First up was Bristol , which with a population of circa half a million people would surely attract a big crowd - but sadly not as only around 50 people turned up. Lucy told us that she was seriously considering recording a new album soon and it'll most likely be just her voice accompanied by guitar and piano and I think mostly cover versions of other peoples songs - The audience went wild with this news , well ok I did and was the only person to applaud and for that was greeted with "Hey I know you !" The CD will be recorded in the summer for release , hopefully , later this year. The venue was a social club , attached to a church so Lucy was much impressed with the fact that us Brits can mix our religious beliefs and our drinking in one place , and even funnier was half way through her set there was a rumbling from the ceiling above us which turned out to be a dancing class and they sounded like a herd of elephants. Set List : 1. Amelia 2. Manhattan Moon 3. Mothers Day (New) 4. Ten Year Night 5. Somewhere Out There 6. Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) - Lucy advised that her introduction to this song , which she'd never heard previously , was from the movie Shrek and that she considered it as one of the most beautiful songs ever written. 7. Brooklyn Train 8. Broken Things 9. Don't Mind Me 10. Scorpion 11. End Of The Day 12. Let It Be (McCartney) 13. Sleep Well 14. My Fathers Son (Very New) - title not yet confirmed 15. Ring Of Fire 16. This Is Home 17. Written On The Back Of His Hand (Encore) Next night was South Petherton , a small (and I mean small) village in Somerset. Travelling towards this place was an interesting journey and we saw places called Clapton , Cheddar , and also saw a sign to Glastonbury which is the location for possibly the biggest music festival in the UK. We went to the local pub (well let's be honest the only pub) , for some food and having just sat down in walked Lucy with her friend , promoter Stuart for a pre show meal. We met fellow Lucy fan , Paul , from Oxford who we've met at many Lucy shows. The venue was lovely , it was an old stone built ex church , called The David Hall and tonight even though she was playing in a village in the middle of nowhere attracted a much larger audience than in Bristol the night before. Set List : 1. Bird On A Wire (Cohen) 2. Manhattan Moon 3. Mothers Day 4. Five In The Morning 5. Ten Year Night 6. Speaking With The Angel 7. Swimming Song 8. The Gift 9. Guinevere 10. Line In The Sand 11. Written On The Back Of His Hand 12. I've Just Seen A Face 13. Don't Mind Me 14. My Fathers Son 15. Promise Me 16. Return Of The Grievous Angel 17. The Red Thread 18. Today's The Day (Encore) The last night of the mini tour was in New Milton , which Dave wrote about the other day. By the way sorry that two Lucy List members in the same audience didn't get a chance to meet , but maybe next time. Now , with no offence to Dave if this is where you live , but we arrived at lunchtime on a Saturday and the place was deserted on a day when I might have expected to be their busiest day of the week , and joking apart you could almost imagine the tumbleweed rolling down the street. With a bit of a struggle we found the venue which from the outside looked pretty dire , but ... inside was great with a nice music room , good quality PA , and almost a full house. Now what Dave didn't tell you about his request to mark his and Kay's 10th anniversary of meeting up is that they both independently wrote to Lucy asking her to play TYN without the other party knowing ! - Sorry Dave Set list : 1. Over The Hills (Unaccompanied) - and wonderful ! 2. Manhattan Moon 3. Guilty As Sin 4. Mothers Day 5. Ten Year Night 6. Keep Your Distance (R Thompson) - First time she'd ever performed it , having heard it in the car on the way to the gig. 7. Hallelujah 8. Brooklyn Train 9. More Than This 10. Scorpion 11. Don't Mind Me 12. What's So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding 13. Sleep Well 14. My Fathers Son 15. Let It Be 16. If You Could See 17. Texas Blues 18. Ring Of Fire 19. This Is Home 20. Written On The Back Of His Hand (Encore) Three tremendous musical nights - Looking forward already to Lucy's return to the UK in October Donald Aberdeenshire , Scotand ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2009 07:21:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Gina Golde Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Mini Tour Of England May 2009 Thanks for the great reviews Donald. The song "Hallelujah" is one amazing song and has been covered by many musicians in the past few years. I don't know what happened to it for the years before that. It is surprising that Lucy did not know the song before "Shreck." Try doing a Wikipedia on "Hallelujah" and you will see only some of the people who have recorded that song. A bit off topic now... Lowen and Navarro have announced their final concert. Eric Lowen, who has ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) simply does not have the muscle strength to sing and I think talking is difficult now too. It is so heartbreaking to see a man who would sing his heart out being silenced. He loved his guitar, but this is so much more profound. You all can help by watching the videos on the site www.whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com . Click on video and then click on "augiesquest." There are two videos to watch. One is labeled "Learning to Fall" and one is "Eric Lowen." Just scroll to find them. Every time a video is watched, a dollar is donated to ALS research. You can watch as many times as you want and each time the video is viewed, a dollar is donated. I run it in the background with the sound off and click several times a day. I hope you will join me in a very easy way to help. There are many other causes on the site as well. John Ondrasik is a most wonderful man! I actually did get to meet him at L&N concert. History starts now. I was hoping that Lucy and Rick got a chance to see leonard when he was here in NY two weeks ago. I found Leonard Cohen's music after seeing a Hal Wilner product of I'm Your Man. Teddy Thompson, Kate and Anna MCgarrigle, Beth Orton, Nick Cave, Athony, Martha and Rufus Wainwright and the original Cohen back up singers played a night where they sang Cohen songs. They also did the same in Australia and then a Documentary " I'm Your Man" resulted. .... Though Cohen is most known for Hallelujah, he also wrote Suzanne, So Long Marianne, Sister of Mercy, That's no way to say goodbye, The Future, Democracy, 1000 kisses deep. Leonard has been covered by Joan Baez and Judy Collins.? How could i forget the infamous Chelsea Hotel #2 which is said to be about Janis Joplin ( said Cohen). Leonard Cohen a poet and songwriter's songwriter is known to throw more words away until he gets the ones he wants. Leonard's Famous Blue Raincoat has been covered by Jennifer Warnes in a classic version and ofcourse Richard Shindell has been known to sing it. Bird on the Wire and Hallelujah are perfect for Lucy to sing. and ofcourse Tower of Song is a folk classic.... it is said that Leonard Cohen is subject of Joni Mitchell's Rainy Night House.? It makes sense as Joni hit the Montreal coffee scene while Leonard was singing and reciting his poetry. Their paths clearly crossed and they are simiar in density and intensity. Leonard Cohen is an acquired taste like Joni Mitchell.. Leonard the poet, writes sensual, sexual, political and religious material. Leonard headed up Mount Baldy to study and ended up being a Buddhist monk and currently is a Buddhist and observant Jew. Leonard came down from Baldy and recently staged a massive world wide tour. Two rounds of festivals in Europe and a North American tour... the fist time in 17 years.... I am privledged to have seen 4 of the Leonard Cohen shows.... I never thought i would ever get the opporunity to see him live and took advantage of two Radio City shows and two shows in Boston. Leonard didnt disappoint. HIs voice is lower than it was and he is spry for a 74 year old man. He performs over 3 hours and sang all the songs you want to hear and more.... The NYC crowd was star studded and in Boston the theater was smaller and more intimate, NO large screens... it was pure LC who has a voice given to him by the angels..... Check out LC if you can or check out the Documentary....... And I guess Ill see you all in the Tower of Song.... sharon G ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2009 06:33:56 +0100 From: "Peter Cox" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Leonard Cohen ( NLC) Thanks Donald and Sharon G... This is taking me back! I grew up in a small, heavy industrial chemical town in the North West of England. (Widnes.) At the age of sixteen (early 70's) I was playing guitar, writing poetry and lyrics etc - and beginning to play local folk clubs. I've no idea how Leonard Cohen filtered through to me back then but I instantly fell in love with the depth, tone and lyric quality of his work - and his voice. Widnes could not have been further from the Chelsea Hotel (and I mean REALLY) but his music still found me. Sharon's post has brought back a vivid memory of me painstakingly working out the chord sequences and picking styles for Suzanne and That's No Way to Say Goodbye.... and then playing them to appreciative (if slightly tiddly!) audiences around the area. He was a great find whose work has undoubtedly stood the test of time. Hope to hear Lucy cover a Cohen live one day.
