"It's very rare that I come across a CD that I just wear out, and I've worn her record [Flaming Red] out. All three of us have. It's probably a selfish endeavor because we just admire her so much, and we don't think she's gotten the exposure she deserves," Martie says. "If I have a fan come up to me and ask, 'What do you listen to?', I would say 'Go out and buy Flaming Red.' I really believe that our fans are an extension of us in a lot of ways, and they come to our shows because we are doing what we like, so maybe they'll like what we like, too." Given the Chicks' penchant for choosing warmup acts with style and attitude, Griffin, dressed casually in a muscle shirt bearing the word, Memphis from which a black bra strap fell, fit the bill. And Griffin was every bit appreciative, dedicating the final song of her 40-minute set, Mary, to "the girls." Backed by a four-piece band, the singer-songwriter also treated the crowd to songs from her two previously released discs and a few from her forthcoming album. As for that shot with Patty on the edge of the swimming pool, that WAS taken by a photographer named Sam Jones during an L.A. photo shoot of "old funky motels", as they put it. (i.e. fitting in with the subject of "Silver Bell"). The swimming pool shot is being used by Interscope on a postcard that is being handed out at the Dixie Chicks shows and was sent out to some industry and retail folks. (I forgot....did Rich eventually post a URL with a scan of that photo?) As Rich said, the album is now scheduled for a September release, although no exact date has been set as of yet. At this time, it looks like the final sequence for the album will be the following songs: Little God Boston Perfect White Girls Truth #2 What You Are Silver Bell Driving Sooner Or Later Top Of The World Sorry And Sad Making Pies Mother Of God One More Girl Standing They also sent this disclaimer. "Naturally, the disclaimer is, as always, all this can change but its the truth for now" As for the Dixie Chicks tour they say "the Chicks dates are going great and Patty is being well received by their crowds. all seem well and happy. We have a new keyboard player on this tour. His name is Michael Ramos and he is from Austin. John Deaderick, who worked with Patty last year and played on the record is now working with the Dixie Chicks so we all still get to hang out with him." Schwartz(rschwartz@oeb.harvard.edu) I first heard Ellis Paul perform in the early '90s on the Boston coffeehouse circuit. He was opening for local folk phenom Patty Larkin, and he was late. Evidently there was some mixup about which night Ellis was to perform, so he jumped into his car and arrived on stage nearlybreathless. I saw something that night that I've rarely seen since. An "unknown" Ellis Paul played for a roomful of another artist's fans and had them mesmerized. He sang four or five songs, spinning his tales of people he's known or imagined, in that now famous hushed tenor. A song called "Angel," about a child dealing drugs from Paul's days as a social worker, still stands out in my memory. It was just one of those unforgettable nights. Who was Ellis Paul and where could I hear more from him? In the years since, Ellis Paul has become one of the top draws on the acoustic scene, pulling in fans from Boston, to Texas, to California. His finely honed songs tell stories filled with images that sparkle like jewels. His is a poet's heart, and a romantic's soul. He is an optimist who believes in people and possibilities. It is at a critical juncture in his career that Ellis Paul has released his first live recording, Ellis Paul Live. He has had early success, seen a marriage come and go, moved from Boston to Tennessee and back again. He has also been recognized by the powers that be in Hollywood with his song "The World Ain't Slowin' Down," performed live here, featured in the Farrelly brother's upcoming film, Me, Myself & Irene. Rounder Records has generously given us a double-CD recording which traces Paul's career from the early years through his latest offerings. The songs were recorded live at the Somerville Theater in Massachusetts, in front of a sold-out hometown crowd. The recording offers us two versions of Paul's early masterpiece, "Conversation With A Ghost." The first is a solo version with guitar and vocal. The second version features Patty Griffin's stellar accompanying vocals, giving this otherworldly song yet another layer of magic. It tells the tale of a woman, now dead, with whom the living are attempting to communicate. It's best to listen to it for yourself and come to your own conclusions. "Martyr's Lounge" is one of the seven previously unrecorded songs, finding a home here for the first time. It's a catchy pop/rock tune that could easily fit into radio's top forty with the right exposure. It's all about the bar in heaven, populated with the famous names of the recently departed, Jacques Cousteau, John Lennon and Kurt Cobain among them. Also featured here for the first time are three of Ellis Paul's spoken word pieces which are quite good, and fit in easily between the songs. But the real treat comes in the form of two stories, one describing a memorable trip on a small plane piloted by a Deadhead, and the second describing a certain singing transvestite in Manhattan. The stories reveal the playful, humorous side of the mostly serious Paul that we have heard on previous recordings. Ellis Paul Live is a stunning success. It captures the many facets of what makes Ellis Paul the sought after performer he is on stage. It's all here: the memorable, beautifully written songs, the poems filled with evocative images and metaphors, and the humorous stories behind the songs. For both fans and the uninitiated alike, this is the recording to get. Ellis Paul Live is a triumph. Edited by Mark O'Donnell Copyright 2000, Peterborough Folk Music Society and Roberta B. Schwartz. The weather was so hot, the hottest on record in SF history, and the crowd inside was obviously feeling the sultry effects of the day, in a club that doesn't have A/C...it felt more like Memphis or St. Louis than it ever does here, and it really set a mood. But everyone stayed there dripping sweat in the blazin' club as Patty hit us with an incredible, powerful set, completely beautiful and entirely emotionally received. The set list reads (could be corrections, this is from the printed copy): Carry Me Perfect White Girl Tony Flaming Red Drivin' Boston Top of the World just Patty: Poor Man's House " : Forgiveness " : a Springsteen cover - someone else will have to tell you the title. I wish I knew, it was rad, but I'm not familiar with 'is catalog. I was glad she mentioned how much respect she has for him! Little God Change Blue Sky Making Pies SOMEWHERE in here she did a new one that I loved "for all the girl singers here" that I think is called Just Another Girl - it was amazing. I'm sorry i don't know already what it's called Truth #2 then a special guest showed up, spotted in the audience earlier: Natalie Mayne from the Dixie Chicks (sp? I cheered her like crazy, I love her voice, and I think what they do is great) came up to do a beautiful rendition of... Mary Moses (this is where I get fuzzy. Guess the heat got to me. The set list has more songs on it, a few options for the encore, but I *think* it was Silver Bell and then finished with a cover called Tomorrow Night, that she mentioned was covered by Bob Dylan, but she couldn't remember the original artist...) And Frank (our hometown-boy SF weirdo on bass!) seemed to be very popular with everyone. Guitarist Doug (formerly of Iodine, it should be said) was excellent, and the band overall sound tight and ready for the world and a summer of shaking it up for those Dixie Chicks fans! Sorry to those who brought their M and M's...I bought some, but missed dinner and nervously ate them on the way over. We didn't know the start time was 8, so we missed the opening act. But I knew I was going to be lost in the show as soon as I got there and was afraid of meeting new people while I was a blubbering Patty-idiot! I didn't see anyone else's M & M's either...I didn't see anyone else I know except the staff - my friends don't know Patty's stuff and boy is it their loss. The crowd didn't look like a lot of people from inside the city, but it was a great mix - young girls up front singing along, middle aged guys dancing and smiling, women my age, and every age in between, all with rapt faces turned toward the angel on the stage. I'm sorry to be antisocial, but I couldn't even hang out with my husband either (he was up front crying the whole time, I'm told) - I was lost in the music! Such an amazing experience. A&M/Interscope just serviced a 5 track CD sampler featuring: Let Him Fly (from LWG) Tony (from Flaming Red) Silver Bell (title cut from upcoming release) Standing ("brand spanking new"..also on Silver Bell) Mary (live at The Mint in L.A.) Some of you may have seen these on eBay already. These are great little cds - all songs are full length and when you all hear Standing you will cry your little eyes out! It reminds me of a southern gospel song. Ok - well on our list is a guy who works for Island/Def Jams and is very generous. He has about 10 of these cds and he wants them to go to you guys. He's paying for postage and everything - I just need to supply him with some addresses. But wait! He also has 30-40 posters left over from the old flaming red promo days... and these posters aren't the little 12 X 16 posters we all saw in the record stores - these are about 24 X 28 of Patty in a little dress all made up with her hair blown back curled up on the floor - a very rare shot! So here is the deal: Anyone who wins a cd will also get a poster but that leaves about 30 posters to still be distributed. I don't know how many of you are out there or how many are interested but I'm guessing that the majority of you that want a poster will get one. As for the cds - Anyone interested send me an email with the following information: (if you enter for a cd you will automatically be entered for a poster) Name Address E-mail address A vote of someone you think deserves the cd (other than yourself) I'm doing this as fair as I can - I'm gonna write names on paper and pull a few out of a hat. I don't have time to be any more creative right now - sorry... 5 people will also be preselected to get these cds. The criteria: We will be reviewing an archive of posts from the past year - those who have made the most valuable posts or contributions or have seemed particularly nice or helpful will be chosen. And so it doesn't seem like I am picking favorites I have asked that everyone interested also votes a list member who they think should be pre-selected for a cd. I ask that I get all votes/addresses by Wednesday, June 21st so that I can get this all done before I move for the summer. I hope you are all as excited as I am about this - believe me, you do not want to miss out on this cd (or poster)!
