Matt's already put together a very good piece on the Bedford gig , and I'll aplogise in advance for any repitition , and Matt ... why didn't you let me know you were going to be there ? , we could have had a beer together. When the dates were announced I had to get my map out as I'd no idea where Bedford was , and to my horror discovered it was just about as far away from our front door as it could have possibly been (large amount of sarcasm here :). Bedford didn't strike me as the sort of place that sees a lot of travelling musician's and the venue The Ent Shed certainly didn't either , but as usual I was to be proved wrong and the venue has had an impressive list of past and future visitors. The Ent Shed describes itself fairly well , as it's a .....Shed , kinda like a Scout Hut , except it's soundproofed , has a great atmosphere , sounded great and was as hot as hell ... Like Matt we didn't think much of the support , unlike the next night in Sheffield but more of that later. As for the set list , I took notes and here it goes : 1. Broken Things 2. Amelia 3. Ten Year Night 4. End Of The Day 5. The Red Thread 6. Swimming Song 7. Manhattan Moon (a.k.a. Molly's Song) 8. Brooklyn Train , nicely segued with Johnny Cash's I Still Miss Someone 9. The Gift 10. Line In The Sand 11. The Thief 12. Ring Of Fire 13. When You Love Someone (New song , not yet finished - sounded great) 14. Land Of The Living 15. Just You Tonight 16. Don't Mind Me 17. My Name Joe 18. This Is Home 19. Today's The Day As Matt said most of the planned set list , if there ever is one , got chucked out the window and most of the above were as requested by the audience. In particular Lucy dedicated The Thief to Ayeesha (who's now about 7/8 yrs old) who was there with her Mum & Dad , and Lucy recalled the time during her last UK tour 5 years ago when a 3 yr old came to two shows and her favourite song was The Thief ! , which truly freaked Lucy out as she described it as one of her darkest songs. Not only that , in the land of coincidence , Liz and I were also at that show and witnessed the event in a golf club in West Houghton (Near Bolton , I think) , now 5 years older she still loves Lucy ! There were obviously a few Lucy die hards in the audience , but it was clear that most had never heard of her before , and were given a great insight into Lucy's talent. So on to the City Of Steel ... Sheffield We'd never been to Sheffield before and we quickly found the Memorial Hall , which is a smallish (around 200 seat) music room that is part of the greater City Hall. I have to say that the comparison between the two venues is immense , and that the Memorial Hall is well named it is absolutely stunning. The gig was well attended , with a much larger crowd than in Bedford Almost on the dot of 8 o'clock three young men joined the stage , Vocalist who played acoustic guitar and Harmonica , Bass Player singing Harmony and a drummer playing with just a snare and a hi hat - Turns out they were The Wallbirds and I have to say that out of all the support acts I've ever seen (and that's a lot ) these guys were the best by far. Check them out on www.myspace.com/thewallbirds The music was very original , kinda skiffle / Ryan Adams / Johnny Cash and I don't know what else - They did about 30 minutes and brought the house down - At the end of Lucy's set she complimented the band and asked them if she could join and did they need a lady singer , and said that one day these guys were going to be stars - and I completely agree. Back to Lucy Set List : 1. More Than This - Story about when Bryan Ferry called her up to sing on his cd 2. Amelia 3. Ten Year Night 4. Line In The sand 5. Texas Blues 6. I'm looking through You - coz this is the only venue that Lucy has played where the Beatles played , albeit they were in the main hall , but watch this space ! 7. Manhattan Moon 8. When You Love Someone 9. Brooklyn Trian / I Still Miss Someone 10. End Of The Day - written while in UK for a week and started off as a country song having seen a band called the Good Sons , and now in it's current form is a million miles from country 11. Ring Of Fire 12. I Walk The Line (two verses - all she could recall) , as sung back in 80's when she sang C&W around NYC Clubs 13. Over The Hills - My request , she told me not only was a song from the new cd almost guaranteed it being played if asked , and as we'd been at 2 of the shows ... 14. Guinevere 15. By Way Of Sorrow 16. Don't Mind me 17. Written On The Back Of His hand - for another fan Paul , who I've copied on this message as I'd like to invite him to join our group (unless he's a lurker !) , and he was at 3 of the 4 shows ! 18. Return Of The Grievous Angel - Absolutely the highlight of the set - Fantastic ! 19. This Is Home 20. Just You Tonight 21. Today's The day So lot's of different songs over the two nights - Anybody going to put anything up about the Bristol or London gigs ? It was clearly a big deal for Lucy to come over to the UK , and leave Molly behind , and it's thanks to a gentleman from Sheffield Richard (I Think) who kept calling her and eventually persuaded her to come back that we have to thank who chaperoned her around for the gigs. Oh well , only 5 and a half months until she comes back , and we've got tickets for 2 of the next four shows in December already , and one's in Scotland ! :) Lucy loved the venue Lucy loved the sound We all loved Lucy All the best , Donald ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V9 #50 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
