three-chord song whose words appear to marry Jesus' mother and Mary Magdalene and Everywoman, from Griffin's second CD, she sings: Mary, You're covered in roses You're covered in ashes You're covered in rain You're covered in babies, You're covered in slashes, You're covered in wilderness, You're covered in stains. And from the new CD, in "Be Careful," another three- or four-chorder, similarly poignant about the general lot of women: "Be careful how you bend me/ Be careful where you send me/ Careful how you end me ..." This chorus is preceded by haunting and even more incantational verses that are essentially lists of women in different attitudes and situations ("All the girls on the telephone/ All the girls sitting all alone " etc.). It's not surprising that Griffin and many others like her honestly feel in the grip of something "beyond" themselves, feel "inspired" (a word whose root means "breathe in," as the oracle breathed in psychoactive fumes at Delphi), when they are writing music. These creative experiences have a long, grand tradition and literature. (Plato, an early proponent of this idea, says that "all good poets, epic as well as lyric, composed their beautiful poems not by art but because they are inspired and possessed.") What did come as something of a surprise to me in our conversation was the vehemence of Griffin's resistance to the possibility that she and she alone is responsible for her music. When I said I thought that "inspiration" might actually not be anything mystical but just the unconscious, creative right brain delivering artifacts to the conscious left hemisphere, she not only disagreed but seemed upset about the notion. "There has be something more than that," she said. "The mystery is beyond that. The fact that you're writing about experiences you've never had shows that. I mean, sometimes the whole room alters when I'm writing a song." Part of Griffin's unwillingness to take full authorial credit for her work may have to do with the fact that she appears to be a truly self-effacing person, and she has known hard times: a bad marriage, six years of waitressing at Pizzeria Uno in Boston, classic record-industry horror stories. She is one of seven children, was born in Old Town, Maine, and is from a family that has had to work hard for a living. She has lived and feels keenly the lot of the marginal, especially working-class women and outcasts of various kinds. Her songs reflect often these concerns: "Tony," about a gay boy in high school "with breasts like a girl" who commits suicide; "Making Pies," on the new CD, about a bakery worker who does the same tedious job every day in order to make a living; the quasi-feminist songs "Mary" and "Be Careful"; Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car"; "Chief," on the new CD, about a nonfunctional Native American Army vet; etc. When she talks about these songs, it's clear that she wants them to express, in their lyrical way, the suffering associated with broad social problems. She says, for example: "There's an imbalance when if a woman goes out for a walk at 3 in the morning and something happens to her it was somehow her fault, and with a man that's not true." So it makes sense that she would believe so passionately that she is somehow channeling these elegiac, quasi-protest songs. She needs to believe that she is being spoken through, and may fear that taking the creditbeing a musical auteurwill undermine what she sees as a sort of mission. In a limited way, she's wrong, as every other artist and Plato are when they assert that the human artist is the instrument of some greater force. Unless the person involved is one of the many plagiarists at large these days, he and he alone made the work. But in a broader way she's quite right. The brain is, from one way of looking at it, the receptaclethe vesselfor all kinds of information, data, stimuli from the outside world, and, often without any intellectual plan, the mind of the artist will synthesize and structure and give emotional depth to some portion of these stimuli, will chew them up, and spit out art. In that way the artist is an instrument after allan instrument played by the inchoate world around him. Yahoo! First off, I posted some of my pics: http://www.pattygriffin.net/Images/042102.html One of the coolest things was all of the people I met - I love it when people are friendly and approach me!!!! I met quite a few of you out there - Lori, David T., Ed, Jeff, Kate P (finally), Brad, etc. Saw some old pals, Don, Sarah, Eugene and Debbie. I'm sure there were more.... The audience was packed of old fans and new, young and old. I sat next to David's young daughter (was she about 3?) at the in-store - what a cutie!!! I'm really bad at reviews. Patty was on her game more than ever. She was talkative and comfortable on stage despite being extremely sleepy at the in-store. Yes its true!! We got Nobody's Crying.. and it was most incredible. Has to be in the top 10 moments of my life ever :-) I was completely captivated the entire evening and was left pretty speechless for a while after the show. I had a chance to speak with the whole crew - Doug, Brian, and Michael (both of them). Chatted with the tour manager a bit too about the pattygriffin.net site. The best part was when I spoke with Patty at the in-store and she said that she was so glad to finally meet me!!!! yay!!! man... talk about making my day 1000 times better than it already was! For those who have been wondering where the updates have been on the site, they are coming soon!! I had my final presentation this afternoon so I'm done till the fall! I'll get the site back in order over the next week. I've got tons of goodies to add including a transcript from David Hall of his interview with Patty on april 4th. Patty did Acoustic Cafe here this afternoon but since we don't get it (even though it's taped here) - i'm not sure if/when it aired. From what I gather they air on Sundays.... anyone know anything about it? Flaming red hair down & flowing , & blood red necklace pendant & lipstick against her pale white skin. The contrast conjured up a few lines from Don McLean's "Vincent" , that I checked out when I got home. "A silver thorn , a bloody rose , lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow. " Great song , that I'm listening to on repeat as I write. If that wasn't contrast enough , she was wearing a black , v-neck , satiny dress with sheer , puffy shoulders , & a leather or satiny half-sleeve that extended from the top of her thumb to a little more than halfway up her right forearm. Being a man , I'm not aware of the subtle nuances of color that women are , so I can't say if it was funereal black , for "Long Ride Home" , or the color that ex-lister Paul once described as "obey me" black : ) Set list: Making Pies Chief Long Ride Home Be Careful Rain Flaming Red / Patty & Doug You Never Get What You Want / solo Poor Man's House / solo Nobody's Crying Tony Ruby's Arms Mad Mission Mary Encore Mil Besos Top of the World Let Him Fly Ballad of Hollis Brown OK ! I was wrong ! After chipping away as much of the calcification around my mind as I could , & divorcing myself from my infatuation with Patty's ending on TOTW , I admit that TOTW is as good a song as any for Doug to exhibit his considerable skills. I was actually looking forward to his solo at the end , & was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as long , or quite as good as the Chicago version. I imagine that when you have a guitar player with Doug's ability , if he doesn't have the occasional opportunity to display it , he would feel stifled. Patty broke a string on "Chief" , & discussed her frustration with the many problems she was having ; breaking a string on the 2nd song , bad hair , wrinkly dress , etc. Fortunately , she knew the source of her problems - "Mercury in retrograde " That damn Mercury ! It's almost as bad as Saturn on the cusp : ) She had a problem with a capo later , & just threw it down on the floor with disdain , & picked up another. That'll show the cursed fates they can't defeat her : ) The first 5 songs were excellent , with "Be Careful" & "Rain" standing out for me. Michael was on the piano for "Rain" , & it seemed too loud at first , but when I narrowed my focus on the vocals , it didn't seem to interfere. The music on both songs was as good , or better , than ever. "Flaming Red" was top-notch , with Doug doing his best work on it yet , including the creative use of feedback at the end. When Doug left the stage after FR , there was a loud OW ! that came from the wings. Patty looked , & we all wondered , but it remains a mystery. Guess it was just a little backstage horseplay. Patty's 2 song solo set was outstanding as usual. She discussed how depressing it's getting to put on the TV or read the news b/c of all the war & turmoil in the world , & said she thought that she should be playing her next song more often , & went into "Nobody's Crying" Now there's some good news that helps balance out all the bad for me. Great version , which , as the music director ( I think ) who introduced her suggested , " Transports one to a better place" Patty seems to be changing the endings on a number of her songs ; the high voice at the end of FR , the whispery one at the end of YNGWYW , & now doing a whispery , scat-like ending on "Tony". "Ruby's Arms" seems to capture me more strongly each time I hear it. Hearing that song is like discovering Patty all over again. It seems like it was made for her unique voice & vocal abilities. Thank you , Tom Waits ! I don't know if it was the superior acoustics at Calvin , or that I was just too lazy to focus at Headliner's but the music didn't seem to interfere with the quiet vocals as it did there. I heard every whisper. Don't have any notes after "Tony" , so I guess "Ruby's Arms" left me dumbstruck. Everything else seemed to be up to Patty's super-high performance standards , & she ended with a new (for her ) Bob Dylan song , "Ballad of Hollis Brown". Great composition & lyrics , with outstanding vocals & music. Patty's choice of covers astounds me almost as much as her own compositions. Her musical sense is unrivalled in my eyes. A duo called Over the Rhine was the first opener , doing a short set. All of their talent seems to be manifested in the incredible voice of the female singer. Sade flitted across my mind early on , & Fiona jumped into it a few times later , but this woman had such a great voice , & abilities to go with it , that it made me wonder why I like Patty's so much better. Wasn't hard to figure out , once Patty started singing. The deep , rich , tonal quality , & the occasional achey-breaky melencholia sound that just captures the heart of anyone open to it. I had the same problem that I've had before with Patty , in that the piano distracted me from her vocals. I guess I'm just an anal purist who fells too territorial about great feminine vocals. I'll definitely remember Over the Rhine , & hope to catch them again sometime. Michael's set seemed to be stronger than any since Austin , in spite of the fact that he didn't do "Elizabeth Lee" , which has become my favorite. I hope it was just due to a shortened set b/c of the other opener. It might be that his set was more varied. A few of them had a lot of similar vocal & guitar rhythms that gave me a sense of sameness. Michael has a level of talent where I think it won't take much to break through to big time. Hope I have time to do Cleveland & Ann Arbor before I leave for the next leg. Don't know how Patty & the band does it. All I have to do is show up , & it's wearing me out. The Louisville show ended around midnight , I think , & they had to travel 300 miles & get to the in-store in Chicago at 12:30. No way I was going to make it. I got my sleep & made it to the concert. The review wasn't online so I typed it here myself. Any "typos" are mine. Take care, Will Griffin's take on life's trials, delays? Keep playin' good tunes by John Sinkevics jsinkevics@gr-press.com Patty Griffin was left a bit speechless, stringless and temporarily guitarless Friday on a visit to Calvin College. Reluctant or too shy to give a speech about her writing to Calvin College students earlier in the day, the singer-songwriter instead took to the stage Friday night to showcase material from her latest album "1,000 Kisses" But even that didn't come without some considerable hitches. The concert at Calvin's Fine Arts Center was delayed by nearly 20 minutes because bands were late in arriving, and the tardy sound checks kept the near-sellout crowd of 1,100 waiting outside until nearly 9 p.m. And with two opening acts--Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler of Over the Rhine, followed by guitarist-singer Michael Fracasso--and a 20-minute intermission, Griffin and band didn't even take the stage until 10:37 p.m. Then, two songs into her set, Griffin broke a string on her acoustic guitar, forcing her lead guitarist , Doug Lancio, to rush backstage and restring the instrument. A few songs later, a guitar strap slipped, almost sending Griffin's guitar to the stage floor. As frustrating as the delays may have been for audience members, it didn't seem to faze Griffin, who spent much of her 90-minute concert cheerfully showcasing her newest songs. Just 10 days after releasing her third album, "1,000 Kisses" and two years since her last honest-to-goodness tour, Griffin, 38, rolled into Grand Rapids with her three piece band in tow--Lancio on guitar, Michael Ramos on accordian and keyboards, and Brian Standefer on cello--and that new CD fresh on her mind. The first five set selections were songs many in the audience had never heard before, including a standout version of "Rain," which may display the Austin, Texas-based singer's powerful vocal range as impressively as anything in her repertoire. Standefer's cello work in particular proved the perfect complement to that voice on moodier songs such as "Rain" and "Tony," a haunting song from Griffin's second album "Flaming Red," about a boy who commits suicide. And while she failed to play favorites such as "Change" and "Moses" from earlier albums, Griffin did unveil inventive live renditions of tricky tunes such as "Flaming Red" (a near punk piece performed without a drummer, go figure) and "Mary" (a moving tribute of sorts to Jesus' mother), marked by a dynamic singing voice that can soar from a whisper to a loud burst in the space of a single phrase. But other glitches contributed to a less than satisfying evening. Unflattering lighting that bathed the entire stage in white light detracted mightily from performances by both opening acts and the problems didn't seem to get corrected until long after Griffin swung into her set. And while Fracasso, who also hails from Austin these days and has been touring with Griffin, boasts a terrific voice, his Chris Isaak-meets-Bob Dylan approach begged for stronger melodies and shorter songs for an audience unfamiliar with his material. Still a duet with Griffin, whose harmonies were dead-on perfect, perked up his set, giving audience members a tantalizing taste of what they would hear next from Griffin and her band---even if it all took more time, and more guitar strings, than expected. Jen , Ed , & I were sitting in the warm Irish pub , O'Neil's , when we decided to check every 15 minutes to see if the line was starting. Jen was anxious to be first. At 5:00 , we checked for the first time , & there were 4 people waiting already. By the time we got out there , we ended up being about 20th in line. Another tribute to the power of Patty & her music. Doors didn't open till 7 , and IT WAS COLD !! Ed & I made one stop back in the pub for some Cinnamon schnapps , also called firewater. I had a light jacket & short sleeve shirt on b/c it was almost 90 degrees when I left Pgh 6 days earlier. Fortunately , lister Pam just couldn't stand to see me shivering , & due to her maternal , protective instincts , INSISTED on putting her downy coat around my shoulders , while I watched HER shiver. What a gem that Pam is : ) Set list: Mil Besos Chief Rain Long Ride Home Making Pies Stolen Car Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House / solo You Never Get What You Want Ballad of Hollis Brown Ruby's Arms Be Careful Mad Mission Nobody's Crying Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Sweet Lorraine Mary The opening songs were changed a bit with "Mil Besos" opening , & "Making Pies" moved from first to 5th. I think "Mil Besos" works better if it's done after the crowd is warmed up , but it was up to the usual standard. "Stolen Car" & "Flaming Red" were excellent , but during FR , I got the impression that Patty was a little fatigued from the tour. She mentioned at one point during the set that Doug had that "I need a day off look". I imagine they all needed one by then. All I have to do is show up , & I sure needed one. When she did YNGWYW it seemed to me that she was tired , b/c it didn't have the energy level I saw in previous versions. I 'm sure the rest of the audience didn't notice though , b/c it was still a very high-energy performance. I was concerned that the rest of the set might be affected , but Patty bounced right back for "Ballad of Hollis Brown" . Vocals , & music , especially Doug on the guitar were outstanding. Best version of the song in it's short history with Patty & the ensemble. Next up ; "Ruby's Arms". I live for that song since I first heard it. "Be Careful" & "Mad Mission" were fine. Then , in another moment that seemed to be indicative of fatigue , Patty said it was great that the fans came out on a Saturday night. Same thing I heard in Cleveland the night before : ) Fortunately , I was familiar with Patty's introduction to "Nobody's Crying" , so I could give Jen early warning , & she wouldn't geek out too much. She seems to be as captured by it , as I am by RA. It's also one of my favorites , & it was as good a version as I've heard. Again , the encore was anticlimactic after RA & NC , but they were fine. Met too many listers to mention on the trip. Mainly b/c I was around Jen as they all flocked to her. I was heartened by the number who said they like my narrative reviews , so I'll take the naysayers with a grain of salt , & continue on. Too long , and/or too critical , quite a few have said. My name's on every one , so they DO have the delete option. And for those who want to live in their "100 % wonderful" world , I would suggest that Barney the Dinosaur , & the Teletubbies are still available on TV. The doors were open ! Went in & Patty & the band were doing sound check. No one seemed disturbed by my presence , & if I were more anonymous , I probably would have tried to take a seat , but I think Patty & the band might be tired of seeing me all the time. I know what it's like to have someone up your ass every time you turn around , & it's not pleasant. I stood near the door for awhile , but felt like I was spying , so I left & had dinner. Met Mark & Priscilla as soon as we got in. We did a lot of talking , so I don't have a lot of notes. Set list: Making Pies Chief Rain Long Ride Home Be Careful Flaming Red / Patty & Doug You Never Get What You Want / solo Poor Man's House / solo Ballad of Hollis Brown Tony Mad Mission Ruby's Arms Mil Besos Sweet Lorraine Encore Tomorrow Night Let Him Fly Top of the World To be honest , the only strong memory I have of the set , was when I got off of my bar stool , & headed for a closer spot when Patty went into "Ruby's Arms". That song just grows stronger every time I hear it. Cleveland doesn't seem to be a strong town for Patty. The Odean had a balcony , but didn't open it. I think it was the smallest crowd yet in a venue that wasn't sold out.Read a review that panned Cleveland b/c a 3 time Grammy winner was treated rudely by a small inebriated crowd at another venue. They were slow to warm up to Patty , but by the time she hit her solo set , they were all into it. I have to leave soon , so I can't sit here hoping the memories start flowing. I felt compelled to offer a ride to Mark & Priscilla when they spent their cab money on a Patty poster , in spite of it being cold & windy , & they not being dressed for it. Quite a tribute to the power of Patty & her music.
