Whilst a dispiriting 19 million viewers watched the conclusion of Simon Cowell's latest freakshow on ITV, a pleasingly large Forest Arts Centre audience took a gamble on an unfamiliar performer last night, as Lucy graced New Milton with a two set, 100 minute show. Judging by the final applause, the healthy turnover of CD sales, and Lucy's appreciation of the venue, the evening was an unqualified success. Ironically, given the Cowell-inspired slaughter of the song atop the Christmas singles chart, Lucy surprised with a piano-driven version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, as well as a couple of very new (at least one as yet untitled) songs of her own. She appeared to have enjoyed her journey to the venue through the New Forest, commenting that the wild ponies by the road made her feel like she was in Africa! Kay and I were blessed to have Ten Year Night dedicated to us on the occasion of the tenth (plus one day) anniversary of our first meeting at Lucy's 12 Bar Club gig back in 1999. Today, despite claiming not to speak a word of the language, she's off to Spain for two concerts! Here's hoping, as far as Forest Arts is concerned, it's hasta luego, Lucy.
