You can see it on the web here: http://www.nashvillerage.com/music/features/053101-griffin/ Or just read the copy and pasted version below. Very sad, indeed. I want to hear Silver Bell, but more than that, I want Patty to have a label that gives her the attention she deserves. On a happier note though... I'll be seeing her in just a few days time. :) -Misty published: 31 MAY 01 - The Rage Will 'Silver Bell' Ever Ring Fiery singer-songwriter Patty Griffin headlines Dancin' in the District with Cricket There will be better times and places for fans of music to complain about the corporatization of the music business. Volumes can and should be written about how these huge multinational companies, for whom music is, at best, a sideline business, have bit by bit lowered the lowest common denominator to the point where they've entered into bidding wars over the opportunity to put pre-teen kids into studios, latch their voices to pre-produced "music" and create the next "superstar" (read: bottom-line enhancement vehicle). There's another time for that discussion. We're here to discuss a different tragedy. We're not going to get to hear a new Patty Griffin record any time soon. Despite having a critically lauded second album, despite coming off a heralded slot opening for one of the hottest acts in the industry, and despite repeated rescheduling of the release of the follow-up project, Griffin's now-former record label came to the conclusion all artists dread - that they "didn't hear a single" - and decided to shelve the project, titled Silver Bell. And the really sad thing? She's been through pretty much the same situation already. Griffin's debut recording, Living With Ghosts, was originally intended to sound very different than it turned out. A demo set of acoustic recordings of the songs on Ghosts got Griffin her deal with A&M Records back in 1996. She went into the studio with a producer and a band and kicked out an electrified version, at which point the Powers That Be at A&M kicked it back and refused to release it. "I was really devastated by that and couldn't imagine making another [record] at that point because I was really very into this one," Griffin told me in a 1998 interview for Citysearch.com. "I was just a little too bummed out to try to make another one, so I said 'If you like the demos so much, let's put them out,' and they were cool with that. That's how I ended up being acoustic in everybody's eyes. "I think what the label was concerned about was that it was dark, that the performances were not bright, while the acoustic performances were very straightforward and cut right through," Griffin said. "I listened to that record [recently] for the first time in a long time, and you know what? It's not nearly as bad as I thought from the way they were talking about it." Griffin got to make the record she wanted two years later with Flaming Red, an out-and-out rock project on which she teamed with Nashville producer/guitarist Jay Joyce. The songs were in-your-face both musically and topically, with tracks like Tony, Change and Mary making you think as much as Wiggley Fingers, Blue Sky and the title track make you rock out. Flaming Red caught the attention of folks outside the Triple A and rock worlds, as well. Among those who took notice were members of the Dixie Chicks, who covered Let Him Fly, from Ghosts, on their multiplatinum disc Fly, and tapped Griffin as the opening act for most of their 2000 tour. "It's very rare that I come across a CD that I just wear out, and I've worn her records out. All three of us have," said Dixie Chick Martie Seidel in a June 2000 interview with MusicCountry.com. "If I have a fan come up to me and ask, 'What do you listen to?,' I would say 'Go out and buy Flaming Red.'" The timing for Griffin's next career move seemed to have been perfect. Big tour in front of a music-loving audience followed by a new project helmed by Joyce with Griffin's road-tested band equals the next big step forward, right? Not according to the new Powers That Be at Griffin's label, Interscope (where she had been shuffled after the demise of A&M in 1998 in the creation of Universal Music Group). First, they pushed back Silver Bell's release from October 2000 (on the tail end of the Chicks' tour) to January 2001. Then they pushed it to March 2001. Finally they canned it altogether. The widespread rumor at the time was that Griffin was told the album lacked commercially viable singles, and that she should start over with a new producer and new band. Angry and frustrated with Interscope's actions, Griffin asked for and received a release from the label, but without the masters to Silver Bell. Griffin turned away requests for an interview, with representatives from her management company saying it was even difficult for them to talk with the singer-songwriter about the latest turns in her career. But having been put in this position before and coming out on the other side indicates that Patty Griffin will be able to bounce back from what certain facets of the music industry have put her through. - Lucas Hendrickson From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Thu Jun 7 17:03:02 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id RAA15156 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Thu, 7 Jun 2001 17:02:53 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200106072102.RAA15156@smoe.org> From: MistyBC@aol.com Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 10:14:34 EDT Subject: PattyG-News: Show at 6 Degrees Review To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all. After eating breakfast and getting ready, I realized that I woke up an hour early. Don't you hate that? But it means I have time to post a little review of last night's show. First, a description of this place in is order. It is a trendy, industrial style architecture, make-your-food-look-like-art-on-a-plate type of place. They weeded most of the city's Patty Griffin fans out by making it so expensive to get in. But I'll have to admit I was expecting snotty waitresses and people who came, not to see Patty, but to be at a see-and-be-seen event. Not the case... The staff was super super helpful and courteous and the crowd seemed to love Patty almost as much as I do. :) She came on stage around 9:45, starting off with "We Are Water." Wow. I won't post a setlist because I didn't write one down, I'll leave that to Don and anyone else who was there. But the highlights for me were: 1. My favorite trumpet playing chanteuse on stage with Patty Griffin... When Patty said that the song was about her dream of Marilyn Monroe being reincarnated as a trumpet player, I had this gut feeling that Kami Lyle would show up. Well, that's partly because Julie and I had seen her a few minutes beforehand by the bar holding her trumpet. But that didn't make it any less exciting for me. Two of my all-time favorites on stage together, even though, musically, they have very little in common. It was a bittersweet moment realizing that these two extremely talented women have the support of the music community but somehow lost their record deals. Not fair. But I have faith in both to bounce back and make something even greater out of their experiences. 2. To make number one not sound so depressing, Patty DID mention a new record. She said she was in Nashville recording last month and that the new album title is "A Thousand Kisses." She did not say what label would release it or when it would be released but the main thing is that she's not giving up. 3. A new song called "Rain" that she wrote about 3 months of raining in Austin, TX after a long dry period. Beautiful.... 4. Emmylou harmonizing with Patty on "Mary"... I've heard them sing it together before but it was better last night for some reason. 5. Watching Patty mess up the chords and tunings on a few songs. She was just so cute about it. She said "I'm too old to be this nervous." She seemed to be more comfortable when Doug "I'm going to change his name to Dougie" Lancio was accompanying her. 6. The encore: "Stolen Car", "Top of the World", and "Poor Man's House"... Awesome. All in all, a great night. Thanks to Don for making it interesting and helping two poor college girls out. See you at tonight's show! -Misty From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Sat Jun 9 18:50:14 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id SAA05264 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Sat, 9 Jun 2001 18:49:56 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200106092249.SAA05264@smoe.org> From: lwtaylor@ziggycom.net Date: Sat, 09 Jun 2001 15:38:22 -0500 Subject: PattyG-News: setlist from nashville show To: Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Just in case you're wondering.. Here's patty's too-short setlist from the dancin' in the district show in Nashville on 6-7-01. 1. Clap Hands (from "a thousand faces") 2. Flaming Red 3. Tony 4. Poor Man's House (by herself) 5. Be Careful with Me (by herself, from "a thousand faces") 6. Sweet Lorraine (started out by herself, then w/ band) 7. Chief (a GREAT new song, from "a thousand faces") 8. Top of the World (from "silver bell") 9. Mary (Encore) 10. Blue Sky 11. Tomorrow Night (bob dylan cover, w/ Kami Lyle on trumpet) That's it! she was great, but her band was lacking.. I think it was just because she hasn't toured in a while. It just wasn't very tight, and as far as her band goes, I enjoyed the uptown mix show last september so much more.. But hey, that's just me. -lt From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Mon Jun 18 21:20:03 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id VAA03767 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Mon, 18 Jun 2001 21:19:25 -0400 (EDT) Received: from pronetisp.net (mail.pronetisp.net [12.23.44.4]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-jane) with SMTP id VAA03758 for ; Mon, 18 Jun 2001 21:19:18 -0400 (EDT) Received: (qmail 21609 invoked from network); 19 Jun 2001 01:20:23 -0000 Received: from dialin-bing13-197.pronetisp.net (HELO oemcomputer.aol.com) (12.96.182.197) by mail.pronetisp.net with SMTP; 19 Jun 2001 01:20:23 -0000 Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.2.20010618212029.00a235a0@pop.pronetisp.net> X-Sender: ducksoup@pop.pronetisp.net X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1 Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 21:22:32 -0400 To: mad-mission@smoe.org, mad-mission-news@smoe.org From: Mike Connell Subject: PattyG-News: A thank you (and some news confirmations) from Patty's management Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi all :-) I just got an email from Patty's management. They've been kinda busy and stuff, so it took a while for any confirming information to come this way. First and foremost, they want to thank Scubagrrl@aol.com for bringing the Ebay situation with a Patty video to their attention, and the post from Jen Caputo regarding the response she got back from Ebay's customer support. They contacted Ebay and got the auction on the item taken off the web site! Three cheers for Scuba and Jen!! :-) They also said ". It's really nice to see how protective and well informed Patty's fans are when it comes to artists' rights." Next, and this is obvious by what I've conveyed thus far, Patty is still with Vector Management even though she and A&M/Interscope parted ways amicably. While Interscope does indeed own the rights to Silver Bell, they still hope it may released someday. :-) As far as the new CD (A Thousand Kisses) that Patty is working on, they've "had interest from several labels, but have not accepted any of the offers so far". Their best guess as to a possible release date would be in the beginning of 2002. While most (if not all) of the scheduled concert dates have been posted here thus far, here's what they fed me: 7/25 - Atlanta, GA - Chastain Park (opening for Emmylou) 7/29 - Alexandria, VA - Birchmere 7/30 - Annapolis, MD - Ram's Head 8/16 - Interlochen, MI - Kresge Auditorium (opening for Emmylou) 8/17 - Ann Arbor, MI - The Ark I think they all have been posted already, but I hope at least one is new news :-) They said a show or two might be added, but Patty does not planning on doing much touring until the new record is released. Sounds like she's taking advantage of the plus side of all of this (I guess we can call this the plus side) and relaxing at home, writing songs and just recharging her batteries and enjoying life outside of the touring & related stuff of the last few years. Atta girl :-) Rest up Patty, ya deserve it :-) If somehow this passes your way, _please_ make sure ya schedule a show in central New York State again :-) I am sure Styleen in Syracuse would LOVE to have you at her club again. I phoned her and told you when you mentioned in the one chat last year that Styleens' Rhythm Palace was your favorite venue of the past few years :-) That's all folks :-) Mike :-) * The Patty Griffin/Mad-Mission@smoe List Homepage is at: * http://www.quackquack.net/pattyg * * Rachel Martin's Patty Griffin Lyrics Archive is at * http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3079/patty.html * * Jerry Zigmont's Flaming Red - A Patty Griffin Website is at * http://members.tripod.com/PattyGriffin * * Katie Peterson's Patty Griffin Guitar Tabs Archive is at * http://members.tripod.com/~Lifey/patty.html * * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL and/or AOL Instant Messenger From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Mon Jun 25 18:07:36 2001 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id SAA25248 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Mon, 25 Jun 2001 18:06:50 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200106252206.SAA25248@smoe.org> Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 14:03:09 -0500 Subject: PattyG-News: Some good Patty pictures...
