Tix on sale Oct 1($10) , through Oberlin box office , 440-775-8169. Oberlin is in northern Ohio , a little west of Cleveland & a little south of Lake Erie. See you there. The Nashville concert was excellent , until Patty went into her 3-song solo set. Then it got better , & reached that high performance level that I've come to expect at all of Patty's shows. Set list: *solo Carry Me Perfect White Girls Tony Flaming Red Little God Top of the World Change Truth # 2 Moses * Waiting for Superman * Poor Mans' House * Sweet Lorraine Silver Bell Blue Sky Go Now Mary Encore One More Girl Dream On One Big Love If this is not completely accurate , I'm going to blame it on "Happy Hour" at Chili's the afternoon of the concert, & the two-day delay in writing down my impressions. The audience was definitely up for Patty , & were very responsive throughout. Applause & shouts were very evident during "Flaming Red" & "Change". I didn't notice them much mid-song after that , as I became more engrossed myself. As I said , the concert was excellent before Patty's solos , but I thought that "Top of the World" had the same problem I mentioned in Winnipeg. One of Patty's more personal songs where her vocal intensity seems to fall off when she does it with the band. I think that song is built on her vocals , & anything beyond her own guitar playing is a distraction. Maybe the album version with her mother will prove me wrong. Things really picked up when she went into the solo set. On "Moses" & "Poor Mans' House" , she was at that very high vocal performance level that characterizes her as a great live act. "Waiting for Superman" was an excellent composition - music & lyrics. I was disappointed when I found out that I hadn't caught all of her introduction , & it was sung and/or written by a group called Flaming Lips. "Silver Bell" was very powerful. I don't think I've been that close to the stage when she did it with the band since they did it in Boston over a year ago. The next 3 three songs were the highlight of the concert for me. Unlike a lot of Patty fans , "Blue Sky" continues to be one of my favorites. I think it's a great composition , with great lyrics , and is the song that brings out the best performance from the band , especially the guitar & drums. And Patty seems to put on a great vocal performance w/o being too emotionally involved in the song. When they did it on Letterman , her facial expression was impassive throughout , & her eyes were moving around as though she was thinking of something else.I liked the Nashville version so much that I lost control & had to dance to it. Boogie down! After that came a rhythm & blues/jazz version of "Go Now". Very loosey-goosey , with a completely different tempo.Patty & the band were very relaxed , & having fun with the song. In spite of that , the music & vocals were very flowing , the way a great song is. Patty was dancing about the stage , just swingin' them hips like a hula dancer. I thought about asking her for a lei as a souvenir after the show , but for some reason , thought she might take it wrong & discarded the idea. As many times as Patty has done "Mary" , she always brings her best vocal/emotional intensity to it. The Nashville version had even more so than usual. She must have had a very special relationship with her grandmother. The encore was excellent also , of course , but was anti-climactic after those three. One thing worth remarking about , was her version of "Dream On". I've said before that Patty's choice of cover songs shows the same great musical sense as her own compositions , but what impresses me more , is that she usually matches or exceeds the performance that I'm familiar with. Not so with "Dream On". I can't say why for sure , I think she did a great job on it. It might have been that she didn't seem to reach for that scratchy , screamy , desperate sound near the end that Aerosmith got across. The 2 opening acts were also so good that I was thinking , (no wonder they call Nashville "Music City , U.S.A." ). First up was a band called Antonia. An excellent female s/s with a band to match. Josh Rouse kept up with very good compositions , vocals , & another top-notch band. His guitarist made some jaw- dropping sounds with an array of pedals & a gadget on his guitar that I also noticed on Doug's , but he used his a lot more. For those "mature" folks out there , the first chord he hit made me think of "Rumble" by Link Wray & The Wraymen from back in the late '50s or early '60s. With feedback , reverb , and a sound that reminded me of the plaintive , almost crying , guitar on "I'd Like to Change the World" by Ten Years After , he often dominated the music. I also hear that sound a little bit on "Let Him Fly". And I think it's George Harrison that uses it to great advantage on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". They were selling everyone's CDs after the show , & including the "Silver Bell" promo with each sale , so I guess the label is pretty commited to pushing Patty right into the new year.I got another copy of "Flaming Red" & gave it to a Patty fan who didn't have it yet , just to get a good copy of the promo.I wore "Standing" out by playing it for hours the first day I had it. Now it sounds like Snap , Crackle & Pop are her back-up band. Anybody know how I can get good tickets for her UK appearances with Emmylou ? : ) Thought a thought Then I forgot So I sang a happy song In my head In my head Patty Griffin "Flaming Red" Don From owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Sat Sep 16 17:51:23 2000 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id RAA13305 for mad-mission-news-outgoing; Sat, 16 Sep 2000 17:50:33 -0400 (EDT) From: Figgkara@aol.com Received: from Figgkara@aol.com by imo-r14.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v28.15.) id p.75.9b094c1 (4159) for ; Sat, 16 Sep 2000 16:50:48 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <75.9b094c1.26f53727@aol.com> Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2000 16:50:47 EDT Subject: PattyG-News: Austin City Limits taping To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Patty and the band were wonderful last night at the Austin City Limits taping. I am not sure when it will air (usually a few months after the taping) but it is definitely one to set your VCR's for. Song list (not exact, and not in order) included: One More Girl Tony - had to play it twice since Billy broke a snare Moses Sweet Lorraine Mother of God (?) - Patty playing piano - gorgeous song Blue Sky Superman - Flaming Lips song Flaming Red 2 other songs - both on her new album, of which i cannot remember the titles She looked amazingly comfortable. I am not sure if this is a product of her opening in stadiums for the Dixie Chicks, or just getting used to her fame. She wore a snake skin burnt orange dress, with black knee-high patent platform boots, and a studded black jean jacket with a lion on the back. She talked about the new album, Silver Bell, which will be coming out in January 2001. She has a new keyboardist...Michael Ramos. I am not sure when she got him, but I did see he was with the band at the surprise gig they did at the Speakeasy in Austin a few weeks ago. He is from Austin, too. To: mad-mission@smoe.org Sender: owner-mad-mission-news@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hey y'all! Thank you, Don, for that great review of the Nashville show! Although I wasn't able to get into the fenced area (it was for the 21+ people, grrr), I had a decent view of Patty and the sound wasn't bad at all. This concert was very, very special for me because.... I GOT TO HEAR PATTY ACOUSTIC! I've seen Patty three or four times, but they were all Patty w/ band. I have also never seen a FULL Patty concert, the longest one was 10 songs or so. AND, I had never heard Patty sing *any* LWG songs until this show. She didn't sing "Time Will Do the Talking" or "Forgiveness" (my two favorites), but I am definitely NOT complaining because she sang "Moses," "Poor Man's House," and "Sweet Lorraine." Wow. Really, there are no words. Patty sounds amazing with a band, but nothing compares to the hearing the songs in their rarest form, just Patty & guitar. My favorite moments of the show were: - The new jazzier "Go Now" - It's really cute and playful. - Truth #2 (did this one have the former name of "Swing Me"?) - A very cute country flavored song, sounds kinda Indigo-Girls-ish. My vote for the next MP3 of the week! - Waiting for Superman, the Flaming Lips song - How come I like the songs so much better when Patty sings them?! - Dream On, the Aerosmith song - WOW, does anyone have a tape of this? Very cool. - Silver Bell - What a rockin' song. Man. - All the LWG songs Oh yeah, and I have to admit I was a bit starstruck when Julie told me, "The Dixie Chicks are by the stage, did you know that?". Yeah, more than starstruck. I am kicking myself for not tackling the security guard to meet them, but you know... You can't beat yourself up over these things. Don, the limo was not the Chicks, I personally saw Martie driving them off in a black BMW. No, I'm really not a stalker. Anyway, I did get my picture taken with Patty, she was very gracious to pause for that. I do agree with the person who said that Patty is becoming more comfortable with her "celebrity." Not only on stage, but with her interactions with fans. She was nice enough to sign autographs for several minutes at the Tower Records booth, when it was clear she had visitors (ie the CHICKS!) waiting for her. One thing Don did not mention - Angelo (a prominent Nashville songwriter, and Patty's co-writer on "One Big Love") joined the band for the last song, "One Big Love." I was considering not going to this show because I couldn't get in, but I am *SO* glad that I did. I got to meet fellow MMer, Laura, even though I didn't see Cristina! :( And, Don, I didn't even know you were coming to the show! Btw, I'm working on that Chinese symbol on Patty's t-shirts. With such a great show in Nashville, I almost forgot to mention seeing Patty with the Chicks in Birmingham!! She was in great form and I think the audience was fairly receptive (although I have NEVER seen so many leopard print cowboy hats, snake skin pants, and skimpy tank tops... Someone needs to tell these girls that they ALL LOOK ALIKE!). Hearing Patty sing "Let Him Fly" on the couch with the Chicks was a beautiful moment. They obviously have so much respect and admiration for her as an artist. Yikes, this email is getting a bit long. OH, yes! Since I wasn't able to get into the Uptown Mix show, I gave my camera to a friend... And the pictures turned out pretty good! I also took a picture of Patty at the Tower booth, and it's quite cute. Go here to see the pics: http://www.mtsu.edu/~mbc2b/musicpics.html Smiles, Misty P.S. I heard "One Big Love" in the dressing room at TJ Maxx today.
