This notice just came today. Patty in Sedona again! I was going anyway- Jackson Browne and Patty are my two ultimate faves- well, Catie Curtis and Garnet Rogers make four faves. This will be the third time I have seen Patty in Sedona- an absolutely awesome venue! I'll write again if I hear any more! I hope more MM folks make it- last year Don and Jen made it and we met for dinner as well as at the concert. This trip is well worth a major effort to make it. This will be my 4th year. They take their music seriously there , as evidenced by a sign OUTSIDE the auditorium that read ; "Quiet please , concert in progress". I had taken my vow of silence before I went in , which was easy to keep for the most part , b/c I wasn't with anyone , & didn't strike up any pre-show conversations. However , I had to let loose with one "Patty Griffin ! " , after "Stolen Car". (the only such outburst during either act , although there was a lot of cheering & whistling) .Set list : Poor Man's House Falling Down Flaming Red Chief Stolen Car Florida Truth # 2 Mary w/Emmylou With Emmylou My Baby Needs a Shepherd One Big Love Their mini-bio described Patty's voice as stunning & evocative. Evocative is as good a one word description of Patty's singing as exists. The depth of her singing voice evokes a deep response in those open to it. Patty's performance as an opener , matched or exceeded any other I've seen. And since the folks at Interlochen take their music seriously , she got a bigger response than I've ever seen her get as an opener. The audience just kept cheering & clapping as though she were going to come out for an encore. Considering that her friend & supporter Emmylou could have allowed & encouraged her to do so , I thought it was possible , but no such luck. I'm sure though , that Patty enjoys opening for the more appreciative audiences she finds with Emmylou , rather than the mostly disinterested lot at the Chix shows. She also drew a surprisingly large , & enthusiastic response of whistling & cheering when she came out. They must know great music at Interlochen. It was a treat to hear "Falling Down" live. I'm not sure if I ever heard it live before. It didn't seem to have the depth & power of the version I have on Rarities or LFML , but it was excellent. I imagine that the earlier version was b/c she was a lot closer in time , to the emotions that inspired it. I had the feeling that it was a little short , & wondered if she skipped any verses. Doug's playing seemed supportive for the most part. As usual their dual playing on "Truth # 2" & "Chief" , between vocals , was the best of the set. He was excellent on "Flaming Red". In spite of the fact that "Stolen Car" was good enough to make me break my vow of silence , it wasn't as good as the Rams Head version , after which , I recall saying , "take me now Lord , I'm ready to go ! ". Her vocals were a bit shy of that depth , & instead of the lingering notes that Doug played then , he was a little faster , with more notes. Again , I noticed a disparity between Patty's singing with Emmylou & vice-versa. When Patty was singing during Emmylou's set , she seemed subdued & supportive. When Emmylou was singing on "Mary" , I noticed once , for about 3 notes , that her volume was noticeably lower than Patty's , & I thought it sounded good - supportive rather than competitive. No sooner did I think that , than Emmylou drew her mike closer , & killed the moment. Emmylou's music had been growing on me a little more each time I saw her , but I think it shrunk a bit this time. I don't know if it's me or them , but most non-Patty acts have been giving me a feeling of sameness in their presentions. I got that again from Emmylou at Interlochen. Emmylou has a great voice , & she has the ability to go from high , powerful notes to throaty whispers w/o losing anything on the way. She seemed to do it so often though , that I had the sense she was consciously using it as a "method" instead of having it happen spontaneously as the song flowed from her. My favorite by her was conspicuously absent at Interlochen & Atlanta. At Atlanta she & the band did a song a capella that was the best of the set. Unfortunately , I went to have a drink , & a smoke with a few others , & missed most of it while we were "loud-mouth yapping". It was good enough to keep catching my attention while we were talking. I was looking forward to catching it at Interlochen , but she didn't do that either. She did a song that seemed to be titled "Water from a Deeper Well" that appeared to be an excellent folk-type song if it were done straightforward & slightly subdued , but between vocals , the band was playing like they were competing with Led Zeppelin for rock supremacy. The highlight of the set was a great version of "Love Hurts" , with Buddy Miller joining in harmony for most or all of the song , and their guitars being the only instrumentation. Although I don't think that it was her greatest show , I still consider her to be a large part of the attraction when Patty opens for her. I had mixed feelings about reporting this , b/c I felt like I was spying. After considering it , it seems harmless enough , & I'm sure Patty's fans will enjoy it. The soundman was offstage , stage left. I was sitting close , stage right , so I could see him. Near the end of Emmylou's set , when she was playing an upbeat song , he started doing this move that looked a cross between a squat & a bow , with arms outstretched. I noticed Patty talking to him , then she started doing the same thing. Then a third person joined in , & then a fourth for awhile. I couldn't tell if Doug was one of them , but I could tell Patty from that distance. They did that for awhile , alternately moving up & down opposite each other (one moving up while the other moved down). Then they started doing different moves. At one point , Patty was doing "The Swim" , one of the many odd dances that came out after the "Twist" craze in the '60s. Then she went into arm movements that reminded me of the Hula. Very fluid & graceful. Anyway , she seemed to be in such a good mood that I don't think she wrote any "dark & tragic" songs that night. I have Patty to thank for rekindling my interest in , & focus on , great music again. It was a great 5 hour ride home from Ann Arbor. I listened to Patty a lot on the ride up , but coming back , went to "Thick as a Brick" as usual , with Airplane's great "Bark" album replacing my usual Yes & Peter , Paul , & Mary. I probably replayed it 3 or 4 times. These lines "rang true & glowed like burnin' coal" (from Dylan's "Tangled up in Blue" ) , as I heard them. Well now what is going to happen now is anybody's guess If I can't spend my time with love I guess I need a rest Time is getting late now and the sun is getting low My body's getting tired of carryin' another's load And sunshine's waiting for me a little further down the road Jorma Kaukonen "Third Week in the Chelsea" Performed by Jefferson Airplane Don From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Mon Aug 20 20:48:17 2001 Received: from smoe.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16) with ESMTP id f7L0mGlj014489 for ; Mon, 20 Aug 2001 20:48:16 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.0.Beta16/8.12.0.Beta16/submit) id f7L0mDdu014486 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Mon, 20 Aug 2001 20:48:13 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200108210048.f7L0mDdu014486@smoe.org> From: Jynx419@aol.com Date: Mon, 20 Aug 2001 14:00:14 EDT Subject: PattyG-News: Patty at The Ark To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi everyone :), This is my first attempt at a post. I hope it works. I saw Patty for the first time at The Ark in Ann Arbor on Friday. She was amazing! Her voice seems to just flow from her. But I'm preaching to the choir here. Anyway... Patty had on a shimmery grey top and a black skirt. The skirt looked like maybe a fan handpainted it for her. It had a painted Mary near the bottom and I think there were roses surrounding her. Black boots topped (bottomed?) the outfit. Patty played two acoustics, a Gibson and I'm not sure of the other one. Doug played an electric Fender, a mandolin and I think a dobro too. Here's the set list: 1 Carry Me 2 Poor Man's House 3 Perfect White Girls 4 Mad Mission 5 Change 6 Florida 7 Rain - Patty said it will be on her next album, hopefully out next year entitled 1,000 Kisses 8 Chief 9 Falling Down (unsure of title here) 10 Flaming Red 11 Bend Me or Be Careful With Me (again, unsure of title) 12 Goodbye 13 Top of the World 14 Mary Encore 15 Sweet Lorraine 16 Tomorrow Night 17 10 Million Miles - Patty said this song was for all of us :). All the songs were great. The one that really stood out for me was the bluesy, sexy version of Flaming Red. Made me want to get my acoustic and just SANG (that's sing for all the stellar spellers out there)! I also cried during Goodbye. Having lost someone I loved dearly a few years ago, those lyrics really touch me. What struck me most about Patty is how sweet and shy she is onstage. She thanked us after every song. She thanked us for hanging in there even without any new music to be had. She broke a string and Doug took her guitar backstage to string it up. She joked that she had one of the best guitarists in Nashville and she had him doubling as a guitar tech. She also teased Doug a bit. Then she mentioned that she came from a family of 7 children and the girls were always torturing the brothers. She told us that's all men really want is to be tortured. Patty talked to some members of the audience. A man shouted out that he wanted to bear her children. She said something to the effect that thanks to George W. that just may be possible with cloning. Then she said, "But I never get involved with politics." After seeing Patty live, I'm left feeling even hungrier for more of her music. Here's hoping that 1,000 Kisses will be available soon! So that's my first ever review. I hope it was worth a read. Pamela S.
