Okay, here's a freaking surprise. I actually have something Patty Griffin related that's not old news! I was emailing a friend of mine (also a Patty Griffin fan) and she recently went to see, and talk to, Jackson Browne. She's a huge fan of Jackson Browne and here's what she happened to mention....(oh, don't anyone say I'm violating her privacy or something...I already asked her and she said it was okay, so there). Anyway: I saw him in Jacksonville, and there was no recorded music playing before his show. I met him after the show, and one of my friends was making a suggestion about an artist she would like to see play at his annual benefit in Sedona. He was not really "in" to her suggestion, and asked the group in general who we would like to see, and of course I said "It would be fine with me if you had Patty Griffin with you at EVERY show"... Well, he absolutely LIT UP at that... He grinned from ear to ear and said "Yeah, she is just GREAT, isn't she?" Saw him again a few weeks later in Tampa, and guess what's playing??? LWG! He is obviously a big fan. Apparently, from the list posts on the JB list, he played it at several, (if not all) of the remaining shows on that leg of his tour. There was ALOT of discussion on the JB list about this "new" artist - Patty Griffin. Several people expressed the fact that they went out and bought her CD because of what they heard at the concerts, and then went on to post rave reviews. I can't wait for her new CD... >Jackson has been a fan of hers for a couple of years now, and does try to >promote her periodically... pretty cool huh? Speaking of pretty cool. Drinking and setting off explosives is cool. I enjoy this Fourth of July thing. I was over at my neighobor's pier helping him light these huge firework mortars up over the water. I didn't know fireworks that big could be legally purchased. I had a pina colada in one hand, and a margarita in the other. Hmmmm. Come to think of it, I probably didn't have a free hand to be much help. I guess I was there for the support. There's nothing more encouraging than a drunk going "yeah! Do it, man. Lemme do some! Whattaryou? chicken? Gimme the lighter! Gimme the lighter!" And for some reason I can't remember anything I did on Sunday...A total blank. But enough about that, Jackson Browne is a big fan of Patty Griffin. Naturally. I think there should be a Browne-Griffin concert tour. kick ass. Gotta go. you know. work here. peace love and vegetable rights, paul ************************************** * Petomane Thru-way??? Now what'll * * that asshole think of next? Great show. Just Patty and her big ol' Gibson. She always looks so tiny up there on the stage. This was her 3rd performance there, opening for Dwight Yoakam last year and the other time was ? The Backyard is an outdoor venue and it was still quite light outside when she began at 8:00. She said it was a little disconcerting to be able to see her audience so well. Anyway, we were pulling up at 8:00 and missed the first song. We had great seats though, on the 22nd row and the woman next to me even let me use her binoculars to get a better view. The set included, not in this order: Moses Top of the World Flaming Red Mary Poor Man's House Little God Change Tomorrow Night Truth #2 And one I missed The audience REALLY wanted an encore but I guess it wasn't an option since she was opening. We stuck around for Armatrading, but left during her 3rd song. She was pretty boring. Hubby said she should be opening for Patty. I love to hear stuff like this bc I turned him on to her and that is hard to do. Tom Waits is about as pop as he gets! I make so many mental notes when I anticipate a review , there's no chance of remembering all of them , & the longer I wait the less I remember. So I get the set list with major notes & hope I remember the important minor ones. What a difference from Winnipeg ! Patty & the band were a finely tuned unit last night , instead of a singer & 4 musicians trying to stay on the same page. The set list was very close to NYC , with "Carry Me" being dropped & "Sweet Lorraine" & "Tony" added: Sweet Lorraine Perfect White Girls Tony Flaming Red Top of the World Blue Sky Swing Me Mary Let Him Fly (With Chix) Patty came on the stage alone , & I thought she was going to go solo for a song or two , but after a minute or so of "Sweet Lorraine" , the rest of the band walked on. The accordion came in first , (Michael is still on keyboards) then the rest of the band. Doug played guitar with a definite country twang , & was excellent. I figured the rest of the set would be more "country-fied" too , but it was no moreso than Winnipeg. I think it was the best song of the set. The arrangement for "Perfect White Girls" was changed some again , with Frank's bass dominating , but Doug's guitar getting in some good licks too. "Flaming Red" used the slow open with the reverb on the guitar. It sounded good at the very beginning when the first few notes were widely separated and quieter , the effect was pronounced , but as the notes got closer & louder , the echoes overlapped & sounded like so much noise. "Swing Me" seemed to have the same arrangement as in Winnipeg with the fast tempo & more of a country sound , but it was much tighter & more polished. It sounds like they are in a good groove for the rest of the tour. I'm glad I stayed for "Let Him Fly" When I was in Winnipeg , I heard it start as I was leaving. I listened for a minute or two & didn't hear Patty so I left. I was disappointed when I heard that she joined them for it. Last night she opened the song solo , & she & Natalie alternated phrases , with them joining on some lines. I was too far from the stage to tell if the other two joined in. I didn't notice from the sound either. As I was listening to them alternate , it was a perfect time to compare voices , while Natalie's is definitely louder & stronger , I like Patty's natural tonal quality much more. When Natalie came in near the end , I thought it was Patty at first , when I realized it wasn't , I was sure that Natalie was trying to duplicate Patty's sound , because they weren't even close at the beginning. Every song was excellent , with Patty's vocals top-notch throughout , & the band's cohesion improving more & more with experience playing together. Definitely at or near the level in SF. I have to again give Patty a lot of credit for creative boldness. "Sweet Lorraine" , "Perfect White girls" & "Swing Me" were different songs last night than the ones I knew last year. Doug's guitar playing was unleashed enough for me to decide (with an absence of any kind of technical knowledge) that he's an excellent guitar player. He had a short , but bluesy & soulful solo on "Top of the World" , & a number of others along the way. He even got in a few licks that reminded me of "acid rock" , including some nicely placed feedback. The first time I saw Patty live was in Boston where he did some great feedback on "Little God". I asked the keyboard player if that was planned & he said no. Now I'm not so sure. His playing was also one of the facets of "Blue Sky" on Letterman that sent me to Boston to see her. On the subject of creative boldness , (are you tired yet ?) "Standing" on the promo is a gospel - dirge sounding song that's going to set her even farther apart from her peers in range of style. Not only that she does them , but she does them as well as the best performers in each genre. The venue was fine as far as the sound went , but the rest of it pretty much sucked. They only had screens on the stage. Not very big. The chicks used all three , but only one was on for Patty , & she wasn't on it. It showed only a Chinese character during her performance, that I imagine is the same one that's on her T-shirts(got one !). Your mad-mission for today , if you choose to accept it , is to find out what it means. When I was getting ready to leave , I went & stood near the exit , & was told that the only place I could stand was in front of my seat. The TVs in the perimeter weren't showing the concert. I'm sure they're on when there's a hockey game. Again , I have to give the Chix their due. Excellent musicians & performers. Natalie can really get that appealing country twang in her voice , & like Patty , seems comfortable in any range & style. Martie "gits" on that fiddle & Emily is definitely no slouch on the guitar. Nobody on that stage last night performed like it was just one more show in a long tour. Intensity & enthusiasm prevailed. Natalie is one bundle of bright energy. I'm going to look at the rest of the tour & see if I can find a city not too far away that isn't on sale yet , or has good tickets for the 2nd show. I'd like to get close for once. The worst thing about the show was that I couldn't see Patty's face or subtle movements. I forgot my binoculars. I realized on the way that Buffalo is the closest city I've visited to see Patty. The 200 miles seemed more like an excursion than a trip after the long drives I've made. Are you tired yet ? OK , I quit. Peace & music.
