In my still-dreaming state (something frustrating about Cocoa Pebbles) it struck me that my recording device was actually in Murfreesboro and there was no way I could get it in time to do the interview. My Plan B was a near disaster, the dreaded conversation killer - the speaker phone. My $12 phone made Griffin sound like she had recorded all of her answers onto an old, well-worn cassette from an analog answering machine and transmitted them over AM radio, which was then shot out through a dusty, broken speaker with a short in it. In other words, it sounded like Tom Waits produced the interview. Luckily you couldn't meet a more understanding person than Patty Griffin. She has the proverbial patience of a saint. And she's needed that and then some to endure the last few taxing years of her career. In 1998, her sophomore album, Flaming Red, was released on A&M. Produced by Nashvillian Jay Joyce, Flaming Red was an unstoppable force from the first track that waylaid anyone lucky enough to step into its sonic path. The reason it didn't become the multi-platinum smash everyone knew it deserved to be was the gargantuan Universal/Polygram merger, which basically shuttered the doors of Griffin's label and handed her fate over to a new group of people who had no real stake in her career. "They definitely dropped the ball on that record," Griffin acknowledges. "I can't really be upset about it anymore because my life is just fine. I don't know what would have happened to it commercially had they been in place as a label the way they were for Living With Ghosts. But beyond that, things work out the way they're gonna work out. There's no right or wrong to it, so it's dumb to be upset about it." In the ensuing period, the label sent Griffin into the studio and badgered her for something resembling a commercial single. It was a tactic that didn't exactly work with Griffin's songwriting style. "The joyfulness of songwriting went by the wayside for awhile under the big label experience," Griffin confesses. "You keep turning in these things from your heart and they go 'Ahhhh, we just don't hear a single' (laughs). You just feel like you're from another planet. You don't know what you're doing on this (planet) or how you ended up here. It was a bummer trying to work with them and write songs, because they definitely have a different idea of what a great song is than I do." The album she recorded then, Silver Bell, was shelved. Hopefully it will re-emerge someday, if for no other reason than to have a recorded version of the live favorite Top of the World. Her new album on ATO Records, 1000 Kisses, is the Living With Ghosts acoustic yin to Flaming Red's rockin' yang. Logistically, it came about in a similar fashion as Flaming Red, with Griffin hunkering down in the home studio of a hot-shot Nashville guitarist/producer. This time it was her longtime road buddy Doug Lancio. "Doug was here in town last year for SXSW playing with somebody else," Griffin recalls, "And he had said 'You should just come to Nashville and play music in my basement and forget all about this s--t,' which was the very same week Interscope and I parted ways. So I called Doug up and asked him how he'd feel about co-producing something." The result was 1000 Kisses, a stripped-down and extremely intimate album. While most of it was recorded in an East Nashville basement, it sounds more like Griffin is sitting alone on a desolate front porch facing the stars, the empty fields and the relentless abyss of the night. Like many of her songs before, most of the material on 1000 Kisses is wounded and melancholy, but, as usual, there is a hopefulness - if not in the lyrics, then in Griffin's voice, which sounds on the verge of being defeated but still holding on. It is an unforgivable shame that Griffin is still a relative underdog in the music business when they are giving out Grammys to people who have half her talent, but maybe with 1000 Kisses, more people will have the opportunity to hear her soul-shattering voice. - Jason Moon Wilkins
