DrK was very much a part of what Lucy Does on and off the stage and we know he joined her whenever he could.... so in the Name of keeping passing the Pi, i wonder if there is a way to donate money in the name of DR K....the original one....and from what we hear...quite and original..... i would hope one of the universities where He taught has established such.... whatcha think sharon g The future's bright. There are new things we will love, It feels so right. Let's not make up or rise above. Yes we are more corrupted, But happy and productive, We'll both live in our worlds of civilized people. Though I've heard that my brand new church has a slightly higher steeple. Other's seem to wish to be counted in without stating specificity in preference, half the sky, charity, etc. I am saving the emails I receive from list in folder and screen names, if your count is different, fine. I was just wondering since you organized this before would you like to do it again? I am willing to assist you in anyway but as the responses are coming in to the "list"... what is the best process? Perhaps we can now say we have interest in doing something, the thoughts/feelings to date are leaning toward HTS and Lucy's Dad remembrance/honor, so let us begin coming together in a more formalized way perhaps? I am Candy from NYC, now residing in Providence, RI. Saying hello, here to help, another Lover of Lucy and her music. Count me in to contribute and assist if needed. Thanks, please folks make your wishes known. Count me in on a gift honoring Irving K. If you Google "Kaplansky AND scholarship" guess what--there's an Annie Kaplansky scholarship at York U in Toronto (Dr. K's birthplace) and a Kalmen Kaplansky scholarship at Carleton U in Ottawa. What a family! But I don't see anything yet about a fund to honor Irving Kaplansky. Somebody would have to do some research--maybe contact MSRI, U of Chicago, the American Mathematical Society, or a family member--but honoring Lucy's dad is the best idea yet. I was mostly trying to get a general feel before putting the time into this. It seems like it will work as I figured it would, and I definitely think that something in honor of her dad. I hadn't even thought of a scholarship, thanks Sharon! The amusing thing is that I'm in the middle of writing 3 grant proposals (2 for memorial funds) right now and it never crossed my mind. So let's go for it. I'll call around some today to see if there is any plan for a scholarship/grant in his name anywhere. If there isn't or if someone has another idea, we'll figure something else out even if it ends up being another donation to HTS. I'll touch base later this weekend to update on everything and then once things get rolling we can take this off list and into private email. If anyone finds something in the mean time please let me know! - -K _________________________________________________________________ Dave vs. Carl: The Insignificant Championship Series. You can listen if you have XM satellite radio. Or there may be an audio stream you can access for free at aol.com - -------- Excerpt from XM-15 Newsletter -------- Mark your calendars - The Village presents a live half hour XM Satellite Radio concert performance featuring Lucy Kaplansky on: Thursday Jan 25, 5 PM ET, 2 PM Pacific Monday Jan 29 5 AM ET, 2 AM Pacific Monday Jan 29, 11 PM ET, 8 PM Pacific and Wednesday Jan 31, 11 AM ET, 8 AM Pacific About Lucy Kaplansky Barely out of high school, Lucy Kaplansky took off for New York City. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers-Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others-where she fit right in. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was everyone's favorite singing partner, but most often she found herself singing as a duo with Shawn Colvin. People envisioned big things for them; in fact, The New York Times said it was "easy to predict stardom for her." She teamed with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form supergroup Cry Cry Cry, and a national tour of sold-out concerts by the trio served to introduce Lucy's luminous voice to a new expanse of eager listeners. Peas, Mary Sue Twohy XM15 The Village - -------- end of excerpt -------- Lucy recorded the program at XM in Washington the day after her Birchmere appearance last October. Btw, did anyone hear the recent Christine Lavin program on XM-15 in which Christine's guest was Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer and inventor of the microcomputer? Wozniak picked the playlist and it turns out he's a Lucy fan. The Lucy song he selected that day was "Land of the Living". Be well.
