In another matter, the story goes that Rush Limbaugh began using "My City Was Gone," by the Pretenders to annoy noted liberal Chrissie Hynde, and she threatened to sue him over royalties, but they came to an understanding, because there was a common cause both supported -- animal rights. And then there is the famous case of Ronald Reagan using "Born in the USA" at a rally in NJ, which drew the ire of Bruce Springsteen. I recently had a conversation with someone who's father knew John McCain personally (went to war together and then met up years later at the Pentagon...). One of the things this man said about McCain was that he was loyal to his friends and he hated bullies. Using people's songs, without permission and even when asked to stop, seems like bullying to me. They did stop some of the use, when it was legally not in their favor. I am not an attorney and any lawyers out there please clarify, but I believe that it is legal to use any song at rallies and live events. However, they can not use them in anything recorded like an ad (other than 4 bars or something like that). Deb points out that this sort of problem goes way back. One would think that lessons would be learned, if courtesy mattered. On another note, McCabe's Guitar Shop, where Lucy usually plays in LA, had its 50th Anniversary show at UCLA. It was awesome. There were all sorts of cool surprise guests including Chrissie Hynde. - ----- Original Message ---- From: Deb Woodell To: lucy-list@smoe.org Sent: Monday, November 3, 2008 8:11:26 AM Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Songwriting and Politics Gina wrote: > When the GOP used "Independence Day" to usher > Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin to the > stage after the debate in St. Louis, Peters realized the > party was truly perverting the chorus of her composition to > suit their agenda and it was high time for Peters to make > her feelings known." > Independence Day," written by Peters, was a hit for > country singer Martina McBride in 1994. - -- It's not even an *original* appropriation, because Sean Hannity opens his show each day with that song.
